The only excuse my wife and I have for our several year absence from dining at the Black Olive is that we live in DC with many great local favorites and avoid the traffic on 295. But, newly liberated from the worst of the pandemic constraints, we longed for the very freshest fish and seafood and so, made the trek to Fells Point.
Traffic to/from was not bad and there is now far more parking available in the area.
Except for the nearly empty dining room early in the evening, our dinner experience exceeded even our heightened expectations. The attentive server was very friendly and professional. Appetizers of lamb meatballs and oysters were amazing as were our chunky, Black Olive salads. But the tasty freshness of the Red Snapper and the Dover Sole were quite special. We also enjoyed the rich, dry, Greek "Santorini" wine. Carrot cake and baklava finished off an outstanding meal.
Black Olive has earned its place back near the top of our dining list: we will be back, soon.

We had a delicious, relaxing dinner for our first visit to Black Olive. The menu is so extensive and to be a bit overwhelming but we made some wonderful choices. It was a terrific meal. Our only disappointment came when one of our guests who is not a sophisticated eater but was trying his best, asked for cocktail sauce for some oysters he had ordered. The waiter told him that they don't have cocktail sauce but he could bring him some hot sauce which he declined. The problem came when we clearly overheard our waiter and the bartender laughing about it and making fun of him --they were just behind a partial wall next to our table. Bad enough that they were rude, but to do it within earshot of the customer is just offensive.

Black Olive has always been one of our favorite special restaurants, especially for the fresh fish. One of the true sins is to overcook fish. The waiter should have taken less time with trying to impress us with his knowledge and more with paying attention to the service.
The appetizers were delicious, but we waited more than 45 minutes for our fish entrees. The waiter blamed this on a large party in another room and told us our food was on the warming table. This was obvious when we finally received it, because one of our party said her haddock was overcooked to the point of having a crust on it and did not finish it.
It may be a problem of understaffing because of starting full inside dining after COVID, but dinner starting at 6:45 should not take almost 3 hours. We will not return or recommend to our friends until the service is fixed.

A delightful evening on a quaint side street in Fells Point. The hostess showed us to our choice of a quieter table on the back deck (though plentiful outdoor seating out front allows for more social dining). As always, Black Olive offers a wide selection of fresh seafood and an extensive menu of appetizers to choose from (along with adult beverages of course). In our case, we started off with Prosecco, warm Sourdough Bread, the Melitzanasalata Eggplant spread and the grilled Jumbo Scallops. Yuummm!

I then asked our server for her suggestion for an entree - which turned out to be the best-tasting Mediterranean Sea Bass I've ever had, grilled & prepared to absolute perfection! What a wonderful treat! And the slow-cooked Moroccan Style Braised Lamb Shank! a huge bowl of stew, filled to the brim served over couscous - flavorful and also cooked to perfection, the tender meat fall-off-the-bone delicious.

Wine and Baklava followed as the perfect way to finish the evening. So after four-and-a-half happy hours we slowly made our way back to the (now) night sky of Fells Point.

Dear 9DHC, Thank you for your review. We greatly appreciate even negative reviews as they are a teaching moment. Your review, is however, a real treat for a staff that has been working hard during and after a pandemic to maintain a cuisine that has been passed down through oral culture. Your words make such respectful recognition of the effort that our entire team makes to give genuine love through the craft of food. We are so happy that you enjoyed your experience! Every time we go to the Black Olive, we find another reason to fall in love with this place. The food is delicious. Wine, beer, cocktails: they always have a list of classics with a twist and local offerings we haven’t tried. The service and hospitality are second to none. The owner, Dimitri, visits each table to inquire about your meal and to see if your martini was made the way you like it. It’s different than other spots in Fell’s Point in that it’s classy and cozy at the same time. You can share small plates with a group or enjoy a beautiful entree, from Moroccan lamb shank to a whole Bronzino. We went for our wedding anniversary this weekend and can’t wait to go back.

Black Olive has an excellent menu and the food is fantastic. Great combination of Greek, with all of the traditional item, and seafood with a modern touch. Drink menu is excellent as well. We were a group of 10 and ou server was ovewhelmed from the start and was probably not that experienced which resulted in some bad moments for service (4 appetizers never delivered, incorrect drink orders prepared and extremely slow service which resulted in 1 member having to leave before his meal was ready.) However, the manager/owner overwhelmed us with his apology and his actions to "make it right". Once we brought our disastissfaction with the service to his attention he made sure that he was checking in with us, ensuring the orders were correct and actually thank me for letting him know about the issue and even said he was going to make sure stay started lettingcusotmer know that some entrees took up to 45 minutes to prepare and that they should account for that. Overall an excellent experience at the end and I will be going back.

The wine selection was limited. They didn't have the Cab we ordered. The waitress had no training on wines and offered a white wine as a replacement. We ordered a Pinot Noir, which was overpriced (we both had a headache the next day). When we ordered the food, they only had one side available, a fennel apple salad. When asked if they had veggies, the chef said he wasn't making anything else. At that point, we paid for the hummus (which was delicious) and wine and left.

To whomever responded to my review, your bias is showing. Guessing you said I had an attitude because I'm a black woman. FYI, I never spoke to the server, my date did. Being he's a very kind, diplomatic attorney, he was never nasty. We don't believe in being nasty to servers. Your lack of curiosity and sides have no bearing on her service. Saying your wine gave us a headache is a fact and therefore not slander. Treat the next bad review with more respect. Read it and do better, not attack the person who didn't enjoy the experience.

Black Olive
Responded on May 27, 2021

Dear Miss M, Normally, we look at reviews that have things that we can improve and take them seriously. . It is slanderous to say that you got a headache from the Pinot noir that you had. We are a busy restaurant and the chef makes thoughtful sides every night. We offered other options but cannot grill vegetables on a grill that is full and is timing very complicated seafood and fish. Your nasty tone and inability to understand anything that a restaurant must face during a pandemic is shameful!

Food was generally good, however we have ordered grilled fish but they had only one side (cus cous). We have asked for an alternative, eg. Some veggies or other but they have refused it. Simple request, which they would be able to do it and they simply did not wanted to do.

Black Olive

Dear Anonymous, Thank you for your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed your fish. The chef makes a side every day. If a customer wants a substitution, we try our best to accommodate that request. Unfortunately our grill was full of dinner orders and was unable to without compromising the food from the grill of others to accommodate your special request of grilled vegetables. We did offer you a Greek salad or Romaine salad which you refused. "they simply did not wanted to do" is untrue and unkind!

This place has a great on-line introduction and explanation. It has a great menu on line. Little of it is true.
Service: The staff is young and very inexperienced. Enough said.
Wine List: We wonder if the owners don't actually drink alcohol? One of the 3 or 4 cocktails listed was a gin and tonic. I asked what gin they have, I was brought a drink and then shown a bottle I'd never seen before. Not good.
The menu is a little different from on line.
First the bread: They make their own "famous" sourdough which is grilled. We were served underbaked bread with pockets of gluey dough toward the center, not grilled.
We started with sardines wrapped in grape leaves and grilled. We've enjoyed this dish in Greece, Portugal and Italy and occasionally grill fresh sardines ourselves. These were inedible and I strongly suspect they were canned.
My husband ordered Octopus Salad, with "Pounded Octopus, grilled". Nope. It was a cut Octopus arm with tenticals, still good, but not the pricier Octopus steak that you pound and grill. He also ordered grilled scallops, served on an identical lettuce bed..these had been earlier pregrilled and warmed to plate.
I ordered a fresh fillet of halibut grilled. ALL fish dishes come with "Sweet Mashed Potatoes." aka mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. Weird. The asparagus had not been trimmed at the bottom, so you had to do your work cutting around the woody end.
Greatest disappointment was the tableside fish filleting. You can order a whole fish which they will fillet tableside. Not entirely true. They will cook a whole fish, then the manager will try to spoon the column and pin bones out tableside...a lengthy process for him. While doing that, your little plate of sweet mashed potato sits on a tray to the side.
We ordered a mixed berry sorbet. The sorbet was an icy granita, fairly tasteless. More like a chunky snowcone than a sorbet.
Would not recommend, it's much more media hype than skilled cooking!

Upon walking in, we were ignored by two wait staff… We waited a full five minutes before being acknowledged and taken to our seats. Our seats were far in the back, which is fine, I’m assuming due to Covid. We then had to wait for water… And I began timing how long we sat there before we work knowledged again. We were just about ready to leave, when someone brought us water and let us know someone will be back to take our order. Our food did come quickly… However a wait staff person never returned to refill our drinks… I had one glass of wine through an entire meal… Normally I can drink at least three glasses. Owner was very nice and the staff was great! Service was very good overall. Owner filet/deboned the fish in our presence after it was cooked. Nice touch.

Cabernet - thought it should have been room temperature and not cold. Chilled would have been fine, not cold. Good portions.

Grilled Octopus Salad - Excellent
Bread- keep it to dip in salad along with the olives

Bronzni - good flavor
Snapper - good flavor, olive oil and I believe lemon juice or vinaigrette drizzle had a great flavor but it should be heated up before pouring on the fish. It made the fish cold on top. A solid 3 stars.

Should consider adding blinds in back room to block the outside porch area in winter. Looks a bit disheveled.

I would return for dinner, but not necessarily for special occasions. To be fair, getting by in COVID is tough so I’ll give 3.5 stars.

Lobster Bisque - Good flavor, but it was not thick enough

Black Olive
Responded on May 29, 2021

Dear Anonomous, I just wanted to respond to your points: Cabernet: we choose to serve cabernet at 58-60F which is cellar temperature. The expectation of room temperature wine is looked down upon by sommeliers. We feel that Fish is not something that needs to be piping hot. as it cools down immediately after being cooked the flavor is the best. If you heat lemon juice and olive oil it will destroy the flavor of the sauce. thanks for your feedback but I think we will pass on cooking the sauce!
