About Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.
Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

Black Powder Tavern Ratings and Reviews
was very disappointed, service and food was not good. Waiter completely forgot my order and told me --i must not have heard you, wel Sorry--by the time he came back to our table everyone else was finished eating, too late to re-order.!!--I would not come back.
Food was really pretty good. Not sure I liked the table we had (close to door and main walk through) but that's just a quibble, could have waited for a better table. Server very nice and courteous. Rest is like all the usual for this kind of place. Had to ask for water twice. I like a straw, wife doesn't but we didn't get the option unless we would have asked, again. Ordered the mussels, asked for bread with them and was told they came with fries but bread could be brought. Got the bread and the fries, and (surprise!) the fries were piled on top :-o. Not sure how much starch I could stand so I just took the fries off. Didn't come with a little cocktail fork but got tired of asking for things so just used my regular fork. small things but would have bumped the rating up without them.
I was very excited to try this restaurant ever since I moved to Philadelphia, as I heard a lot about it and how historic and charming it was. However, I was very disappointed when I went for brunch last Sunday. The food was very bad quality, old, and cold, and there was not enough selection. Everything tasted really bad, and the service was poor.
Unfortunately, I don't think I will be coming back.
We went to Black Powder Tavern as we were visiting the area with family. We attended the Sunday buffet. The food was horrible - the rolls were stale (literally too hard to cut open), seafood was of questionable quality to be serving on a buffet line, many foods/salad/fruit puréed for waffles seemed like the food was going bad. We were so disappointed to spend 100 dollars on that quality of food. I will never return and would not recommend this restaurant.
A very pleasant experience .Exceptional because out waiter ran into the parking lot to give me my forgotten take-away food and most of all, I later realized that I had lost a valued bangle during dinner. When I called later, to report that, the staff obviously got right on it and found my bangle. Unheard of; I just assumed it was gone forever. Outstanding!
This is a really great restaurant. The food was delicious. The atmosphere is great. Good for couples, groups, families. We had the poutine fries for an app. The perfect start to the meal. My husband had the grilled cheese and I had the autumn salad with salmon. Both were right on point.
The only place we had an issue was service. Our server was not very attentive and hard to find. But I'm still giving it 4 stars for service. He was still friendly and those who checked on us and brought our food were great. It seemed like they might have been short staffed. But everyone still had a smile on their face. We will definitely go back.
We have been long time patrons, sadly the food was sub par, calamari dry and tasteless
Quesadea too spicy soup good, server very nice but overworked, no way to handle so many tables. Happy hour drinks in bar area only, so no one at tables seemed to have a drink,we might go back, but not for awhile. Miss the old days
I had been to this place for lunch a number of times with no problems. However, my first visit for dinner was a complete nightmare. The kitchen must have been having problems, because it took 1 hour and 15 minutes before our dinner was finally served to us after ordering. The appetizer was misrepresented (i.e., 2 of the 3 primary ingredients stated on the menu were not included in the dish). I ordered a drink without ice and was charged $3.00 more than the cost of the drink. A supervisor visited the table before we left to advise that I received a 50% larger pour because I requested the drink neat. That did not appear to be the case (and, at any rate, I was not told the drink would be more expensive because I didn't want ice). I have read about "nefarious upcharges" in NYC, but had never experienced this personally in the suburbs of Philly. In addition, a grilled salmon dish I had ordered previously at lunch included a portion of salmon approximately one-half the size of the lunch portion. My personal experience at restaurants generally is that dinner portions tend to be at least equal to or larger than lunch portions. We received multiple apologies from our waiter and two different management types, but nobody offered to try to make it right with some sort of accommodation (except the offer of a free dessert, which we did not want but accepted reluctantly - - the waiter advised that a complimentary dessert was the extent of his authority). The restaurant was not full (i.e., there were open tables and no people waiting to be seated), so it was difficult to understand the magnitude of the delays and problems. People kept blaming things on a new manager. Aside from being very unprofessional, it assumes that patrons who are having a terrible dining experience would be fine with the explanation that you are incapable of running your restaurant because your key employees are both new and inept. Overall, a very disappointing experience. I will not be back again.
