Despite our friends poor experience here, we chose to give this restaurant a try. . Food quality was really good. However, after sending my dinner back for the third time, our experience went to the dogs. When you order medium well and receive a rare rib eye, and it gets sent back... you think that it will come out properly the second time. Nope. Two more times and it was still not completed as ordered. Worst of all, the rest of the table was on their final bites as I was in my first. Our server Noelle acknowledged that it was brought out incorrectly. However, after the third time, you would think that a manager or an owner would approach. Nope. No offer to give us dessert for the screw up. As well, it wasn’t taken off the check. That is the epitome of poor customer service. We dine out often. NEVER have I EVER had to send a meal back three times!! It’s not what happens- it’s what you do when it happens. Had they apologized and taken the meal off the bill, my review would be much different. Truly disappointed.
This was our first time at the BK. Noel was a wonderful server and helped explain the menu to us (which differed a little bit from what I’d looked up online ahead of time). This is a small, family owned business with a unique angle on what they offer. All of the remaining stew from lunch is made into a reduction/sauce for dinner. We ate dinner. Two of us had the stroganoff, one had the chicken Chesapeake, and the fourth person in our party had the Ribeye. Everyone went home happy with the delicious food. The wine list is good and the bartender accommodated a custom cocktail request. The restaurant itself is rather small and tables are squeezed in a bit tight, but we did not mind because we had such a wonderful time. Will be back!
Good restaurant but the tables are on top of each other. Went with my husband for our anniversary and felt like we couldn't even have a conversation because we were so close to the people next to us. Really annoying and unenjoyable.
Our first time here. The food was excellent. Our service from Noel was sweet and personable.I had the seafood pot and we split The crab salad special was amazing. To finish it off save room for the chocolate dome. Definitely in the top 5 best desserts I've ever tasted. Highly recommend this place. I enjoyed it so much can't wait to go again and try another pot.
Food was delicious! Really appreciated the server helping us understand the menu and specials.
Great place for a girls night out!
This is a very unique place. The food was excellent. Although previous diners mentioned their meals were prepared different than what they expected, our server spent time describing the options and how they were each prepared so there were no surprises. Our food choices (oysters on the half shell, caprese salad, salmon, scallops, Turkey &duck burger and steak) were to our liking and the service was spot on. We were there on a Friday night and they were very busy. We had to wait for our table even though we had reservations - but that is part of the charm of a small place. If you want standard fare with no wait on a busy night go elsewhere, but if you want creative meals in a fun environment this is the place.
Wonderful food and service. The only issue was they had us down for a party of 2 when my open table reservation specifically says 4. It was a very busy evening and we were on a tight schedule. They had a bit of juggling to do to accommodate us but it eventually worked out. I would definitely go back!
I had a monkfish special. It was truly superb. The chef is special.
Only real negatives: The menu was a little confusing and required clarification by the server. It was crowded and therefore service was a bit slow.
Interesting and creative offerings.
Interesting dishes. Good variety of gluten free options. Friendly, unpretentious service.
Excellent food, interesting, cozy decor and lots of ambiance. It's not inexpensive but was a wonderful night out with friends.
Kammy was our waitress and was wonderful - added to our delicious dinner!
Food was incredible. Service was
Menu looked terrific and hard to chose just one. Too many flavors on one plate. Cute place, nice decor, and atmosphere, staff wonderful. I was there for dinner. I think lunch might be a better option.
Adorable waitress, delicious appetizers and yummy entrees. Really cozy fall dinner! Thanks.
There was six of us in our group and they pushed together two rectangle tables and one round table which was kind of odd but we didn't let it influence our evening. Three of us had the crab cake special served with a lovely tomato, mozzarella, arugula salad. There was no old bay in the crab cake and I just can't get over missing it. Everyone gobbled their plates. One had the seafood pot and raved about it. One had the stroganoff and didn't find it creamy enough and the noodles were ravioli. A different take on stroganoff. Our sixth person got some salad with tuna. Again, a raving great dish. The fig flatbread was yummy. Great wine and cocktail selection. Will return for sure. The service was perfect plus ! That makes for a great night for me.
Cozy atmosphere. Eclectic decor. Amazing service. Unique cocktails and wonderful food!
It was our first time and we will definitely be back! Rob, our waiter, made our first dining experience truly memorable with his knowledge of the preparations and advice on ordering.
Such a special and unique meal. It's hard to describe the many layers of flavor, but each dish is an adventure in flavor, texture, and satisfaction. We are particular fans of the Chicken and Duck Pot and the Seafood pot - which makes it tough to try others given how good those are. Something to look forward to on our next visit.
This was our first visit to Black Kettle and based on their menu it will not be our last. While I do not have a fancy palate I can appreciate the chefs talent for bringing fresh ingredients together to create a dish that I would not otherwise have ordered. The whole dining experience was very pleasant and will certainly be a go-to destination.
We ordered drinks and relaxed initially. Our waiter checked on us a few times just to see if we needed anything and refreshed our water. We ordered the soup and sandwich combos. This was my 2nd trip to Black Kettle and both times I was amazed at their soup/broth selection. Both times the soup I ordered was delicious (chicken noodle and lobster bisque). Seriously, I wanted to lick the bowl! I ordered the chicken sandwich. The chicken was bursting with flavor, moist and tender. The bread was fresh, the arugula, sprouts and cucumber were also very fresh. And the chipotle aioli was the super winning touch. My friend had the seafood chowder and the BLT. She was just as impressed with her food as I was with mine. We had the Almond Raspberry cake for dessert and it was delicious (from Sugarbakers!). The restaurant has a mix of decorations that make you feel like you are in a winery. A decor that feels warm and cozy and special. Our service was great and we will definitely return!
We had a recommendation from a friend and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed and the friend’s reputation for recommendations has increased ten fold!
This was something truly original and different. The owner’s life story is fascinating - check website - but this is about food.
Our waitress, Kami from Kansas, was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and had great enthusiasm, but not overbearing. She has an interesting life story too.
We’ll definitely be back to try more items.
This restaurant was awesome! Had a girls night here, first time any of us had eaten here and all five us were pleased with our meals! The duck fat fries as an appetizer are amazing.
My wife and I have eaten at some of the top restaurants in New York and Rome, the Black Kettle is up there with all of them. (Without the insane cost!) The Chef/Owner Kevan has brought a GEM to Catonsville, Maryland. His food is excellent, it is creative and a tremendous value.
Food was delicious. Service was great. Small space with a good vibe. Will be back again.
Brought out of town guests for dinner. Our server was new and let us know right off the bat. She had a great sense of humor and made the evening super fun even through the foibles, which were minor. Stroganoff was the hit dish of the evening and the flan was large, creamy and delightful. Never have a bad meal here and highly recommend for date nights.
My wife and I loved "The Black Kettle"!
Not only was the food, ambience, and service incredible, but we got to meet the owner. She made sure everyone was taken care of and her knowledge of the ingredients in every dish was incredible! It's rare to see the owner show so much concern for the customers the way she did. We'll be going back on a regular basis!
We always feel at home at the Black Kettle
Well crafted cocktails
The soups were excellent - Gazpacho, Maryland Crab and Lobster Bisque. We also had the Tuna sandwich and the special of the day Melted Cheese Sandwich. The staff was friendly and efficient - I will definitely be back many more times - It is the best of te several fine restaurants in the Catonsvillle area.
The menu looked great. However our server did not tell us the specials that were not on the menu when we were given our menus or when we were ready to order. We overheard them mentioned and explained with great enthusiasm by another server at the table next to us. We could not get our servers attention, so we asked the other table’s server if he could get us one of the appetizers he mentioned that was not on the menu. We felt slighted by our server. So we ordered the gazpacho shrimp appetizer from the other server because it sounded right up our alley. However we were very disappointed because the shrimp was bland and did not have a good consistency and did not taste fresh. The average rating on food was for my entree and the appetizer. My husband got the beef stroganoff and said it was excellent. I got the Braised Angus pot and a glass of Zinfandel (just the right amount to accompany my entree). The entree was ok, but beef was not as tender as I expected for braised beef and one piece was actually very tough, but it had a good flavor. The menu did not state that that entree included very big round fat noodles. They are not my thing, but I wouldn’t downgrade the entree any further than average because of them. They were just a surprise, because the server did not mention they were contained in the entree when I asked her to explain it.
We would go back, hopefully get a different server and I would try a different entree.
Our table of two had the stroganoff and the shrimp and grits. Both meals were off the charts delicious. The stroganoff, especially, had so many flavors (beef, sauce, mushrooms) that our taste buds were doing the happy dance! The beef was cooked to perfection and practically melted in the mouth it was so tender. Even though the portions were plenty and we were quite satisfied, we indulged in the chocolate dome for dessert--a hard chocolate shell filled with half white chocolate ice cream; half chocolate mousse (?), with warm raspberry sauce poured on top. Whoa! It was decadently scrumptious. They are a tad on the pricey side, but when the quality of the food is taken into consideration, it's a decent value. The restaurant interior is classy, and together with the food quality, Black Kettle lends itself to a special occasion destination. We shall return!
The quality of the ingredients is exceptional and is immediately noticed with your first bite. In addition, the presentation of the dishes is beautiful. Our waitress, Kammi, was a true delight.
This was our second time visiting and the experience was as wonderful as the first time. I would highly recommend this restaurant for its food quality and ambiance.
Lovely ambience and spectacular food! Especially a treat for those with celiac disease, as almost everything on the very creative, locally sourced menu can be prepared gluten free.
I recommend Black Kettle all the time. My husband and I come here often because of the great staff, ambiance and the food. We are addicted to their beef stroganoff.
Great food, great service. Small dining area, definitely recommend making reservations
I liked the atmosphere, and the food was a little more interesting in its presentation than other restaurants. The soups were outstanding!
Lovely, leisurely evening @ Black Kettle...we opted for 4 appetizers instead of entrees...all were very flavorful & unique...shared a fantastic chocolate creation for dessert...our server was 1000% adorable...she allowed us to enjoy a fabulous & leisurely evening, catching up & didn't hurry us out...LOVE this place...food, service, setting...all 5 ☆☆☆☆☆
First time eating here. Loved the angus burger. Service was excellent. Thank you for the excellent service.
