The food was fantastic. I had the BLT and was pleasantly surprised with the flavor. The fries are seasoned just right. I am from Fredericksburg and met a friend there for lunch.. It was well worth the drive. Will be back.. heard the pizza's are awesome too.
I am a regular at Black Bear, and always enjoy a great meal there. The Black Bear restaurant is on the first floor, with the Brick Oven Pizza in the basement. Originally started as separate restaurants and separate menus, they wisely combined the menus and allowed you to sit in either restaurant and order food from the other.
ALL the food is great from both, and there are a variety of vegetarian and carnivore options available. The staff is friendly and provide great service, and when there is good weather, the back deck is available for outdoor dining. Unfortunately, they also allow smoking on the back deck, which usually drives me inside rather than put up with the smoking.
1. Eliminate smoking from ALL eating venues, including the back deck.
2. Up the quality of your Tequila. A few affordable anejo's would be great to see, such as Casamigos, etc.
Overall, a place I frequent a lot, and will continue to do so.
Server was polite but very distracted. We would ask him for something and 4 minute later see him sitting at the bar talking to friends or cleaning tables, and they weren't busy. They also seem to be running out of everything. 3 of us were unable to order something we wanted because they were out. I was the only person out of our group to eat all my food. I ordered the fish sandwich and it was so-so.
There is a floor on street level, but other levels they don't have wheelchair access that I could see.. Food was excellent, however they ran out of one of entrée, but did ask my friend if they could substitute something similar. Unfortunately the wait staff told my friend what the veggie selection was and it came with the one thing she didn't want - potatoes. She wasn't informed of the limited selection of vegetables and they had no other veg for her to select from. When she asked they did give her more salad, they did, but really only potatoes for your vegetables selection.
Came back for a second time. Happy hour changed to $1 off appetizers and drinks. It's Tuesday and noticed it was 50 cent wing night. I chose the Chesapeake which were absolutely flavorful. Love their pizza but chose the fish tacos instead which were good but only 2 small tortillas. Upgraded side to a soup or salad instead of fries or coleslaw. The Tijuana Smoked Chicken Soup was excellent and I'd order again. It came with avocado in the soup and had a nice little kick. Server was good and attentive and very personable.
The first time we went was on one of our date nights and it was really great! The food was fantastic - I had the seafood wrap and I can't remember the name of what my husband had but it had grits with pulled chicken and an egg. He said it was the best grits he had ever had - EVER!
Downtown restaurant with charm. Happy hour from 3-6. Enjoyed some of their appetizers. The smoked fried Haberno Bacon Wings were good but HOT! Also enjoyed fried oysters. The dill fried pickles were good but outer coating easily fell off ( good but had better). Last they have great selection of brick oven pizzas! The place has bar, outdoor seating, and more formal dining room and have to say, people kept coming in , which is a sign of good place with good food! I'd come back again!
As soon as we walked in, the waiter seem uninterested in helping us . We orderered nachos as appetizers. They tasted horrible. For $11, I would expect more than just tortilla chips with cheese whiz. Ordered a hamburger medium - medium rare... when i received it, it was well done. Thought we would have better luck with the Philly pizza. They mentioned they ran out of mushrooms, so there would be mushrooms on it (this was at 2:45 in the afternoon). The dough was thick and pizza was bland. Our waiter didn't check back with us until we were done with our meal if we needed refills. This is second time that we've been there, and definitely my last as we were very disappointed. Napkin was dirty as well as the plate.The first time we went, we just had the stone brick pizzas and they were awesome. The service and food was outstanding. That was the reason for returning, but unfortunate my last. Definitely not worth spending $50 for lunch.
Really pretty poor. Tasteless food delivered and had to ask fir Pico to go with the quesadillas that were delivered without cheese. The fish dinner was delivered with fries and not the sides requested and the waitress Nikki didn't know if the restaurant had any tarter sauce. Extremely slow confused service that the Black Bear needs to quickly fix.
Wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was casual. Decor is really nice. Exactly what you hope for in a nice restaurant. Prices were very reasonable for the serving size. They have an in house brick oven. Order something from the oven. You will be very pleased. Menu changes often and food is scratch made so everything may not be available all of the time. Great choice for business and family dining. We will return often.
The wait staff was awful. The table next to us had problems with their server as we had w/ours. Ours never came/checked on us as he was on his phone. The other server got everything wrong & was slow. Even after couple complained to the manager, service didn't get better. The greeter was clueless not knowing we made reservations (until someone else on staff showed her what to do on the screen), and nothing was said as I made a special notation as the occasion why we were there (anniversary). Our server got the order wrong, & my boyfriends steak was cold in the center asking for medium rare. The tap beer was good as was the firecracker shrimp appetizer. The NY strip steak was all fat/grizzle and tendons. Prime rib was better. When server was told about the steak being cold, he made an adjustment to the check which was nice. However, so many other things wrong and many other places to check out, we wont be going back.
My husband and I took our mothers for an early Mother's Day meal to beat the Sunday crowds and my mother had read about this place in the local Warrenton paper. The space upstairs where we ate felt a little claustrophobic, the batter for their fried foods was extremely salty, the grits for their shrimp and grits entree was one big lumpy mound -- not smooth and creamy at all, and several of the items we wanted on the menu were not available. Smartest thing we did was RSVP as there was a 90 minute wait. The location is quaint, right in the heart of Old Town, but it's a good drive from Fairfax and D.C. Overall, it was OK -- I enjoyed the company more and it was nice to spend time with our mothers. If I decide to go again, I'll try their wood oven pizza.
Stopped in for a quick dinner. Love the pub style ambiance! They have an extensive menu. Everything from brick oven pizza to Irish cottage pie (Sheppard pies). They also have Hot dogs which were particularly good. Never thought I'd say that about a hot dog but they were great! We would definitely return!
My recent experience with Black Bear was average at best. I made reservations in advance along with a special request to have dessert items prepared for my staff as they celebrated "Admin Professional Day." We were later served "regular" dessert options from the menu.... I guess they failed to read my request.
We were greeted upon our arrival with staff that were confused an unclear about our reservation and had no knowledge of the special request until I asked them to review the reservation. I expected better reception upon arrival and also expected to be greeted by knowledgeable staff.
Based upon my recent experience, 1, I would not go back to visit the Black Bear and secondly, I will not use open-table again as there appears to be some disconnect between the consumer and the place of business.
Finally, my Buttermilk Chicken was dry and burned. It was not worth my time to complain with management as service to that point had been sub-par.

Our family has enjoyed Black Bear in the past, partly due to the vegetarian options which suits one of our sons. This is the reason family traveled from 3 different directions to meet on Easter Sunday. It was not crowded at all, but the experience was the first time we were not all pleased. Of our 6, 2 ordered pizzas which came way before the other 4 orders. I was the only one who ordered a special, which was a "BLT" using pork belly and adding a fried egg. The sandwich was pretty much impossible to eat with folk and knife, all of the ingredients just didn't work for a sandwich to be eaten with hands. The home fries were under done and cold when they arrived, the fruit was a piece of cantaloupe.
The bloody marys were good however and I am sure we will try again and hope the overall experience is more like we have experienced in the past.
We have been here many times and this year scheduled our family Easter brunch. Food was delicious as always. The creative dishes like the Turkey Benedict with a chipotle hollandaise sauce were outstanding. Only down side was the brick oven does not start operating until 11am so if you are wanting some of the brick-oven favorites, schedule a later arrival time.
This was our 3rd time at Black Bear Bistro, but first for brunch. 2 of us had the BBQ rib omelette and one had a calzone. The food was good, but not special. Portions were a bit small by US standards. Service was great and the location in old Warrenton is excellent.
This was our first time at Black Bear and we were certainly not disappointed. From the timely service to the selections that appealed to our family group ranging from a young boy to grandparents, it was all good. Lots of interesting choices, such as the duck tacos (yum) with good-sized portions and reasonable prices. A winner.
The was great and our server was excellent. This is an historic place in Warrenton that I remember well. I was born in Warrenton and have always lived in the general area. I would recommend it for a casual dining with a lot of class. Its menu is upscale, yet also offers burgers and fries. The pizza kitchen downstairs is equally as unique, but a lot more casual. The pizza is excellent as well and is just a bit different from any other.
Food was good, service not so much. It was a Saturday evening, but they didn't appear to be that busy. We were seated immediately since we had a reservation for a party of 8. The service went downhill from there. We waited approximately 10 minutes just for water, then had to wait again to order. Once we ordered our dishes came out at random times for each individual to the point that we couldn't all eat together, and one of the orders (kids pizza of all things) came out well after the first person received their meal and was finished. Overall it was a lackluster experience, but I am giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt since I am moving to the area and plan on trying it again.
A mistake was made with my dinner and the waitress was on it immediately. Pizza was great. We ate in the basement which was very hot. I had made reservations and didn't think to say upstairs was where I wanted to sit. Overall very nice, you could carry on a conversation. Food was very good
We were passing thru Warrenton for one night and the hotel recommended the Black Bear, a small, unpretentious bar/restaurant on Main St (easy to get to and park, after 6pm). Food was fresh, well prepared, w/ many local ingredients, even a choice of local wines. Oysters were a good size, juicy, lightly fried - delicious. Extremely flavorful, the chorizo plate Included several plump sausages, carrots and potatoes, in light gravy. Also tried a cup of chorizo/chicken chili - delicious, a cup is enough if not your meal. Bistro has wood-fired pizza and sandwiches, lots of choices. Oven and bar room downstairs, probably a bit cozier than the cooler room upstairs (where we sat). Definitely recommend the Black Bear for the surprisingly high quality of food for a small bistro.
Did not live up to previous visits. Hostess seemed unorganized. Waitress seemed distracted. Pizza was not as good as I remember -- crust in particular was nothing spectacular. Not sure how long ago but seems the chef from The Brick sold to the Black Bear. Maybe that is why it wasn't quite as good.
