Black Powder Tavern
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.
Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

First time at this restaurant and was very impressed with a Great menu and service. I strongly recommend
Very pleased, would return. Food and service was excellent.
Fantastic experience for my birthday dinner! Sean, our server, was awesome, as were the valet guys and even the host. Quick service, outstanding food, and reasonable prices. Even my five year old loved everything he ate. It’s rare to find a nicer place to eat that is so welcoming to kids. For a history junkie like me, this is my new #1 favorite place!
We love this restaurant! Always good food, service, and beer selection!
I Love this local place! It has amazing history, George Washington ate there! The food is wonderful, fresh inventive, as well as classics, and so yummy! It is family friendly, but not over run with screaming children, and they have kids menu of more than just chicken finger and mac & cheese. Great place for a special night or if you just feel like treating yourself!
Good beer selection
Great food choices
Very friendly staff
Army Navy game
Great food and great atmosphere! One of my favorite places to eat in the area!
The food and service was wonderful!!
Wonderful. Michael our server was very attentive. The menu is large and varied. The polenta fries were grease free and novel. We shared the short rib sandwich was juicy and tender. The hostess was gracious and welcoming.
Parking is horrible
Food was excellent
The specials were really special
The best deal is the three for
Will be back
Very nice, no frills menu ... perfect for a light dinner ... chicken pot pie was great ...
Great place, but ton of fruit flies in the back room. We had to move tables.
My family did Thanksgiving this year at Black Powder. The buffet was exceptional! Great selections, great service, warm ambiance.
We came for the Thanksgiving Buffet. It was by far the best way to have Thanksgiving dinner. The atmosphere was very cozy and warm and we felt like we were at dinner with family and friends instead of total strangers. The food was outstanding. Everything you can think of for a traditional Thanksgiving meal and then some. And the price was a bargain. The best part was that the staff made you feel welcome and not rushed; and they gave the impression that they serve this many people every day. The food was replenished constantly. The service was great. I would highly recommend!!
We went to the Black Powder Tavern for their Thanksgiving day buffet. The food was delicious and there were many options. Unfortunately, on their webiste they mentioned their mac and cheese would be part of the buffet, which would have been perfect for my very picky son. It wasn't offered. I didn't ask about it. The food was delicious. There was a nice beer/wine menu if that's your thing. The setup for the buffet was a little crowded, but it really is a small, cozy place and there wouldn't have been another way. Our server was wonderful. I can't wait to head back for lunch next time I'm visiting my mother.
Food was ehh. Service started out decent but fell apart for a Sunday evening.
Lunch with my office colleagues and a home office manager from Arizona. Great food, great atmosphere!
We had a reservation but had to wait 30-40 minutes and then ask to be seated. Unorganized but good food
Very disappointing evening.
Really nice tavern. Very clean, and well designed dining area around the bar. Definitely a great vibe. I will definitely go again, and I would highly recommend this place!
Always a great time...good food, great service...never disappointed.
Black Powder Tavern is our favorite dinner spot. My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner there last year in November and it was wonderful. Saturday was our first anniversary and we had an amazing time. Thank you!
Unique and creative comfort foods at a fair value!
I live in Chesterbrook so I go to the BPT frequently. The food is good, drinks are solid and service is friendly.
Rate my experience as 'OUTSTANDING-PLUS'!!!!! I was running late, gave BPT a call, hostess Barbara executed my request get my guest a birthday drink while she waited. Upon arrival, requested server Mike was more than attentive, taking my drink order, then our lunch orders with a complimentary birthday treat!
Jessica, the waitress, was very good! When I come again I’m going to asked to sit where she is serving.
First time visit, really enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and the servers were all pleasant.
Had a fantastic time. The food was delicious; my gluten free sandwich was excellent Our server, Sean, was great! He was very attentive.
Our first time at the Black Powder Tavern was so enjoyable! The ambiance was terrific for a cool, windy October afternoon and the food was delicious. The chicken pot pie and the grilled Reuben were the perfect choices for us. Getting together here for lunch gave us a truly relaxing time and place to talk with each other. I highly recommend the BPT for its fine service and outstanding food.
It was very busy, and service was slow. We had a reservation, but they seated us in the back room next to two large parties. It was very noisy, and my grandsons missed being able to check out their favorite football teams on the large screen TVs in the main room. It used to be much better for kids. Burgers were delicious, though. I got a gin and tonic. Tonic was completely flat. Why don’t bars just get Fever Tree tonic? So good! Anyway, if you’re a tavern, you ought to have good tonic! How hard can that be??
We really enjoyed the atmosphere of an old tavern. We would definitely come back again. The bartenders were terrific.
Famiky friendly restaurant with great food and good service. We will definitely be back soon.
At first we were turned away saying they had no seating. I walked outside and made a reservation through open table and was in within 15 minutes. The service was very slow and the food was just OK. The hostess needs to figure out what is going on. She literally told my family of 5 that she didn’t think we would be able to eat there. If only I could’ve captured the look on her face when I returned with the reservation minutes after being turned away. Thank you Open Table!
Food has changed. Not as good. Poor selection of drinks
Great spot for good tavern food. We were really happy with the overall experience! Will definitely be back!
Great menu, great service. Phenomenal service. Our waiter was very thorough with descriptions and checking in with us throughout the night.
Always good to have George take care of us when we grab a booth by the bar. We get there early every time for lunch so we can get that same spot.
