   High class 'real' cooking and excellent value from the £19 three course early evening menu with our booking at 18.45 on a Saturday night. Very impressed with the wine and well worth the 15 minute walk up the hill out of Durham town centre. Delicious dessert of coconut panna cotta with a passion fruit base with just a sprinkling of chopped mango on top - very subtle indeed!

   Disappointed as expensive night. Menu a little over complicated especially starters. Wasn't wowed.. Which was a shame..

   Great food, perfect service. We chose from the early evening menu which had loads of choice.When we arrived there was only one other table occupied but the ambience was still great...and it remained great even when the place was much busier later in the evening.

   We took our son and friends out to dinner as part of his 21st celebrations and the staff from booking to bill could not have been more helpful and friendly. we were offered a private room at no extra cost, the most beautiful ( and delicious )chocolate fudge cake was made for the occasion by the restaurant and the staff were absolutely lovely. The meal was excellent and so was the service - we would definitely go again for any reason!

   The food was excellent and high quality. The service friendly and efficient and the ambiance good. Overall the evening was excellent and I would go back again.

   As a frequent diner of all 3 Laybourne restaurants in Newcastle we were looking forward to our first lunch at Bistro 21. There were four of us dining and first time at this venue for us all. We chose from the set lunch menu and chose the pork loin, chorizo and bean stew as a main. When it arrived the meat looked more like belly pork and I queried it with the waitress who went to the kitchen to verify with the chef that it was indeed pork loin from a rare breed pig and therefore a higher fat content. I am a very accomplished Cook who eats out frequently and have NEVER seen pork loin like this! I purchase rare breed meat and have never had so much fat on a plate as pork loin! The maître did deal with this by offering free desserts.

    We arrived at least 30 mins early, Our table was at least 20 mins late. Everyone was not served at the same tine, which led to people having to wait on all 3 courses. 2 of the party ordered Cheese boards to be told they had ran out of crackers & served bread instead??? The total Bill included a 10% gratuity, which I totally disagree with. I always tip, But I make the decision on how much not them. As I am the one eating and receiving the service this should be my choice . There was a £25 tip included which we all decided to half as the service had not been up to its usual standard. I also run a business, which works on a tip basis, the clients decides on the amount, we do not add it to the bill, That would be RUDE....
