Classic French cuisine in a classically designed but very dated place. Solid dishes but non of them made us say wow. Fois gras was nice but small and didn't have the bold flavors we expected, same for the classic French onion soup, which I myself make a better soup. I had a medium cooked 6oz Tenderloin, it was cooked perfectly but a bit small and again not very bold in flavors. My partner had Duck Confit, this was a delicious diah, crispy skin, duck fat, tender meat. Sides of mac & cheese ( is that French?! ) was good, and French Fries (cooked in duck fat) which were AMAZING but a bit too salty. That was a dish I would come back for, but it was only one. Creme Brulee was nice, not anything special. The service was very very very slow. Especially the wait between dishes, but also the server seemed to be really busy with all his tables. Would help to keep more servers and cooks on a shift, we payed allot of money and we expect a fast excellent service.
Attended with two friends for a special birthday. Had asked for a table in a quiet part of restaurant. Staff worked hard to find a quiet place given that a large party of 26 were dining at the same time. The 'cozy' quality places tables fairly close to each other as one would find in a European bistro. One needs to be aware of this and if increased noise level is an issue, perhaps reserve for a time outside the main dining hours.
Staff were attentive without being clingy. While portion sizes are smaller than North American tastes are used to, the quality of food preparation and ingredients make up for it. Calves liver was tender and cooked as it should be. Lemon tart was lovely with a fine, citrusy flavour and a tender crust. My salad was fresh and tasty. Three courses was enough to keep me sated.
At the price point, I would suggest this for a special occasion.
Since John sold this business, quality has slipped and prices increased. Much like most of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver over the past 14 years.
While the food is still very good, that extra special touch is missing that gave it that typical French-European flair. I understand property taxes are rising and that's part of the crux for many businesses, but as a regular consumer, I'm saddened by this change in character driven by big money that's come to this town. I guess John picked a good time to sell.
The Duck confit is still as good as ever, but the Appies are tiny and prohibitive in price.
In addition, various prices (especially drinks) printed on the Menus don't match the prices charged at the end. A dollar or 2 more is added here and there.
Service ranged from great to grumpy. The fun french waiter was offset by the I-dont-wanna-be-here big lady, that gives you dirty looks when you don't tip enough.
We used to have many great meals here in the past for around $150 (incl. a bottle of wine), now it's difficult to stay below $200 with 2 apples, 2 mains, 1 dessert, even with just a glass of wine for 2 people.
To the new owner: I guess there's enough new deep-pocket clientele to replace us long-timers that have moved out of crazy town and only visit occasionally now. Sad to say, this was my 20th or so visit and my last. Adieu.
I have dined at Bistro Pastis on numerous occasions. The service and food NEVER fail to please! Any of the appetizers or entrees are worth trying, which are delicious, with creative spins on classic dishes and elegant presentation. The chocolate ganache is my favorite dessert offering, but of the several I have enjoyed over the years, all are noteworthy.
I was taught not to say anything negative, so I'm really disappointed that Pastis has simply lost its eleganance. It was my go to restaurant to impress my clients and friends.
Our server was pleasant ,however, suggested red quinoa dish with scallops was the equivalent of risotto which two of my guests ordered and later regretted. I enjoyed the liver, again not what was served in the past (must be new chef ) and Lamb Navarin was good. All staff are friendly, yet our server was lacking a bit with formalities like tossing dessert plates and cutlery on the table. For the price, I'd rather venture down the street to Au Comptoir or downtown to Le Tableau.
Two problems. 1. Very expensive for lunch: $110 for two; very small steak, 5 oz (which was the perfect size for us), a small bucket of chips (fine also), and chocolate mousse, plus a bottle of water and two coffees. 2. Food was fine, but small steaks in very large cold plates result in very rapid cold meat. Plates should be served extremely hot.
It's one of my go-to French restaurants in the neighbourhood. One of diners found duck confit stringy. My gluten free salmon Benedict was lovely , but without the bun and the roasted potatoes I would have appreciated some warm wilted spinach and a slice of tomat to make a nice base for the poached eggs. I didn't receive either even though I did suggest. Not sure if server passed along this request. So, slightly less pleased with one of my favourite spots in Kits.
When we arrived the lighting was very bright and there was a large, loud group seated in the back of the resteraunt. The group got most of the servers attention and we got very little. Once the group left the lighting was turned down, I guess it was bright at the request of the group. The food was ok but for the price it should have been better. We used a Travelzoo voucher and were charged 15 percent " service " for using the voucher. I understand that a large table gets more attention than a table of 2 but to be charged 15 percent " service " for the food and service we got is unacceptable. We will not be back
We had a coupon which offered 2appetizers, 2 mains & a shared dessert. What they did was tallied the bill up with the regular prices, then subtracted the amount of the coupon & automatically added 15%gratuity on the tallied amount. We took my sister out for her birthday and because we bought the coupons, she wanted to pay the bill. Her bill was twice the amount of the coupons. I was embarrassed.
The service was very good and the food was tasty, although some of the dishes were a bit too salty. Some os us are watching our salt intake for health reasons.
The Lamb was outstanding and the service overall attentive and welcoming. Unfortunately the pomme frites were a little overcooked and our server did not have great timing and would interrupt someone mid sentence to tell us about the specials. Despite this, Bistro Pastis is one of my favourite restaurants so I will be back for sure.
This was our first dinner since the restaurant changed ownership. We were not disappointed! The menu continues to offer wonderful, French bistro-style food and friendly service. The wine list has improved, with a more generous number of offerings, which was really appreciated by our party. The ambience was extremely friendly and gracious, with time from ordering to delivery being pretty quick. My dining partner and I split a salad as a starter and we were pleased that our salads arrived already split for us (at no extra cost). All in all, it was a lovely dining experience and we're delighted to have Pastis remain in the neighbourhood!
My husband and I go to Pastis most Sunday's for brunch. We order the same thing each time which is the smoked salmon Benedict. The eggs are always done perfectly and there's just the right amount of Hollandaise sauce. The frites are sensational! Service is always very good. We have also eaten dinner here with friends and family and everyone enjoyed their dinners
Went with an out of town guest. Food was good, soup a little too salty but still very tasty. My hash was excellent. Wine was pricey but not inappropriately so. Coffee was excellent. Service was good but not as smooth as it should have been for the price. Worth the visit and will go again and check out the dinner menu.
Once again Bistro Pastis was wonderful for our lunch - the food was delicious and the chef was very creative with ingredients and presentation. The service was very professional and the server was knowledgeable with regard to the menu and the ingredients used.
We have been to Pastis a number of times and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends. We will most certainly return to Pastis
The meal was delicious! Perfectly prepared, high quality ingredients, creative tastes and elegantly presented. The excellent food was equalled by eloquent and intelligent service. Take advantage of the Travel Zoo offer as we did. Bistro Pastis is worth a visit!
Pricey, but good. The restaurant seemed less formal than what we remember from past years. It was not busy, on a Sunday evening after Bard on the Beach. Extensive wine list, and tantalizing food choices. My wife and I enjoyed salads (hers the heirloom tomato, and mine the endive) with a pair of glasses of mediocre white wine. The main course was duck breast for her, and tenderloin for me. Both were felt to be very good. Desserts were a molten chocolate cake, and a trio of sorbet. With gratuity, $342.
