The food was awesome. Great service and nice atmosphere. Will go again soon
My date and I enjoy the Black Olive but it is a bit pricey and Saturday night our server was not very professional. We like to order a couple appetizers and share a main course. One appetizer said “roasted red peppers and feta cheese”, so we expected sliced roasted peppers with chunks of feta. Instead we got a pile of goop, ground up peppers and cheese- it was tasty enough, but did not look appetizing at all and not what we expected. The savory bread pudding appetizer was unique and very good, as was the fish and shellfish stew we ordered for an entre. The server had to fumble through the wine list to find his suggested wine, and provided no help on the menu. Finally, I have a thing about being presented the bill before the table is cleared. Am I alone on this? If I were having dessert or coffee, they would clear the table first, right? Why do I not deserve that courtesy if I am not having dessert?
Anyway, we will go back to the Black Olive since we live in the neighborhood, but we will ask more menu questions, and more clearly guide our server.
Seated, no one appeared for 15 minutes. $18.00 for three scallops, we asked for a fourth as there were four of us. They charged us $6.00 extra. We ordered scallops, chicken, bread pudding, pie And two salads. Most everything was served with mixed greens out of a bag. The scallops, chicken and salad were good, not great. Everything else was mediocre. It was very disappointing. We had to ask a busser for one salad that we did not receive. Apparently our waiter was new, he had no support that we could see and his other tables were in another room. He forgot about us. They say a large loud party next to us and it was hard to hear each other. We won’t be back
Black Olive is a lovely restaurant. We sat at the bar, but the service was no less attentive. The hostess was efficient; Shoshanna at the bar was helpful, knowledgeable and kind. The food was amazing! Authentic and delicious. We had the Black Olive VIP seafood platter and an additional order of the stuffed calamari. Goodness worth the $.
With several new menu items, and the best service i've experienced there since the late 1990s, Dimitris Spiliadis has taken his family's fish taverna to new heights. There's no nonsense here – just simple, thoughtful, Hellenic food, wine, and hospitality
I haven’t had the pleasure of dinning at Black Olive for over 5 years because my travel to Baltimore is now infrequent. It didn’t seem that long after I sat down because the ambiance, service and food are just as good if not even better. Fresh whole fish is not largely available but at Black Olive it’s an everyday specialty always with multiple choices of fresh fish. Which you can choose yourself from their fish table. Two of us shared a large whole black bass which was cooked like branzino and perfectly. The appetizers were all tasty. I introduced business colleagues to the Black Olive and they top loved it.
Love this restaurant!!!
Had a wonderful evening. The experience was excellent!!
I remember going o Black Olive many years ago and it being a wonderful night out. Now the place is tired and feels like no effort is put into making it a special night. No pita bread for the Hummus appetizer platter. The fish in the case looked okay, Not exciting, and our company ordered the Tuna and it looked horrible.
Very subpar now. Time to close
It was great to come back to Baltimore and find the Black Olive still there. A nostalgic and reliable place to catch up with former colleagues/friends over plates of good food. The toasted bread was a real standout, btw.
Very nice menu and well prepared food. The fish was excellent. Our reservation was moved an hour later with less than 24 hours notice to accommodate another event. That was something that has never happened before.
The WORST dining experience in Baltimore. Poor service, disorganized management and kitchen. Had to ask for everything (including tableware) three or four times. This place used to be a gem. Now a complete waste of time and money.
Had the Stuffed calamari + sardines in grape leaves appetizers and the branzino, filleted tableside, all were served hot and were outstanding. Best seafood at a local Baltimore restaurant I've had this year. Great meal(!) + excellent service from Carl! Thank you!
Still a great place for a wonderful piece of fish and many other Greek additions to the menu. Put this one on your list.
We attended the Willamette Valley wine dinner. it was exceptional! Look out for their wine tastings and get the one you will not be disappointed!
Another great meal at one of our favorites for special occasions.
Love it!!! Never disappointed and everyone is so nice! Highly recommend!!!
Decent spot with good food. Reasonably priced. Service alittle slow. Ambience just not there. Not everything on the menu is a hit BUT the shrimp, branzino, and lamb were spot on.
Went for a birthday celebration. Food was excellent and service attentive. Prices are very high. It is not a place for regular dining but special occasions.
Neil was fantastic- as was the food and ambience!!
We enjoyed this restaurant experience very much. We both had fish. Mine was the best and freshest rockfish I have had in memory. My girlfriend's experience was equally spectacular. It was her birthday and we are both from Baltimore. We know the best seafood in the area, and this is where she wanted to go.
We were not disappointed. Fantastic as always!
Food was good as always but not as good as previous visits.
We had a waiter in training which meant fish was not filleted as professionally as we would expect.
Place was empty so ambiance affected.
Just back from Greece and wanted to extend the experience. I just say, Black Olive's stuffed calamari is so much better than what I had on Greece. No comparison!
Everything at Black Olive is top-notch. Food, service, ambience. Love this place!
I came here with my husband the day after our wedding to celebrate. The food was absolutely second to none! We loved the grilled octopus and stuffed calamari appetizers and the wine selection was expansive. Both of our main dishes were delicious as well. I had the sea bass and he got the surf and turf with scallops and everything was wonderful.
However - we were seated in the very back of the outdoor dining area and I’m pretty confident we were forgotten about. No one came to take our order for drinks or food for 30 mins and we didn’t have drinks in our hands until an hour after our reservations.
It was not very crowded at all so I’m not sure what that was about. The food could not have been better but the service was quite a bummer especially considering that it was a special evening that my husband and I were celebrating.
We had a wonderful time! Recommend the octopus and sardines wrapped in grape leaves for appetizers. The scorpion fish soup was just OK (not sure that it was scorpion fish it looked like rockfish). The grilled rockfish was fresh and good. We asked about after dinner drinks that we didn't recognize and they ended up giving us tasters first b/c they couldn't tell us much. Overall, fun time!
My wife and I came to Black Olive for a late lunch Thursday after my doctor’s appointment and were looking for a real pick-me-up. Black Olive did the trick! The prix fixe menu offered a nice variety of choices. We both had the whole grilled sea bass. It was crispy on the outside and moist and succulent on the inside. Our server Jenny graciously offered to bone our fish but we opted to do the work ourselves. I’ve had grilled sea bass in other parts of the world and this version was as good or better than any of them. The Assyrtiko wine from Santorini was a perfect complement to our meal. The seared scallops were cooked beautifully and the Greek salad was equally as fresh and appealing to the eye. We were happy to find that the quality and service at Black Olive remain at a very high level. Thank you for a lovely afternoon!
Delicious food and really wonderful service. We were having such a nice evening that we stayed for hours and they continued to take great care of us. The owner took time to talk to us and recommended a fantastic bottle of wine. The Greek coffee was also a perfect finish.
This is one of the best restaurants I have had the opportunity to dine at. As soon as I came through the door this gentleman came up with a big smile, shook my hand and talked to me as if he had been knowing me for years.
The staff was extremely pleasant, took their time answering my questions while making suggestions.
The food was out of this world delicious!!
I didn't want to leave and I think they knew it from my ever going conversation with the staff. Lol
It was a very delightful date night with my husband at a very wonderful restaurant. I can't wait to go back and I tell everyone about this gem in Fells Point.
As far as the whole dining package, excellent! This place has yet to disappoint.
Delicious. Great business dinner
This was our second trip to the BO and everything was very nice including honoring the notes from my open table request.
Had a wonderful lunch at Black Olive ordering from their prix fixe menu. Loved the four traditional spreads as the appetizer, the roasted vegetables and Pratt Library recipe crab cake were delicious, and the baklava was scrumptious with a wonderful crispness and no sogginess. Will definitely go back again!
The luncheon was excellent and a super value. Place and staff charming!
The food was delicious. The servings were scant. The service was dismal. It was near impossible to get a drink order, no one asked if we wanted to order wine for the table, a special request to plate the shellfish separate from the other fish on a seafood platter to accommodate a sever allergy was scoffed at and then ignored, water glasses went unfilled and good humor and service was nonexistent. I do not recommend this establishment. And, it's unfortunate because I had high hopes and had even called ahead to arrange a round table for our party of 7 and had explained we were coming to celebrate my mom's birthday.
Have been going to the Black Olive for years, when we can make it up from the WDC area. Always great food and service. The fish is exceptional and the lobster pasta was also excellent. Highly recommended.
Great food! Homemade and good presentation. Service was a bit slow and not attentive with clarification on water and what exactly the order was... so overall seemed overpriced for what it should be. If not the service, would come back here.
Excellent Fresh Fish.. and I mean Fresh. Service was attentive but not overbearing, but the fish..did I mention Fresh.. Would defiantely go back!!
Absolutely delicious. The freshest fish I’ve had in Baltimore! The grilled octopus appetizer is my all time favorite as well.
Simply love it! The food is absolutely delicious, ambiance incredible and service delightful. Black Olive nails it when it comes to consistency.
Sunday evening of Labor Day weekend was a pretty slow time, when my wife and I checked in to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The owner greeted us and seated us outside on the deck, at our request. Beautiful location, very quiet and romantic. Very reminiscent (except the cobblestone neighborhood) of Mediterranean dining experiences we had recently in the Galilee. The owner decided to be our server for the evening, and we chose to rely on his expertise to enjoy a sort of "tasting menu". (They don't officially offer one; instead, we asked him many questions, informed him of our tastes and interests, and ordered assorted mezze based on his advice and suggestions.) This Mediterranean style of dining, with seafood and freshly prepared fresh vegetable dishes, excellent olive oil, home-baked bread, etc. lends itself to a very pleasant, slow dining experience. We complemented it with wines the owner recommended (from Santorini, by the glass), and finished off with a couple of excellent desserts (Baklava ice ream and Tiramisu). Muscles, grilled scallops, eggplant salad (melitzanasalata), savory bread pudding, grilled sardines in grape leaves - all was excellent, and the bill was surprisingly reasonable. Next time we hope to try some more fish plates.
