We had a delicious dinner once again at this beautiful ocean front restaurant. We enjoyed the Caesar salad as a starter and then had their special fish entree which was an amazingly tasty halibut with a very light curry coconut(?) sauce which sounds strange but was incredible tasting. We savored every bite. The new chef who came in last fall has done an amazing turnaround of this restaurant that we have gone to off and on for 15 years most often disappointed. We’ve gone three times with the new chef and been blown away every time. It’s important that they have now added some “non gourmet” items to the menu because sometimes you want something like that. The crowds are picking up as well so the good word is spreading.

We have eaten at this restaurant off & on for over 40 years. Many changes in ownership, management, chefs & servers. The location & views are outstanding unless you are stuck with banquet seating facing the wall.
We made our reservation at the 5:30 opening time and arrived 5 minutes early. We were told we would have to wait so we sat in the bar near the hostess stand and ordered some drinks. After a 15min wait and 2 parties who came in after us had been seated, my wife asked "did you forget us"? We were taken into an empty restaurant to be seated at a banquet table which I refused, so we were taken to a window table by the kitchen entrance. Host & hostess who had previously ignored us were not very friendly or welcoming.
The clam chowder was excellent but our cheeseburgers were small with too soft buns for the price. Noisy location by kitchen but the service was very good.
The main draw for this restaurant is the view. The many different servers are always friendly and hard working in what can be a challenging environment (up & down food, poor management & what can a busy place).
Food was great, cheeseburger was ordered Medium and it came out medium well to almost well done. Still yummy but would have been all the better.
The waiter was great but didn’t mention that you had specials. We found out when the waiter at the adjacent table was announcing them to his guests.

Celebrated our 10 Anniversary at Black Point. Every thing was perfect. Brian selected an excellent bottle of See Bass wine to compliment our Pork shank and lamb chops.
The Black Point Grill is, of course, oceanfront, so the view is spectacular. Service was also friendly and prompt. Cocktails were nicely done and wine by the glass was decent quality. It's a shame that the food did not measure up to the service and ambiance. I had a kimchee burger, ordered medium. It was served closer to rare. The inside was cool and reddish pink. The pork belly on top was not sliced and spread out so you would get multiple tastes. It was just two chunks, similar in size and shape to butter patties, stacked on top of each other. Tasty when you found them, but not really an over-all enhancement for the burger. The fries looked good, but were not crispy at all. Over-all, a dish with great promise that turned out to be mediocre.
My wife had a special, spicy halibut. It was anything but spicy. It was properly cooked, but less than thrilling in taste.
Pricing for everything, including cocktails, glasses of wine, and food, was reasonable, considering the view that came with it.
The Black Point Grill could very well be a destination restaurant. But the kitchen needs to step up to match the promise of the view and the attentiveness of the service.
We have eaten at Black Point Grill many times over the years. It is one of the most attractive, romantic places to eat on the North Coast: beautiful Sea Ranch architecture, stunning windows and setting, well-maintained, and comfortably elegant. Expect a chef's dining room experience.
Since we have become Vegan, it is less appealing. The chef WILL prepare an off-menu Vegan plate, which has been tasty both times my wife has had it. But it has been low-protein: no beans or tofu or other primary protein food. I have "flexed" back to fish the past two visits, but I don't think I will do so again. (Also, I have a dairy allergy, and the chef has been able to prepare me excellent plates with no dairy. So, kudos for custom service!)
On this visit, we were greeted by a host who seemed a bit "lost." He seemed challenged by getting two (or three ?) dining groups seated, despite the fact that there were plenty of open tables, and both the group in front of us and ourselves had reservations. Our waitress started out a little "above us" in feeling, but actually warmed to us when we made special requests. So that was really nice. She was attentive at just the right level.
You can probably tell from the first paragraph that we are extremely fond of the restaurant, but given the change in our diet and the lack of Vegan options, I'm not sure we'll be back :-(
If you are at Sea Ranch stop by the Lodge and visit this Grill. It has had it's ups and downs over the years, but is now on an up with new chef.
The new chef is a keeper. Our meals were top notch and our waitress, just her 2nd or 3rd night on the job, was efficient, pleasant and competent. She told us her name, but it escapes me. She is from Point Arena. The service tends to be a bit slow at the lodge, but it has improved. The halibut special had an Asian flair and was outstanding. The winter salad also excellent. The crab aioli served with the steamed artichoke was my favorite. We spread what remained on our bread so as not to waste a morsel.One of the best meals we have enjoyed there.
Probably the best cioppino I ever ate! The servers were very friendly and helpful.
New chef Rebecca Stewart brings her flair for spices to The Sea Ranch Lodge's Black Pt. Grill.
She's the former owner of award-winning Spice Creek Cafe in Chico, and other notable restaurants in LA, Las Vegas, and Victoria, British Columbia. She and her husband Mark Diendorf (the new restaurant owner) are revolutionizing and revitalizing a restaurant that had become a bit staid over the years.
We had the seafood ciappino (chocked full of fresh, local seafood, tomatoes, and freshly ground spices + a toasted sourdough toast topped with just caught local crab), crusted fresh halibut (with fresh local ingredients and a very subtle and slightly spicy peanut flavored sauce with light, jasmine rice), and a yummy, hearty mushroom lasagna surrounded in a flavorful tomato sauce.
Highly recommend this place now, and can't wait to see what's coming to the menu as the winter wanes and spring begins!
We made a reservation for 11:15 on a Sunday expecting Brunch. However, when we arrived we were told breakfast was no longer being served. Two people in our party ordered Reuben sandwiches that came on cold toast rather than grilled and the cheese had not even melted and there was very little corned beef. In addition, the toast was half rye and half sourdough. In the past, the Lodge was famous for its Reuben served on marble rye with a generous amount of corned beef. Another in our party ordered the bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato on sourdough sandwich. It also came on half rye and half sourdough and several pieces of toast were burnt as were several pieces of the bacon. It was a very disappointing meal.
Dinner was great, but better still was breakfast the following morning when they let us bring our dog in.
We went to the Grill for our anniversary. The view at sunset was spectacular. The food was tasty, presented nicely and prepared to our order. The service was excellent. We plan to return for out next anniversary as well. It is worth the trip.
New chefs menu is unique but could be better. 40.00 chippino had too many muscles, no crab and wasn't spicy at all. Halibut was good but not sure curry was the way I would go. The creme bulee wasn't toasted on the top at all because the torch wasn't working. I get it winter is not their peak season but staff attire was super casual (one waitress was wearing a beanie) and just doesn't support their prices overall. Sometimes really good sometimes not.
We stayed at The Sea Ranch Lodge so we had dinner at the Black Point Grill, as it is the only restaurant for miles. The service was friendly and attentive, despite how busy they were. The food was very good and reasonably priced, although I did order lasagna and was surprised to find an unstructured bowl of pasta & sauce. It tasted great, however, so maybe this was a take on "deconstructed lasagna". All in all, it was a very nice dinner and we will look forward to returning the next time we stay at the lodge. The manager and server were both warm and attentive. The food was a disaster (who puts a garlic dressing with a blue cheese salad; and then the bacteria bomb, par-cooked, re -cooked chicken that was part as overcooked and dry as sawdust on one end and raw on the other). I was told there was a new chef and she was legit. No. Food was a mess. Make something simple and good before you are throwing grapes and prunes and overcooked mushy rice and a huge portion of poorly cooked, unsafe chicken into a bowl, and saying it’s a chefs food. Simplify your menu and make it good before you try make it great. Cook a chicken breast in a hot cast iron pan and throw it in the oven for 25 minutes and serve it with some potatoes and a lemon. I’d pay $30 for that done right, but I won’t stay at Sea Ranch Lodge again until they fix this mess of a restaurant.
Over the past 3 decades, we averaged 1-2 trips/year to Sea Ranch, always dining at least once at the Lodge. Quality has fluctuated markedly — unfortunately, it is low at the moment.
On arrival, we learned that there was live music in the lounge; we asked to be seated as far as possible from the noise. The waiter and maitre d' conferred and we were taken to the table closest to the lounge. The waiter later explained that all the other tables did not seat parties of four (not true). Off to a bad start.
The waiter disappeared for a few minutes, then announced special menu items. He then disappeared without providing menus/water. We caught his eye 5 minutes later and asked for menus — he provided them but forgot the wine list (it took another 5 minutes to receive that). Water and the wine list arrived eventually and we were able to order. The menu is more limited than previous years (I appreciate the difficulty of stocking a kitchen in this remote locale so I give them a pass on this). The appetizers arrived but the wine arrived well after we has eaten the appetizers. And getting bread required another request. The waiter also brought the wrong wine — I had ordered by the name of the vineyard. He replied "fume blanc". I said "no, chardonnay", which he acknowledged. Alas, the wrong bottle was opened (my bad for not reviewing the label).
Food was adequate but service was abysmal. The waiter explained: they are chronically short of staff, several waitstaff had not arrived, and the needs were increased by serving the people attending the live music. He said that the music was being discontinued because of staff shortage and that we should have been informed of the live music when we made the reservation.
Overall, a disappointing experience. My kids, now adults, have a fondness for the restaurant based on lots of good experiences in their younger years. But, my patience is worn thin.
We have come here frequently over the last 12 years, and it varies in experience; we think because there seems to be turnover in staff and chef. Last evening was one of our best experiences. Kudos!
We had an amazingly good dinner here Christmas evening. The new chef Rebecca is very skilled. The salad was great, the lasagne was very gourmet and not heavy and cheesy, the turkey entree was great, the pumpkin cheesecake was fabulous according to my husband and my dessert of a shortbread cookie and vanilla gelato was wonderful. Wow!!! You need to come try eating at the Lodge again 👏👏👏
The site is breathtaking, overlooking the Pacific across Mendocino meadow-lands. Its cuisine has not in the past been the draw, but that's all changed now.
Rebecca Stewart is a very talented chef with an impressive background that has gifted her with a very fine hand for invention as well as excellent skills in training her sous chef staff to recreate her dishes with perfection. A native of Victoria on Vancouver Island, she brings an Indian fusion to her presentations, but while rich and delicate, they aren't overly hot-spicy. She specializes in local growers and proving that healthy can still be delicious.
Mussels and clams came in a rich coconut milk/masala sauce. We were equally pleased by fried calamari of amazing tenderness and a wonderful Basic Burger. The grilled salmon melted in your mouth.
Becca's husband Brian Diendorf is working wonders with the wine list, which was a year ago rather dull. We ended with cappuccino and a dense but delicate chocolate torte suffused with raspberry which we washed down with a lovely 20-year-old Tawny Port.
Be warned: there are stairs! But well worth the drive.
I live in this area part time. Unfortunately there are not a lot of upscale restaurants in the area, so its hard to avoid taking friends and family here. The food has recently improved significantly and you can't beat the views. The thing that really takes away from the experience is the surly service. From the hostess on, generally the staff acts as if they are doing you a favor. Typically they are very understaffed, so service is slow or poor. You expect more from a place where spending $60 plus per person for dinner is easy to do. My guess is they figure the patrons are tourists and won't be back. so who cares? This assessment is based on at least 6 meals at least over the past year, so this isn't a one time experience.
Unfortunately, the food was average and the cost was high for what we were served. The restaurant used to be exceptional. Possibly they had a bad night?
On a positive note, the duck was excellent and the server was trying very hard.
Otherwise a very mediocre night. We went for a significant birthday celebration and I requested a specual table and desser but the harried
staff seemed to not even have a reservation record of any sort. Even a lousy table there has a good enough view and that was what we got. I did feel sorry for the staff but overall it was a disappointing dinner. Bland salad and veg option was school cafeteria fare.
Management needs to get a handle on this business. It's not inexpensive!

Great local food & outstanding waiter who shared his honest opinion of food & wine
We were celebrating our 45th Anniversary and had been told this was a nice place to come. We stunned that when we got there at our reservation time, we were told it would be at least 20 minutes later, offered a seat in the bar area where we sat for about 15 min, but no one came to see if wanted a drink. Finally we flagged someone down -- that server (Taryn) took it upon herself to seat us right then close to her section, even tho she was waiting on a large party in another room, and then proceeded to give us very good service, including free dessert. If not for Taryn, we would have gone away very very disappointed. The food was so, so - another surprise is that the menu offers so little fish for being right on the ocean. The thing is, there were about 10 empty tables in the dining room when we got seated - apparently not only were they experiencing a brand new bartender (on a Sat night) but did not have enough wait staff to handle their reservations. A very poor showing really. I would go to St Orres next time.
The meal started promisingly with a very good Ceasar salad and a special caprese both of which were fresh and well dressed . The pot roast was a major disappointment particularly at a restaurant highlighting the source of its beef. Tough and literally unable to cut without major effort. To the credit if the staff the largely inedible meat was taken off the bill. The salmon with curry sauce was average. The sauce was pleasantly aromatic and not overpowering but the salmon had a hard shell like exterior that was too hard and stiff to permit fork accessibility. Disappointed given the relatively expensive accommodations. Should add that breakfast was well above average although one would hope the cleanup crew would have completed the vacuuming prior to inviting guests to enjoy the start of the day.
This was a second visit to Black Point Grill within a five-day period. While the view is superb and the waitress helpful and friendly, the food fell short. The only option for a vegan meal was the side dressing for the halibut steak. Evidently during the week the vegetable plate is not available. My son's beef short ribs were dry and flavorless. We justified the price charged by the opportunity to watch the sunset and the fellowship.

The choices for a vegan are quite limited on the menu, yet the chef prepared an attractive and tasty vegetable plate. The reason for coming to Black Point Grill is always the beautiful view of the ocean at sunset. In addition, our waitress was bright, friendly, and helpful.
The view is a multi-million dollar view. I repeat what I just said. One can walk out, before or after dining a short 1/2 block distance (though there are no blocks around this neighborhood) to see seals, sea lions, whales spouting, a spectacular turquoise-water-color inlet. Everyone feels like they were one of the first ever to see this experience because there are so few people there, maybe 2 or 4 on the entire walk. The food. It is good, not spectacular or great, but good. The idea of watching the ocean and the people and the privacy of this area is worth the entire meal.
Food was amazing. Ivan, our server, made the evening. He made it a real celebration as if he were celebrating with his own family.
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary with friends. We were disappointed in the quality of the food. I think it has gone downhill since we were last there. They were out of some items listed on the menu by 7:00pm. Other items listed on their website were not available, an example was the lamb. I hope they improve the food and the menu, because it is a pleasant and convenient place to eat when staying at Sea Ranch.
Waiter forgot to tell us most of the specials. The food peppery and had no other flavor.
We stayed at their lodge, Sea Ranch Lodge. I wish this whole place was better. The dining room is beautiful, with ocean views. The food was unmemorable. The service was terrible. The staff was nice but they just kept making mistakes: our Caesar Salad didn't arrive until 30 minutes later with our entrees, by that time it wasn't crunchy. Cioppino wasn't served with a 'graveyard' dish and a spoon. When we asked for a spoon, it was given to me instead of my partner who asked her. This is the memory of my dinner there, unfortunately. I will not be returning.
This is a favorite family spot for special events while we are at Sea Ranch.
Brand new Chef (about Sept 1) has added some nice new things to the menu. Seems a bit of an asian touch in places.
We had terrible serving problems this Saturday night. We waited nearly an hour to get our entree! We believe it was due to them having a large private party in one of the dining rooms.
Certainly not the waitress's fault. Spoke the General Manager of the restaurant and he wouldn't take any blame. According to him: mostly due to new chef getting used to the kitchen and kitchen staff.
But: The sunset was lovely. Just could not keep drinking until the food arrived!!
The new chef, Rebecca, has performed a miracle. The food and atmosphere are much improved. The food was very fresh and creative. The staff's attitude was extremely positive. I hope this new trend continues.
