The food wasn’t good, however cold. The service was terrible, it took an hour forty five.
We went to Bistro Joe's for dinner, but since we arrived in time for happy hour we opted for the "snacks' menu. Service was outstanding. Food was very good if not remarkable. Our request to sit on the indoor/outdoor deck was graciously accommodated.
Limited menu, tho 3 of the 4 main courses that the 4 of us ordered were very good. Excellent waitress! Ambience: Unpleasantly noisy!! Everyone was yelling and probably had to yell to be heard over everyone else who was yelling. No acoustics to absorb loud voices.
The food was awesome and knowing the market is below makes for a daily fresh menu. That’s a great idea for a Michigan restaurant!!!
The service is a little questionable due to the fact the servers had to many tables to handle which they cannot truly cherish the guest.
We tried Bistro Joes for the first time this week for dinner. I'd read they were having July lobster month and it was the last day of July, so I made reservations and we went. There were a couple of lobster dishes, but they were $62, which felt high in that casual environment, so I passed on the lobster and got short ribs for about half that (they were good!) My husband got mahi mahi tacos, which were disappointing, but he was able to take my leftover short ribs to work for lunch the next day. They have generous portions and the waiter was nice but also extremely busy. It's a hopping place and very noisy/crowded on the section overlooking Woodward Avenue. We couldn't hear each other talk! It's unlikely we'll be back, although I regularly grocery shop in the store below, Papa Joes.
It had the potential to be good. Our food took over an hour to come out, yet they didn't seem that busy. When we did get our food, all four of our plates tasted like it had been sitting under a warming lamp for a very long time, so we are still confused as to why it took an unacceptable amount of time. Never got one apology from the waiter. If the food had been fresh it would have been good, but it wasn't.
Amazing sea bass with forbidden rice-can't wait to return!
While the food was good the service was poor. The wait staff had too many tables to cover. We ate on the enclosed deck which was glassed in and the noise level was almost painful. We had lunch there a week prior and the place was almost empty. The service was great and the noise almost non existant.
Excellent menu with plenty of choices to satisfy all. Inventive cuisine and old standbys make for a great mix.
The oysters were fine, the Sicilian flatbread as well. The Niqoise salad left something to be desired. There was too much dressing and the salmon too well done. The other salad was also good
Quite a surprise. Was looking for brunch in suburbs of Detroit, and came across this bistro above a great super market. Don’t be deceived by its being in a mini strip mall. This is a gem. I can’t wait visiting Detroit again to check it out for dinner.
Great service and food! The view of Woodward is great for car watching too!
We sat overlooking Papa Joe's--very entertaining. I like this place! I don't eat wheat, but I always find something great to heat here.
Food was good as always. There's always something good in the specials.
I can rely on Bistro Joe's for flavor and freshness. I almost always order a salad; I had the spicy shrimp salad this time and it was tasty and not terribly spicy. I appreciate the never-ending iced tea and water, especially sitting out in the sun on the balcony. Terrific, attentive waitstaff.
Food was delicious as always! Service was excellent.
We frequent Bistro Joes fairly often (twice a month), as we live nearby. It is our "go-to" for Happy Hour. Overall we're pleased with the experience and recommend it for casual dining. The food is consistently good - for brunch, Happy Hour and dinner. alike. We love the lively atmosphere, but are many times somewhat disappointed with the service. The wait staff often seems overwhelmed and not always well informed.
Bistro Joe's has a great selection of healthy options. I come here every time I'm in town. The Bistro combined with the market make it easy to take other dishes home to be tried later.
Our food, drinks and service were awesome!
Great happy hour and wonderful dinner choices. The staff is very attentive.
Loud drunks next to us
The server was terrible.. we waited over 30 minutes for some food to arrive.. the server claimed there was a problem in the kitchen, but others around who came in either after or at the same time and had a different server had been served. Also the floor of the area we sat in was dirty, and there was dirt that had accumulated between the flooring and the floor to ceiling windows.. that was not appetizing.
Great ambiance and atmosphere! Nice selection of Happy Hour drinks and food! One of my go-to's on a Friday!
The manager, on duty, always seems to have an unpleasant attitude when she working. She glanced at us as she walked by. Clearly, we were both finished our meals, empty plates in front of us. Could she have lifted a finger to clear the platters off the table? No. Absolutely, not. Just an example of an awful manager and her poor service and attentiveness.
Service was slow and our waiter had no personality. We had to go find our waiter multiple times to ask for drink refills and inquire on our food. There weren't many people in the restaurant yet it took over 2 hours to get our food. I let the restaurant know ahead of time we were coming to celebrate my daughters graduation - it was not a good experience nor the "celebratory" dinner we expected.
Food is amazing. But service is hit or miss. Patio is nice but not open air.
We were visiting from out of town and by chance wound up going to Bistro Joe's for a late bite to eat. It's a cool concept as it sits above and overlooks a specialty gourmet market. Kayla the bartender waited on us and was fantastic. An excellent server but even better at conversation. We shared the black angus sliders, the meat tasted so fresh and the carmelized onions were on point. The ahi tuna appetizer was fresh and tasty. Everyone there from the owner to manager couldn't have been nicer. If we ever get back to the area we are definitely going to Bistro Joe's.
Having dinner at one of my favorite bistros, the food is typically great; today the service was off just a hair.
I had made a reservation on open table, because the place can get packed at happy hour. The hostess seemed to be bothered that I asked to be seated where it was cool; as she was getting ready to seat me at the (nearly full) bar, the manager (I’m assuming) told her to seat me at one of the many empty tables. She was not happy to have been over ruled; was it my name, was it the way I looked, I mean, I’m dressed in jeans and a casual shirt? BTW, the hostess never made eye contact with me the entire time I was there. She was very welcoming to other guests though.
Finally the waitress showed up; I only had a few minutes till end of happy hour prices. I ordered a beer and 6 oysters. Whoever shucked the oysters was a rookie and non-eater; they were “ripped”, served on the flat shell (no oyster liquor), no crackers, and had a fair amount of grit.
I asked about specials, there was a soft shell crab appetizer; the waitress did not know how many were in an order, or how they were prepared. I also had hummus and pita ( I know odd combination, but what I wanted.). Anyway, the crabs were superb as was the hummus. The waitress efficiently removed my plate, did not offer to box the hummus. I asked her for 2 boxes to keep the pita separate, got a snide comment, “ok 2 boxes”. And I had to ask for a spoon to transfer the hummus.
She dropped off the check, but never asked if I wanted dessert till I asked her. Only filled my water once.
My point of this rant is that service employees need to pay attention to details; and certainly treat all customers equally. I did not feel welcome here, my tip and accompanying comment on the receipt reflected that.
The hostess and wait staff however did treat other customers with a smile; especially the owners (I’m assuming) who sat across from me. Maybe I should expect these minor issues, it is Birmingham!
Comsitantlyngood food and great happy hour value.
An interesting atmosphere as you are looking down on the Papa Joe's shoppers or cars on Woodward which can be fun especially for people watching. We went at the end of Happy Hour and it was very crowded and lively. After Happy Hour the crowd seemed to thin out. The food was good and the wait staff was efficient. Our waitress was not very friendly but the service was adequate. We had the brussel sprout appetizer and it was delicious.
We had excellent service and the food was fantastic. Very nice experience!
I love their grits! Food here is delicious!
Food was great, Mother’s Day so expected to be busy, however it was a full hour before we received our food. We had tables behind and across from us that received food before us and we were here prior to them even being sat. Just an omelette and a waffle, shouldn’t take from 2:15-3:09 before getting it. Server was super apologetic and kept checking in with us and he was great, and we were understanding being the day it was, just felt like a manager could’ve stepped in at some point instead of leaving our server to fend for himself.
Very unassuming from the outside but once you are inside it's quite wonderful. This was my first visit and the service, atmosphere and food were exquisite. The Bartenders were awesome and very knowledgeable. I will be visiting again and again.
Mother’s Day celebration. Great brunch and good fresh food!
The food here is always fresh and there are a lot of really good options. Most of what we had was delicious -- the gooey cheddar omelette was very good, the breakfast flatbread was very good, the bacon omelette was very good! The french toast was delicious but I would have been disappointed if we ordered it before we saw it - it's literally one piece of bread (very large) with great toppings---but still one piece of bread. It was a fun breakfast dessert to share, but I wouldn't have been happy if it was a meal I had ordered. The corned beef hash skillet was honestly disgusting. It came with a big glob of fatty corned beef laying on top of it - not even shredded or trimmed - it honestly made me sick to my stomach just to see it. The chipotle coleslaw is on top which means it makes the potatoes in the skillet mushy.....that menu item needs to change. The lamb sandwich was delicious.
Good brunch spot
I’ve been here quite a few times for dinner where everything was great but this time wasn’t what I expected. I ordered the tomahawk steak to share and it was one of the toughest steaks I’ve ever had. It was so tough that even a steak knife wasn’t sharp enough for it. Honestly, it was terrible and I regret not complaining while still there.
I love the food! It’s always delicious! And the grits are simply divine! The staff is friendly! Bistro Joe’s is always MY “Go To Restaurant.”
