About Black Cat
Black Cat, opened in 2006 and founded by Chef Eric Skokan and his wife, Jill, serves inspired farm to table cuisine based on the just-picked produce from its own, full-scale 130 acre certified Organic farm. By day, Skokan cares for the vegetables out in his fields. Each evening finds him in the kitchen crafting dishes on his daily changing menu.
Daily pairing menus give our sommeliers ample opportunity to dip into the 400+ selection cellar. The restaurant's wine list places the great wines of the world side-by-side with small, off-the-beaten-path producers from lesser-known regions.
Hand-crafted, seasonal cocktails featuring artisanal spirits & local ingredients show the talent of our professional mixologists who make our bar spring to life.
The Black Cat has a lively, warm atmosphere in its intimate dining room. It is located in the heart of Boulder, CO, just off the historic Pearl Street Mall.

Black Cat Ratings and Reviews
Our meal at Black Cat was such a special experience! We requested a vegan chef's tasting menu and the execution was seamless. Such care put into making each dish special and highlighting superbly fresh ingredients. Definitely a meal I will remember for a long, long time.
Black Cat was the perfect anniversary night! I would recommend the chef’s tasting and wine pairing for any special occasion OR if you are looking for palate heaven! Don’t worry about leaving hungry! Even my meat/potatoes/beer husband enjoyed the different courses (raw, grain, veggie) with wine pairings ... which truly enhanced flavor of food! They took good care of us and we enjoyed learning g about the different wines they were offering as the pairings! Reserve away- you will not be sorry!
I had not been to this restaurant for a long time. The quality has slipped a few years ago, but it has gotten some recognition recently and I decided to try it. The quality has come back somewhat, but the competition in Boulder is tough. There are many places that are more creative - especially if you factor in price.
3rd or 4th time at the Black Cat and exceptional once again. Attentive service, interesting and inventive cocktails with great food and wine - I will be back again for another special occasion. The Chef's tasting is always a treat and the premium wine choice doubled the pleasure with interesting and fantastic wine. Pricey, but worth it.
The service was wonderful from the moment I stepped through the door. I dined early in the evening and by myself, and was given an excellent table in a cozy banquette with a view of the open kitchen. The wine list is extensive, the food menu both complex and accessible. I chose the Chef’s tasting menu and found each course (at least six or seven) to be delicious, with multiple layers of flavors and textures. Each course was modest in quantity, but by the end of the evening I was very full. I appreciate the simple decor of the dining area, which maximizes privacy even in the small area. The music was well modulated (I can still hear “Take Five’ as I sipped my wine) and the classically elegant table settings help to highlight the food and service, not an interior decorator.
The restaurant came highly recommended. We had the tasting menu and the staff was hard pressed to deliver the food in a timely manner. It took 2.5 hours to complete the service. Other patrons who ordered dinners were served in a timely manner.
The selection of gin were limited to brands (2) we had never heard of or tasted but it turned out all right.
The desert (apple strudel) in my opinion needed to be baked. It was hard to chew and pasty.
The staff tried to ease the situation by comping the meal, which, we appreciated.
My wife and I drove from Denver to Boulder for dinner, and we greatly enjoyed our dinner at The Black Cat restaurant! We ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu which features at least six different servings, with each one enough of a serving to taste and savor and enjoy, with excellent presentation values, such as the Foie Gras with the phyllo crisp and poached pear and roasted almonds, if memory serves. I am a fish aficionado, and I greatly enjoyed the Colorado bass plate. Since I was driving I could not partake of the wine pairings, but my wife had the "Classic wine pairings," as the menu states, and she very much appreciated the six or so wine pairings with the variety of plates, commencing with the sparkling wine. We especially appreciated that The Black Cat served a Colorado wine blend (in I think the Bordeaux style), and I wish more Colorado restaurants would serve Colorado wine; why they do not is beyond me. It was an excellent Colorado wine blend (I have forgotten the name) that paired beautifully with the beef tenderloin plate. The sauterne early in the wine pairing was great also. We will return to The Black Cat in short order. Kudos also for their farm-to-table practice, growing much of what they serve on their own farm fairly close to Boulder.
It's always a treat to go to the Black Cat. My husband and I have made it an anniversary tradition where we get the tasting menu & wine pairings. This time we were seated at the chef's table which was really delightful! The amount of care and work that goes into growing the food, then preparing is evident in each delicious bite.
The tasting menu was superb and unusual; while the plates were small, I felt absolutely stuffed when we left! The service was excellent, and they did a great job of making our birthday dinner celebration a special event. I loved the variety of courses and the fact that much of it was from their farm - even the pork dishes! The gnocchi with wild mushrooms was especially delicious, and the steak was cooked perfectly and exceptionally tender. I highly recommend the Black Cat for any special occasion.
Great bar tender Chelsea that perfect level of attentive and helpful in a balanced genuine way. First table we were sat at wasn’t a good fit and before we could say anything our server noticed and responded by offering a change. This level of excellent food and great atmosphere was a rare treat. I’ll go back time and again. They excel at the farm to table concept and their flexibility with menu ingredients was impressive.
