Bistro 18 Ratings and Reviews
A snowy night and an 8:45pm post-movie reservation. Overall food was prepared well. The escargot fra diablo could have been hotter (temperature; the spice was spot on), so I was concerned for future dishes. The pumpkin squash ravioli was perfectly portioned and caramelized walnuts a perfect complement. Hanger steak entree adequate, and seafood medley perfect and well presented. For a slow night due to weather, i think the staff was anxious to leave, but ambience and overall experience pleasant
It was our first time here and overall we enjoyed the evening and the food was very good. The atmosphere was just OK, and we ended up with an acceptable table after I rejected the first two--one right by the door on a very cold night; the second right outside the bathroom bathed in fluorescents, despite the fact the the restaurant was practically empty. The waiter was efficient but not overly friendly, which was OK, but didn't enhance the experience at all. Overall, a good meal for an everyday night.
Fish meals are usually the best. We sat at the window seating which we always find a pleasing experience. Service was attentive and easy going. We’ve been there several times. It’s our go to place when we want a reasonable seafood dinner while enjoying a nice bottle of wine. The restaurant is BYOB.
The cocaine train kept running to the bathroom. Also when I reserved o didn't expect to then get the worst table near the front door. So I asked for a better table and was obliged. That said table choice from the host was the one all the way in the back next to the restroom. When a guest says they don't want to sit near the door typically should give you the insight that the table in the bathroom is also not ideal.
We would've been fine sitting there, honestly. It's just that we had a group having g some fun that kept going in pairs or triples to the bathroom to do a little tootsky. They kept knocking on the door as if the coke fairy would only answer with a particular knock. That knock was something like, "Hey Tina open the f-ing door". Good for them for real but horrible for my quiet evening on my wife's birthday.
Food was solid and our waiter great.
Great menu with a variety of items. Good service and ambiance although not sure I would want to sit outside in the atrium in the middle of winter. BYOB keeps the cost down which is good. We were happy with our dinners but absolutely LOVED the tres leches cake. Would recommend.
Overall, we had a very pleasant experience. I had made a reservation via Open Table and I did not realize that I made it for the wrong night. In spite of the situation, the maitre d was very polite, friendly and accommodating and we were quickly seated. We ordered the vegetarian dumpling appetizer special that came with hoisin sauce and a spicy aioli dipping sauce. The dumplings were tender, crispy and very flavorful with the sauces. I ordered the perch special which was served with guacamole and a black bean puree over jasmine rice. The fish was tender and the entree was very tastey. My husband ordered the short ribs over mashed potatoes and thought they were wonderful. For dessert we ordered the apple strudel with vanilla ice cream which was perfect for sharing as it came in two pieces. We thought the prices were a little steep given the ambiance was a bit more casual than formal.
Four of us were "taste testing" for an upcoming event, and had never been to Bistro 18 before. We were seated in the outside, glass enclosed section. Despite it being a very cold night, the enclosed area was warm and comfortable. The only complaint would be that waiting customers were standing in the same are, which made it feel crowded and sometimes noisy.
The food was very good. Entrees ranged from salmon to rack of lamb. We only had salads for appetizers, which were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. One diner had the steak special - unfortunately I cannot remember the cut - but he said it was excellent. Overall, all entrees were excellent. My salmon was perfectly prepared. None of us left anything on the plate!
I'm not sure why we'd never eaten here before, but the service was good for a Montclair Sat. night, the food was good, and we would definitely return. The restaurant doesn't get much play in the area, considering the word -of- mouth recommendations for other noteworthy Montclair restaurants, but it is deserving of more. Prices were about average, or maybe even a little lower, than the usual in Montclair. Like many Montclair places, it is BYO.
In a trendy restaurant town like Montclair where competition is fierce, Bistro 18 maintains itself as a consistently good restaurant. I have never been disappointed in dining there. There are no throwaway entrees. Everything is freshly prepared with care. The service is great with a very friendly and accomodating staff. Cutting edge? No but every time we dine there, we are reminded what a good restaurant this is!
We were seated in a glass enclosed area outside of the restaurant itself. This is an area reserved for access to other shops in the strip mall. The restaurant was not full at this time so i'm not sure why they would seat people here. If the restaurant wants reviews of "ambience" they should seat their guests inside of the restaurant. Patrons of the other business came in while we were dining and were loud and disruptive. Other guests dining made similar comments. The host was friendly and accommodating.
We enjoyed our meals and the service was attentive but not intrusive. I loved being able to order wine (from a large selection) from a local wine shop and have it delivered within minutes. We live 60 miles away but would consider coming again when we’re in the area.
Entree and dessert were good, but the appetizer was not and was hugely over-priced in the bargain. Though the service was very attentive on first being seated, the place is so understaffed that everything - from receiving water and bread, to having our orders taken, to delivery of all 3 portions, to paying the check - took forever. A simple before-the-movie meal that could have been accomplished in an hour or so, took nearly two hours and almost got us to our show late. That might have been understandable had they been crowded, but there were several open tables in our room.
Had been there before but this was terrible. Had to ask waiter after 15 min to take our order, then we were told they ran out of the appetizer. After about 40 minutes waiter said entrees would be right out. Waiter disappeared, 15 more minutes and had to ask manager about food. Eventually it came and it was just ok. Kitchen was backed up all night. I get having an off night, but this was inexcusable.
This is an excellent restaurant with great service. The food was delicious and the dessert was beautiful and delicious. The fish was perfectly prepared and plated. The eggplant napoleon even when sent back was still not sufficiently cooked for the eggplant and cheese to be soft. We would still very happily go to this restaurant regulary.
WE were four guests and the table we were given, though lovely, was in a very noisy spot. We asked to be moved to a less noisy table. Both wait staff and manager could not have been more gracious or accommodating. It made a huge difference in our enjoyment of the evening. The food is always reliable, wait service always very good, same waiters for many years who take the measure of the table and act accordingly, not a feeling of being rushed. The young manager is very gracious and eager to please.
