Bistro Don Giovanni -- Napa Ratings and Reviews
Stopped here for lunch after relaxed tasting at
Cakebread. Reservations were at 1:15 pm. We arrived at about 1:00 and were seated immediately outside. Seemed quiet and day was spectacular - warm and clear - with the fountain providing nice water fall like background that masked auto and
Waiter was attentive without being pushy and made sure our meal was gluten free as we are gluten intolerant. We had salads and shared the risotto with short ribs. I had Caesar salad and my wife had the beet salad. Both were excellent - properly dressed without too little or too much - with fresh greens and wonderful beets. The short ribs, served without the bones, were fork tender and delicious and the risotto with fresh peas and asparagus was outstanding.
We shared raspberry and lemon sorbet for desert, as we were too full for the flourless molten chocolate cake. The raspberry was great although the lemon was a little too tart for my taste, and I love very tart lemon sorbet - but overall meal and experience was so good it still deserves 5 of 5.
Highly recommended- we have never been disappointed here and we are very picky.
After being greeted by wonderful hosts on a busy night, the service went downhill. Dropped valentine flowers at our table, then took it away saying it wasn't ours. We laughed it off.
Water glasses and bread plates were caked on with food. We asked to get them replaced. The salad came without new water glasses or bread plates. They forgot and apologized.
We waited over 40 minutes and the main course never came. The waiter came by and said the kitchen screwed up the order and never filled it. From order to delivery of food - 1 full hour.
The food was good though as I expect from this establishment. The manager offered to give us dessert. We refused though he did not charge us for our glasses of wine. I have eaten here a number of times and have enjoyed the food. The manager was fine and the greeter made us feel special. The waiter and or the kitchen staff are incompetent. Sorry for the bad review. Hope it was an aberration.
Being greeted at the entrance by mr. Giovanni was just the beginning of an outstanding evening on Valentine's Day with friends from New Jersey. The food and the service could not have been better. The atmosphere is elegant yet the feeling of friendship made our experience very comfortable and memorable.
Decent Italian food but not worth a return visit. Pricey, loud, hard to get into, temperature issues, server stretched thin, a lengthy meal. The $21 Risotto was good, with meat sauce, ala carte. The pizza came fast, like an appetizer, but was thin and greasy. Avoid sitting in the add-on patio room in winter, especially in the corners. You’ll bake from the overhead heaters, or freeze they turn them off, or if peeps are coming & going through the glass doors. Highly rated here and on trip advisor, but we don’t concur. Be careful when leaving if driving to the south- the intersection in the middle of Highway 29 takes a serious dip and is unlighted, very confusing, and certainly not up to modern standards. Instead, turn right and make a u turn further up the highway, trust me.
We try to go once a month and the food and service never disappoint. They are very willing to make alterations on the menu items to suit your taste, dietary needs, or mood. The staff is always welcoming. I would suggest reservations, but they will try to accommodate you if you do not have one.
Excellent rustic Italian food, friendly knowledgeable service, a cheerful room, a decent wine list - all at reasonable prices. What's not to like? Bistro Don Giovanni has been a Napa Valley go-to spot, for locals and tourists alike, for 25 years! We're always pleased and we always come back.
My friend and I had not been to Don Giovanni for maybe 8-12 months...we have both loved this spot, and so we were happy to return.
The food was delicious (happy about that) the cocktail I had was my favorite, a pear drop...I couldn’t wait to taste it again...it was not as wonderful as it had been, not sure why.
The waiter we had was weak. Not overly friendly and rather casual...in the past we have had great waiters...seems like there had been quite a turnover...it was disappointing...great food, however.
Been here before and loved the spaghetti w/clams and the Meyer lemon mousse cake so brought guests to celebrate a birthday here. Much to my disappointment, the spaghetti was so incredibly salty, it was awful. The dessert fortunately was delicious. I had talked up the restaurant so much, it was a little embarrassing. Made a special trip from SF and it fell short!
all three of us loved our choice for a friends birthday lunch -- the meatballs were delicious and so was the sautéd spinach -- the day was beautiful and we would have sat on the patio if it was not already filled -- glad we had a reservation. We will now make it a destination lunch for the other 2 birthdays!
We were meeting friends for lunch in the Napa area and decided to have lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni. What a great treat! First of all, the weather was perfect! A bright, sunny February day with temperatures in the mid 70's. So, we opted to sit out on the patio to enjoy the beautiful day. Our meal started out with a braised Brussel sprout appetizer that we all shared as we decided upon our entries. Two of us had the Salmon accompanied by delightful creamy garlic mashed potatoes. The others had Lamb, and a Boar and pasta selections. We all were raving about how wonderful the food was. We accompanied the meal with a Patz & Hall Pinot that was enjoyed by all, as well. We ended the meal with a round of deserts. I was so focused on my Alfogata and a couple of espressos, that I didn't notice what the others ordered. It was a wonderful afternoon, good food, good friends in an ideal location.
