Bistro de la Gare
Have been to Bistro de la Gare before, and this time we resolved to test out the Italian side of the menu. I had the Linguini Bolognese, and the pasta was perfectly to-the-tooth; the meat sauce tasted more of meat than of tomato, but had plenty of both -- the portion was ample and made for a second meal at home the next day. The Butternut Squash soup was not over-salted, and rich with pureed squash and cream. My companion ordered the mussels (Moules Mariniere), which included an enormous portion of very fresh large, meaty mussels, which were not tough nor chewy and tasted of white wine and a little butter -- outstanding! The waitress' knowledge of the menu and as to the tendency of the dishes and the wines was excellent, and we were well-advised when we asked questions. Our special request as to our table was honored, as was our experience on a prior visit.
Great except for having to wait for a table and having a reservation?
Very friendly welcoming service. Very welling to answer questions and modify food to our tastes. Food was tasty and appropriate portions. Tolerated our exceptional requests. Highly recommended.
Excellent food and service. I always bring guests to the great restaurant
Very warm atmosphere, good for family dinners and dates, great service and value, pleasant, spacious
The overall ambiance and food could be better. There is an unfriendly French woman who needs to learn how to smile. The American female server was good though.
This neighborhood gem brings authentic French food to your table with grace and warmth. The servers' guidance is superb on things such as wine pairings, and the overall level of service is excellent. Indoor or outdoor options for seating also enhance the experience.
Service at end of evening getting check was slow but otherwise everything else was wonderful!
Everything at Bistro de lare Gare exceeds expectations. The more traditional dishes are tweaked just enough to make them interesting, without straying too far from tradition that expectations aren't met; the sparing use of salt in the recipes allows the inherent flavor and freshness of the ingredients to shine through. Service is extraordinary and individualized as well as attentive; even our special requests were happily met. We will continue to return again and again, and the choice of several different atmospheres will make each visit unique (indoors away from open air; outdoors, sidewalk; indoors with open window to the outside, etc.). Bistro de la Gare also crosses over between French and Italian and Swiss cuisine touches with ease and flair.
There were 3 of us. I had the trout, my husband the shrimp linguini and our friend ordered the duck. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse and lemon sorbet. It was a perfect evening. Really lovely dinner and ambience.
We sat outside so it was quiet. We had a delicious dinner with excellent service. This is one on our favorite neighborhood restaurants.
Tried and true food, service, and ambiance. Nothing beats Bistro de la Gare!
Been coming here for 2 years and loved it. Great food, nice ambience. Last visit food was bland, service only fair. My husband had the duck because he had it before and it was moist and delicious. This time it was dry, although the side dishes were prepared nicely. I had the trout, which was very bland, as were the mashed potatoes and creamed arrugula. It just lacked interest. Being a Sunday night, and not expecting a large crowed I assume, there was only one waitress. There was never more than 7-8 tables occupied at one time. The kitchen help brought the entree, which is OK, but the waitress never checked on us. By the time she came back, and finally with a dessert menu, we were tired of waiting so we asked for the check. Very disappointed as this was an anniversary dinner (& they knew it) and at these prices you expect better service and food. Just on a side note, a/c fan was blowing continuously on our table, so I switched with my husband. Thirty minutes before we left, it totally shut off and became stuffy inside. Also, being such a quiet restaurant, a little tasteful background music would have been pleasing. If this were my first visit, I would not return, but I will give them another chance to improve.
Amazing food, very friendly staff!!
Fantastic dinner! Bruno and Fabienne made the evening wonderful. Great food and ambiance.
Every dish we had was delicious, service was top notch, cocktails were yummy. We will definitely go back and try more dishes.
Always a fantastic experience when dining here. We try to go often as we love the food and the ambience.
Great food and great service! Chef came by to say “hi” twice and we felt very welcomed!
Everything was excellent! The one caveat I would add is that the Pasadena market is held on that street every Thursday, which makes the outdoors sitting somewhat less pleasant; especially at the evening time, when the vendors are disassembling their stands, making quite a ruckus.
Food was delicious and a cute restaurant space. We sat outside and it was lovely. Our server could not have been more inattentive. It was not busy at all but never checked on us after she took our dinner order. We finally had to flag down another server to get a water refill.
We loved this Bistro! Food was delicious - Tomatoes, burata & arugula app was fantastic! Mussels with French fries and the lamb entrees were perfect! Service was slow because there was only one server initally so water and drinks were forgotten. Adorable little place with great ambiance .
Great food and wine. Would highly recommend to others and definitely return for another meal
First time customer and really liked it. Very cute and nice restaurant.
Great eggplant appetizer!
Jose was a perfect waiter. Recommend him highly. Lovely atmosphere and great food.
Excellent service from the start, beginning with the table out front, and the waitress knowing exactly how to stop it from rocking without having to shove anything under there. Drinks came quickly, and then my furiously sizzling escargot, delicious as always and remarkably large and tender, with plenty of fresh herbs and butter in each pocket. The main courses called for wine refills, promptly again. Her big bowl of mussels and beyond-perfect frites and my trout filets over mashed potato were beautifully presented, though I found the fish to be unfortunately bland, giving no particular contrast to the richly sauced potato. The accompanying baby broccoli saved the plate, I think. Instead of more wine we ordered the chocolate mousse, possibly the best we've ever had, just as another group of delightful people showed up, bringing out our chef to greet them and providing a fine cap on the evening.
This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and is a super room.
Go early as it can get noisy in the evenings.
It's lovely on a Thursday between 5 and 7pm as it's right in the middle of the super South Pasadena farmers market, and you can sip wine and watch people do their shopping.
Great ambiance,. We ordered the specials and were not disappointed!!
Escargot appetizer was good. Six escargots for four. Good for dipping bread in sauce or putting escargot on bread. Cauliflower side was very good. Dates added a contrasting sweetness without being overly sweet. One person in our party had trout which was simply prepared and liked it. Another had the orata fish with carrot purée and ratatouille. She said the eggplant was delicious. Another had shrimp linguine which was very tasty. I had the mussels with fries. It was a large portion of mussels which were well seasoned but not as much broth as I would have liked. For dessert we shared the tarte tatin and crepe Suzette. The preference was for the tarte tatin.
Good food but they were short staffed again so service was slow and not great. Wish they would either turn on AC or add a few ceiling fans. We tend to avoid that restaurant in warm weather because it’s so warm in there.
We have made this our destination for my wife's birthday for the past several years and have been consistently happy with the experience. The food is always terrific but what sets this place apart from other excellent restaurants is the wonderful service (thank you Lorena!) and ambiance. An outdoor table in the summertime is a special treat.
Love this place it’s very authentic French restaurant great service and the food was amazing as usual . Very cozy and comfortable. Thanks
Two out of three guests were not too happy with their food selection. Positive was the moules marinaires entree with beautiful french fries, but the guest who ordered the evening's fish specialty was put off by the fish's appearance, an unappetizing black slab, although it tasted good. the third guest did not like his hamburger-like entree, and just picked at it.
Charming bistro ambiance with nice selection of traditional and current food choices. Waitress had excellent knowledge of daily specials. Perfect for a romantic evening.
One of the best in Pasadena area .
Lovely, relaxed atmosphere with very good French food. A bit pricy but very tasty. Parking available nearby.
The restaurant is not inexpensive but worth every penny. One of our favorite restaurants for any occasion.
Bistro de la Gare has the ambiance and charm one Hope's to find in a French Bistro. The food is very good an the service is excellent. Excellent for a romantic dinner date or a friendly dinner with friends.
We loved the chef’s inspiration of the day...salmon layered with phyllo and spinach! It was delicious! Hope it makes the regular menu so I can have it again!!
