Black Bear Bistro
This was the first time the three of us had been to the Black Bear Bistro. All of us were impressed with the food and service. The macaroni and shrimp appetizer was great and loved the burgers. Definitely look forward to going back.
I requested a quiet private space and instead was sat next to a very active and loud child. We were served water with no ice, no lemon, no straws after waiting for 20 min at our table. We frequent the bistro often and typically have had a pleasant experience. This was beyond sub par. A disinterested server, unnecessary wait time at our table. When I asked for a lemon a third time I was brought a lemon on a napkin.
I am indifferent on the referral. The food is great, the ambiance is decent, except it gets too loud. We asked to be seated downstairs because in past times we were here it was always a little more romantic, but there was a very loud family in the room with kids screaming and our table was basically in the doorway and my husbands chair kept getting kicked by one of the waiters. The service was absolute crap. Very slow and forgetful...it was a bit disappointing.
We’ve been to BBB several times and the food has always been phenomenal. However our most recent visit was absolutely terrible due to the awful service. Our appetizer was brought out AFTER our entrees, and our entrees were brought out one at a time, about 10 minutes apart from each other (there were three of us). Each time we tried to get our server’s attention she would make excuses “sorry, they’re coming from two different kitchens” and then rush away before we could respond. We ordered refills and never received them, even though they still charged me for 2 beers when I only actually received one. Her response - “sorry the bartender usually brings it out for me” ... well what about the other non alcoholic drinks?? She just rushed off again and we finally had to find her to get the check so we could just leave. The food we ordered was great as always but they really need to hire better trained staff.
Been there many times. Always a great time. Beer and wine selection is limited.
Great food, neat building, good staff. Worth a return trip.
Food was good. Basement seating is dark with no windows. Employees don’t seem very happy.
So good. The shrimp po’boy was amazing! The cellar is very cozy and quiet; the upstairs is more lively.
First, the great-sounding menu online through TripAdvisor that got us here was not the menu in the restaurant. Upstairs on the main floor was too noisy with loud music playing. The grilled Caesar salad sounded interesting, but wasn't well executed. There was too much water on the plate from the lettuce wilting, very little Caesar dressing, and the shaved parmesan cheese was in thick slices rather than thinly shaved. A very disappointing watery salad. The formaggio pizza was a better choice.
Portions were tiny, quality was awful. Room was too dark, noise from the bar was too loud.
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent setting!!!!!! This place is 10 out of 10!!!
Great atmosphere and awesome pizza! Will def be returning again
We were seated quickly, but after 15 minutes, no one had visited our table to bring water, offer drinks, or even just to say they were running behind. After 25 minutes, the couple at the table behind us, who were already seated when we arrived, got up and left. A waitress had been to their table, but still no drinks, no order. After 30 minutes with no visit from a waitress, we got up and left.
Great food and atmosphere- staff is always friendly and professional!! I have never had a bad experience over the 2 years I have eaten there. Slightly overpriced for some of the entrees but they offer so many delicious and affordable meals.
Great addition to the Algonquin restaurant scene!!
We go here for dinner frequently. Love everything about this place. Food is great, ambience is charming, good beer choices.
I was a little disappointed this time at Black Bear. We have eaten there a few times over the years and always excellent food and service. When I made the reservation on Open Table it asks if you are there for any special occasion and I said it was for my husband's 50th birthday. We had 6 people and asked if there was any special dessert or anything they could do for his birthday. I never heard back and even with all the presents sitting there at our table, there was no acknowledgement at all. Maybe our server was new as she seemed a little nervous. It was not bad service, somewhat slower, but there were 2 large parties that evening downstairs as well, so we understood and expected food to come out slower. It just would have been nice if someone would have taken care of the request or even just said happy birthday as it was obvious. We will be back, but thought you shouldn't ask on the reservation if you are celebrating something if you do not do anything with it.
This was our 3rd time here and our first time coming for dinner. We ordered an appetizer and it came with our meal bot before hand. The 1st 2 times were great. We came back the 2nd time because the artichoke dip was amazing. And it wasnt on the menu last night . That's the only reason my husband and I came back for the 2nd and 3rd time. So we wont be coming back. :(
Tried the Cauliflower and Goat Cheese soup. Excellent! Definitely plan to get a bowl instead of a cup next time.
I'll begin by stating the only positive … drinks at the cellar bar were great, as was our bartender! We went for lunch on Saturday around noon, and the restaurant was completely out of pizza dough!!! (I am not kidding!), so we couldn't order anything with dough. Our waitress Jordan was completely non-friendly and rude and barely paid any attention to us. And when she was, she was snapping at us or being inappropriately sarcastic. I don't understand why people get into the service industry and then act as if customers are intolerable. I believe I would have been treated friendlier at a public hanging. Ah no, The Bear will not be getting my business again. I think I'll go somewhere where people treat me as if they want me to spend my money there.
it was fine. nothing special - wine list very limited
Just need to add vanilla ice cream to go with the delicious chocolate chip bread pudding! (And for kiddies)
Our food and service were great. We ate outside on the patio and it was quiet and pleasant. The ambiance inside resembled eating in a bar so it wasn’t what we expected or were looking for.
Great restaurant! Wide variety of choices on the menu. Excellent service. Mother-in-law loved it which made for a perfect Mother’s Day.
Dined at the Black Bear Bistro on Mother's Day. We enjoyed a wonderful meal and will definitely return!
a surprise gem found, we had a great experience. Will definitely come back.
The food was good. Service was good. Nice thing is two menus in one. Had Brussels Caesar. Should have been crunchy but it wasn’t. Turkey and Brie sandwich was good.
We ate downstairs so I gave the ambiance a three. I really prefer the old upstairs. They have great oysters. I love the bear parafenelia. The noise was low which I really appreciate (hope I marked it correctly above.)
Enjoyed the wood fire options and the outdoor dining. Would definitely go back.
Amazing find in old town Warrenton! Food and atmosphere are very nice. Great place to have conversation with friends.
Quickly seated and outside on a beautiful day. Pleased with service and food. We have been here several times and will be back.
Server was nice but food was just okay-got a burger with fries and the fries were soggy and limp. Asked for them to be well done but either her had been sitting around or were covered and steamed after cooking.
I always enjoy going to Black Bear. Food is good, however my friend did not enjoy the vegetable soup. Prices are reasonable. Have sat both inside and out and have enjoyed both the atmospheres.
Food was underwhelming. I ordered the chicken cordon blue sandwich and the chicken was extremely dry and somewhat cold. One of my friends ordered a specialty hotdog. She felt it was ok, but not as good as one she could get at Foster’s for less money. My husband had the oyster poor boy and said it was ok, but nothing to write home about. I was disappointed because I was the one who recommended going to the restaurant based largely on reviews I had read about the quality of the food. I note that we were there for lunch and it was around 3:30 pm so perhaps their focus was more on preping for the dinner crowd. I will note that the three of us split a piece of German Chocolate Cake which was delicious and thoroughly enjoyed.
Enjoyed lunch with friends. Our meals were very tasty and varied, and sizable portions. We had wings, oysters, fish poor boys, salads and brick oven calzones. Our drinks included wine, beer, ice tea. The greetings, service, and food quality and presentation was purely outstandingly. Our collective kudos to the fun staff and management, and the cooking team. We regularly trek from south Fairfax County to sup at this delight restaurant.
Five ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Our vegetarian friend was particularly happy with the menu choices.
Previous visits have been fine, especially dining on the patio. This visit I had reservation and though there were plenty of open tables when we arrived, they initially tried to seat us a a table wedged in an unlit corner behind a table with 2 small kids and a crying baby. I am fine with supporting family trying to have a meal out, but no need to seat us there with many other options. After asking to be moved to another table things were fine. However, after bringing our food, the waitress disappeared never to return. After 45 minutes after finishing our meal, and needing to get back to work, we finally had to just get up and flag down someone to find our waitress in the back to get out check so we could pay.
Service was hometown friendly, and food was delicious.
Good food and fast attentive service. The menu is unique. It is nice they have vegan options.
The Bistro is consistently excellent. This is our go-to place in Warrenton. Great job on the prime rib! And, Sarah, our server is the best!
