Bistro VG Ratings and Reviews
A perfect anniversary dinner
We go to BistroVG 4-5 times a year but almost always for our anniversary. It’s in our neighborhood, we like its coziness and menu and it has become our tradition.
We enjoyed delicious lamb and duck and beautifully choreographed service from our charming waiter, Cory, who made great suggestions. Thanks again BistroVG!
Went to VG for a late New Year's Eve Dinner - Kitchen was supposed to close at 11, so we had a 10:30 Reservation and showed up about 10:10. They were not having a special New Year's Menu or party as such, so ordered some of their Truffle fries and roasted oysters for appetizers. Got in our entree orders about 10:45. I had scallops and my wife the salmon. By 11:30 or so, most people were finished eating, and there was a pretty good crowd in the bar area. The (New) owners were mingling with crowd and some of their friends and family. They brought out noisemakers and hats and everyone watched countdown on TV. It was like being a a party at someone's house - really nice surprise.
Good food, sometimes a bit over done from a creativity perspective. A bit too heavy on sauces so beware. They have two dining rooms, two separate looks and feel. The main dining room is better, more formal. The other room is casual and seating is uncomfortable. They have a fireplace and bar area which is nice especially when it’s cold outside. Overall the restaurant is good and is owned by a group that owns several Alpharetta area restaurants, Made, Aspens, Vinnys, Theo Bakery
Late dinner on Christmas Eve. Heavy, unhurried crowd resulted in seating delay. Staff’s kind attention and free champagne made the wait seem short. Excellent, helpful waitstaff and wonderful dishes all around. Roasted oysters are very good. Steak with crabmeat special was exceptional, though the side was a little overdone. Lasagna was very good. Coffee alone was worth going.
My wife and I adore Bistro VG! The food is some of the best we've had in the metro Atlanta area, and the service is excellent. This is definitely one of those restaurants where we love to try something different each time we go because we haven't found anything we haven't liked yet. In addition, it's a great place for a romantic dinner to celebrate any occasion.
This is a great spot for a creative dining experience. Don't let the fact that its on a main road fool you. The chef is fabulous and the have a blend of simple and complex dishes. There is a long "community" table by the bar that welcomes those who welcome the company of others and just want a simple gathering space. Delightful.
We have been going to Van Gogh's/Bistro VG for at least two decades. It has changed ownership at least twice during that time - and it is still great. It has consistently excellent food, top notch service (Michael excels - as always), and something sort of scarce these days - good pacing. You are not rushed. Saw a few Internet complaints about the new ownership but we saw absolutely no problems. I don't know what the new owners have in mind, but I hope they understand their current strong points.
The food and service was excellent. The seating was not. I had reserved a table for 8 through OpenTable for 12:30 a number of days in advance. Two days prior I requested the seating to be increased to 9. The reservation was confirmed to Bistro VG the night before. Upon arrival I found our group was already seated in the bar area opposite the pizza oven. The table we were seated was meant to seat perhaps 7. It was far too tight for 9. Also it had no table cloth as did most of the other tables in the restaurant. In that regard I was disappointed in the respect given to my reservation.
Visited occasionally before the recent ownership change. Nicholas is a gracious host and a seasoned operator. Truly enjoyed our dinner selections, esp. those he recommended; kale salad and gnocchi. It remains a beautiful restaurant and will put it in our regular rotation of dining spots.
I selected this restaurant for my wife's birthday. I made reservations and I'm not sure why because they seemed to have had no idea we were coming nor did they have a proper table prepared for us. They were looking for a "table somewhere". The overall service was SO slow, we literally could have gone to another restaurant, eaten, and come back. I often hear from restaurants, we were busy, and that is why service was slow. This suggests that maybe you didn't know you were going to be open??? Everything was "off" just a bit. Neither steak nor lamb chops were cooked properly. "Medium" temp was requested, but we got "well". I was too hungry and too tired to wait for it to be corrected. So, was this experience isolated? No, it was the same thing the last time I came. For the record, we won't be back. I've had French food and service on three continents, and this wasn't it.
before this visit, BistroVG was likely our favorite restaurant. We were excited to bring our family in for thanksgiving for an evening out. Service was abysmal, my parents steak (I tasted it) was over cooked and unnaturally flavored. Won't be back for a while, maybe ever.
Just when you think the best couldn't get any better. We've been fans of VG for years. Under new ownership, it has gone from strength to strength. It's easy for new owners to come in and change or kill the character of a place. Not so here. We're watching as they carefully and lovingly make great adjustments. Keeping what works and elevating so many other little things. How can an arugula salad get better? We don't know, but it did, the lamb lollipops were amazing, the duck confit stunning. Even staples like the steak frites are a step above. As you can tell, we remaining loving fans of VG and with the new team every success.
