French
Perfect For:
  • Good for Anniversaries
  • Good for a Date
  • Quiet Conversation
A convivial atmosphere, enhanced by the cozy fire place, invites diners to
linger a while. Dinner tables are set with crisp linen, making you feel like a
welcome guest at a friend’s home. If meeting a friend for a drink or appies,
have a seat along the bar, where there’s great people-watching. Pastis is as
close as you can get to Paris without a plane ticket. It has one of the city’s
largest wine selections by the glass. Very romantic.

We were lucky and caught Bistro Pastis on a quiet night as it can usually get quite busy. This happened to be a cold, rainy night and made for a perfect date night out. There's a good selection of everything on the menu, so feel that most everyone could find something to their tastes. The restaurant is clean, cozy and feels like a fine French restaurant. Easy enough to find (Arbutus and West 4th Ave) and parking is available on the street. We both ordered the Bouillabaisse as we were craving seafood, Ample portion but would have liked to seen more seafood in this dish. Price is commensurate with Vancouver restaurant prices, so no real bargain but still worth the visit. All in all a great place to take a date or anniversary dinner with your special someone.

We have been going to Pastis for primarily lunch for a long time. It is good to see that they have upgraded the lunch menu. The Fraser Valley lamb shank is excellent. Falls off the bone. We always bring our our own bottle of red as Pastis corkage charge is quite reasonable compared to its peers.

Totally enjoyed the French Onion Soup! The service was excellent. This a comfortable restaurant to eat and enjoy with friends and loved ones.

This is one of our favorite French restaurants in Vancouver. Our only suggestion, if possible , is to space the tables for two farther apart. You can hear the conversations of others. It was particularly busy on Saturday night and I have not noticed it so much on other occasions as we were with tables of three or four people.

Came here for a date night on a wednesday evening and the restaurant was empty, but the food was delicious and the service was great. The server asked us if we wanted still or sparkling and did not warn us about the $8.50 charge for the bottle of sparkling water, I guess I should have known.... overall though was a nice evening.

Enjoyable meal. Had a table by the window. Nice ambience, good food, good service. Our server was a genuine Parisian. We used a Groupon so the value was great, but would have been good even without it.

Very enjoyable lunch at Pastis. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and attentive. Food was very good - the lamb shank was done to perfection as were the root veggies. My wife had a salmon omelette which she loved. Delicious soup to start and coffee to finish. A nice treat and a nice atmosphere.

We purchased a lunch travelzoo voucher for $39 which includes two appetizers up to $10 and two entrees up to $22 each.
The only appetizer under $10 on the entire menu is a mixed green salad.
(A very small handful of plain lettuce with some dressing) that’s it. Very very bland.
My husband ordered steak tartar for $16 which was also bland with no flavour.
The only two items on the entire menu that are under $22 are eggs which come with a salad which I don’t need as I just had a salad, or a mushroom dish.
My husband ordered a $17 ham and cheese sandwich. Awful and dry!
I ordered the sable fish for $27 as there is nothing really less than that price other than the two sandwiches.
My sable fish was on 3 kale leaves and was about 1x1 in size.
We used to go to this restaurant often.
Never ever again!
The waiter added 15% gratuity on the bill and we were a table of two.
I had one glass of wine, and my husband had two glasses.
We paid an extra $80.00 for lunch today,
So in total we paid $120 for a lunch for two.
No dessert.
We told the owner that this is not a deal at all, because they charged us extra for the appetizer and the entree.

He did not care at all.
He said the lunch menu is not the best for travelzoo as there is little selection.
He did not say sorry or anything.

Food is bland and owner does not care if you come back or not.

Our previous meals were always soooo good, but this Valentine's Day evening with a set menu of a 6 course meal was basically a bit of a huge disappointment! Our beef tenderloin was barely warm and the desert came with half melted ice cream. When we asked for a fresh scoop the server looked at us like we swore???

I do not think they have the staff or coordination ability to handle such an event.

Go for a nice dinner during the week and it is fantastic!

Cheers.

Consistently great experiences at Bistro Pastis. The mushroom veloute and braised beef cheeks were full of rich flavour, and the 2005 Bordeaux opened up beautifully. Pleasant visits with our server and our host, who is always so welcoming. Pastis continues to be at the top of our list of favourites in Vancouver!

Reasonably good options for DineOut; at least much better than many of the neighbourhood competitors. Helpful host and the tables were managed well which can be a nightmare at DineOut. The appetizers and desserts were good; could have done without the huge serving of lentils with the beef cheeks.......didn't really work and way too many lentils but the Arctic char was done nicely. Always like an excuse to go to Bistro Pastis.

I wish I could recommend Bistro Pastis- the staff are great and the room has such a good feel.
Unfortunately, the kitchen is erratic with some brilliant dishes and some poorly done- the painfully crunchy du Puy lentils comes to mind. The bar is similarly erratic, with some great drinks and wine pairings mixed with an astringent cocktail and micro-sized pours of dessert wines.

Not as good as previous occasions. The brunch menu was not very good this time.
The coffee was very poor (weak and not hot enough). There is no excuse for poor coffee in Vancouver! Overall, reasonable but not exceptional food.

The dinner menu items were reduced due to Dine Out Vancouver. They should have both the regular menu and a prix fixe menu for Dine Out. This just speaks to the laziness if the chef and kitchen staff. By accommodating Dine Out patrons they did not accommodate the repeat clientele who come back time and time again. The meal quality could have been better. This time it was not good value for money.

I recently lost a dear friend to cancer. Bistro Pastis was ‘our place’ and we would meet here two or three times a year. I wanted to have lunch with her son in January when he was in town and naturally, I chose Bistro Pastis. We ate from the Dine Out Vancouver menu and, as always, the food was superb. This is one of my favourite places to dine in Vancouver. They consistently get everything right.

Would recommend it to friends and family as a hospitable spot to spend an evening enjoying a wonderful meal in a space with great atmosphere. Look forward to retuning in the near future.

We chose this place because of the menu highlighted in Dine Out Vancouver. Sadly, it was disappointing.

I ordered the featured soup for my first course. It was tasty, but I found a long grey hair in it. A complaint garnered another bowl and a half hearted apology. My main was half a Cornish game hen that had been cooked in a sous vide and browned under a broiler. It was raw near the bone and cold. My second complaint was met with an explanation that meat cooked in sous vide "looks" raw but is actually cooked. Sorry, but pink chicken and red blood is raw in my books. Another half hearted apology. An offer to heat it through, but not replace it.

My partner's meal was prepared perfectly and she enjoyed it. So, I just had poor luck with my choices, I guess.

So, my review is negative because of the service and attitude. Had the server admitted the food hadn't been cooked properly and offered something else, I wouldn't have been so annoyed. But insincere apologies and BS excuses for improperly prepared food aren't acceptable.

And, to top things off, we were charged full price with no offer of a discount or refund. They even charged $2 for bread and butter!

This was my first visit to Pastis in a while and it was great to find the place still fully worthy of my fond memories. This is a house that cares about the legacy of French cuisine. My Arctic char was sublime -- tender, juicy and delicious. Made me wonder how they can get fish to taste that good. As my dining partner quipped when I sang the praises of the light and scrumptious chocolate mousse: "Can't go wrong here."

This was our first time to Bistro Pastis. We went with some friends for Dineout Vancouver 2018. 2 of us had the dine out menu and the other 2 ordered from the regular menu. We went for Dine-out Vancouver and ordered from the event specific menu.
My starter was nice, my husbands wasn't.
My husband's main was good, mine was terrible.
My desert was good, my husbands was OK at best.

I will not be going back and will not recommend the place to a friend. Especially given that there are multiple excellent places to eat in that area, including a french restaurant with a similar price range.

On a side note: When they called to confirm my reservation, they verified that it was my husband's birthday and asked for his name. I never expect anything for a special event, but if you're questioning me about it over the phone, shouldn't you do something about it? Stick a candle in the desert or something?
