About Bistrot Zinc
Experience the romance of France in Chicago. The taste and feel of Paris is right here in the Gold Coast, one of Chicago’s oldest and most beautiful neighborhoods. The name Bistrot Zinc is derived from typical French bistrots where the “zinc” bar is a popular meeting place for good food, conversation and camaraderie. Moderately-priced classic & contemporary French food is served amid the ambiance of tile floors, tin ceilings, and the beautifully handcrafted zinc bar. The feeling of French authenticity prevails throughout as you step into this lively Parisian atmosphere. The lunch, brunch and dinner menus include many French favorites in addition to the monthly specials. Also offered is an extensive selection of French wines by the bottle and glass, plus French aperitifs and liqueurs.

Bistrot Zinc Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I have been visiting Chicago a couple times a year for the past 5 years. We normally stay in a nice hotel near Mich Ave; see a show or a museum; shop and eat... Every visit we select a new or different restaurant for one evening and go to Bistrot Zinc the other evening. It is a perfect place for a date... It’s casual but elegant in that French Bistro way... The food is always solid, the service always competent, the bar drinks always classically made... If you want really good food (something for everyone); a nice atmosphere; a place where you can be as comfortable in jeans and a sweater as you would a suit, then I highly recommend Bistrot Zinc!
This was our twelfth year in a row going to Bistrot Zinc for new year's eve, and it's been worth it every time. The service is always excellent, the food is consistently great, and they introduced new cocktails this year as well. Highly recommend BZ for any special occasion or night out.
The best I can say is that it is convenient to my apartment, inexpensive, always available at the last minute, conversation friendly, totally ordinary & predictable, never original & never changing menu of the old & familiar. The orange juice serving (instead of alcohol as it was lunch) was only slightly bigger than a thimble full, the ham in the slightly over-broiled Croque miseur tasteless cheese sauce came directly from a package from Jewel, but the profiterol dessert was better than ok.
We dined here at Bistrot zinc after stumbling by this place a few months ago while staying at the Ambassador down the street. We always look for new French places and while this place isn't new we enjoyed the location and once we stepped inside for our reservation we were overwhelmed by the warmed of the place. It is a large dining room and we were seated towards the back against a wall and we had plenty of room to relax and plenty of space in between the other tables so we could really enjoy our food and conversation. The menu has all of the bistro classics and we started with escargots and fois gras. both so very good. The wine list is heavily french and i settled on a Cote du Rhone...Our server was very patient and my partner noticed they had aux gratin daphinois potatoes with the rack of lamb and they allowed him to substitute those with his calves liver..which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the special lamb stew with puff pastry equally just as hearty satisfyingly good. I had to have dessert to top of the meal and settled for the sour cherry popovers which were to die for. perfect ending to one of the best meals i have had.
Two nights ago, we took a friend from out of town to Bistrot Zinc. There was a table of 6 people, three adults and three younger adults. The younger people were shouting at the top of their voices. They laughed hysterically. It was obvious that they had too much alcohol. But, the management did NOTHING to try to keep them from ruining everyone else's evening. It sure ruined ours. The three of us couldn't hear each other. Would I go back???? NEVER. I would rather have a TV dinner in the peace and quiet of my apartment.
Great place. I stay across the street at the Viceroy when I'm in Chicago which makes it easy to access. Bistrot Zinc is a great alternative to the "Chicago food". I travel often to France and the food provided here is a great example of good French food. Would recommend it highly!
I took my picky 5 year old here after a special night downtown, and was thrilled they offered a kids menu which he was very happy with his grilled cheese. But the food we ordered off the main menu was amazing! I had the sautéed skate (if I remember correctly) and it was so flavorful!! We've been to several restaurants downtown and Bistrot Zinc is one of my favorites. And it's such a lovely cafe atmosphere, we can't wait to go back!
The space is a little tired but the service was excellent and the food was reasonable. The escargots were outstanding and the wine list was nice. My croque madame was tasty but the bread was a little starchy/processed for my taste. The bistrot salad with pulled chicken was loved by all. In terms of the space, I would suggest they give it a facelift with some simple crown molding so it doesn't feel quite so much like a regular storefront decorated as a French restaurant.
Bistrot Zinc is a neighborhood gem. The food is always great; the service superior and friendly. On my last visit, I ordered the Skate fish dish and gnocchi with butternut squash. Absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. I love this restaurant and am never, never disappointed when I dine here.
My husband and I enjoyed another good meal at Bistrot Zinc. We shared a tasty cauliflower farro salad that was very unusual, an anchovy salad (really, a mild Caesar) that was fine, a trout entree that was really delicious, and an equally delicious side of Brussels sprouts. Our cocktails were well made and throughout the service was attentive and friendly. We would happily return.
