Though I live 550kms away, it is always worth a visit to Bistro Nolah. Easily the best New Orleans inspired resto in Canada, and one of the two or three best outside of New Orleans itself. Service is attentive, not intrusive, beverages are well crafted and very tasty, food is spectacular. It is a mistake not to have appetizers, mains and dessert. In particular, and it IS hard to single any one thing out, the crab cake appetizer, OMG!!! I have brought friends and family here over the years, and all have been impressed and delighted.

Cute little restaurant with few tables and a cozy atmosphere. A good wine list but a bit overpriced. The service was excellent, the waiter seemed very experienced, he was really pleasant. The prices are a bit high for the offering. My husband and I shared an order of crab cakes for appetizer, they only served one, it was awful. It tasted bland, it was mushy and felt as if it had been frozen then heated up in the microwave. My main course was the blackened catfish; the plate presentation was beautiful and colourful. The fish was good but not blackened, instead it was coated in a spice rub, served on top a sweet potato puree which was okay but not hot enough. My husband had the brisket, served on top of mashed potatoes - okay . We were tempted by the bananas foster cheescake - nothing special.

We were there for a friend’s 65th birthday and the evening was most disappointing! To begin with, a credit card was required just to secure a reservation, but we complied. Food wasn’t great. Portions were small & prices high! Waiter’s description of menu items & portions was inaccurate based on what we got. He was forgetful & needed to be reminded repeatedly for items asked for. Long wait for meal & dessert. At the end of the meal we questioned why the payment machines had NOT been adjusted as per the May 7th government rule regarding tipping percentage being calculated before taxes & the waiter acted like he didn’t know, so left to “check”. He returned to say it was “the government that had not updated the machines & it is their fault”. One of our group told the waiter that she works at The Gazette and knows that it is the restaurant’s responsibility (not the government’s) to do whatever is necessary to adhere to the rule. His demeanour changed after this and he then rudely and abruptly told us that the next reservation for our table had arrived, so we had 2 minutes to leave - quite unacceptable to speak to patrons that way! We were all shocked but promptly got up to leave. Another staff member from the restaurant ran after us saying that the manager wanted to speak to the person who complained. She went back in and the manager told her that his waiters have been instructed to inform all patrons (at payment time) that the machines have not yet been adjusted so we need to take note of this when tipping (she told him that our waiter never did). His explanation was completely different from the waiter’s, saying that the machine company is the issue as they have not reprogrammed the machines yet. We left the restaurant not really knowing who was telling the truth. It was a subpar experience from beginning to end and we will not be returning to Bistro Nolah again.
