Please join us in our atrium or two main dining rooms.
Four of us went to dinner on the weekend that everything was closing down because of the coronavirus.
There were 3 other tables and we were all well separated. So it was much more quiet than normal. Food was great as always
Food was good, but nothing to rave about. I ordered escargot, which I love, and have only seen it made one way: in an escargot pan with butter and garlic. This escargot is sautéed in tomato sauce, and it says nothing about that on the menu (or I wouldn't have ordered it). I also ordered a swordfish and shrimp special: the swordfish was tough and unappealing. The rest of the dish, the shrimp and vegetables, was delicious. Other entrees and eggplant appetizer were good, but just OK. Atmosphere is nice, although layout is strange. Service was the strong suit.
The food is very good at Bistro 18. However our visit on Saturday, Feb 15th was very harried. Perhaps the restaurant was short a staff member because the service was slow and haphazard. We did not get water until well into our meal and it was not refilled until the end. The server was very curt. The special avocado salad was only 4 small pieces of avocado and a bunch of arugula for $12. The salmon entree was very good. I will return to Bistro 18 but not on a Saturday.
Birthday dinner with adult children. It seemed as though staff was short. We were given a table in the back and forgotten.
It took us an hour to get bread, and it was 90 minutes before soup and salad were delivered.
One bowl of soup had less than the other, as though some had spilled.
It’s a shame, the food was tasty—but the servings were small.
The waiter delivered a dessert to share to make up for the service.
Not enough waitstaff for the volume of customers. Waited over 30 minutes before anyone came to take or orders. The food was mediocre. I ordered the Tuna Steak rare and it came out gray in the middle.
Service was incredibly slow - it felt like being in an old class room - smell was weird, sort of musty. Wouldn't go back again.
Bad service. Not enough servers. Food was very average
It was ok...food was ok, the space was quiet. Oddly they kept trying to seat everyone right next to eachother despite having open tables on valentines day. At one point during the meal our waiter disappeared for a while and came back with his shirt un buttoned and his tie loose. Not sure what the deal with that was. We ended up having to order dessert from the hostess.
One of the best attributes of this restaurant is that it has a quaint glass enclosed outer seating space. This is great for more intimate conversations without the excessive noise in most other Montclair eateries. Value-wise it's on the expensive side but certainly within the range of most others in Montclair. I've been here a number of times and choose to return.
I've been going to Bistro 18 since 2005 and still enjoy eating there. I find the waiters always attentive and the food never disappoints. Can't go wrong eating here.
Good food and great service. We’ve been coming here for a few years and the never disappoint. Also byob and free parking
My wife and I had dinner at Bistro 18 last night. We used to dine there regularly but had not been there for some time. Boy have things changed - for the worst!. Clearly new chef and likely new ownership since we dined there last.
When we arrived for our 7PM reservation and only 3 tables were filled should have been a red flag. This used to be a tough reservation.
We shared the eggplant tower appetizer. It was not the tower. Ingredients were old and chewy. My wife had the short ribs - always a great dish, and I the surf and turf special. Mine was "OK" but not worth the $37 price tag. Not sure how the short ribs were prepared, but something had to be bad as she was violently sick during the night. So sad.
The only bright spot was our waiter. He was there when we dined there in the past and his service was still superb!.
Bistro 18 - off our dining list. If you do go, it will likely be off yours too.
We all had a different dish Pasta with Lamb Ragu,Salmon over wasabi mashed potatoes, Short Ribs . All the desserts were tasty, Creme brûlée, cheese cake , apple dumpling and Titamisu. We also liked that it was a BYOB. Great for a large group and also romantic for a table for two.
Found Bistro 18 just by luck.
We were going to Montclair to see our grand children at their high school.
As we walked in it had a warm comfortable feeling with soft lighting and a relaxing ambience.
Our waitress was a sweet person who knew her offerings and made some suggestions that were spot on.
We didn’t have time to linger over our meal but we will be going back on our next trip to see the kids!
Had to wait too long for the food
Fiancee’s flounder was raw. The homemade pasta had a very strange texture. They only had two servers on a very busy unseasonably warm Saturday night.
The food was not very exciting and lacking expected flavor. The service person acted as if he was running a marathon. It may have been that he seem to be the only service person there. I'm not planning on returning and I would not recommend the restaurant to friends or family.
In our several years of dining at Bistro 18, we have always had an excellent experience. The food is really New York City quality, at New Jersey prices. It's a BYO, and you can even have your choice of "bottle" delivered from the local liquor store, at no extra charge. The service is always very gracious. Although everything we have personally enjoyed at the restaurant has been wonderfully prepared (and presented!), standouts include the risotto, the steak with red wine sauce, and the sesame-crusted salmon. The gazpacho--which was a special the last time we visited--was the best I have ever tasted.
Good quality and great service for a birthday event
There is no alcohol at this restaurant- bring your own or order from the next door wine shop !
The service was great met us with a flower for Mothers Day so started well.
Our server was very polite.
The appetizers were good, Brie and shrimp presented nicely, but our main course flounder with crab meat was dry over cooked and the tuna was cold and extremely rare.
The duck was ok and the lamb chops were far most the best choice.
The apple tart dessert was yummy to finish.
Been here several times before, but it's been over a year, so we decided to make last minute reservation for Mother's Day 3:00 pm. We started with the burrata app and a mozzarella-tomato app. Both were "ok". Without going into detail two of us had the rack of lamb and two of us linguine with seafood (scallops, shrimp; you know the deal). Anyway we all agreed that the food was adequate not poor, but by no means special in any way. For some reason I remember the food being better in the past..
Bistro 18 is a great place to meet and eat. The Organic meats and Wilde caught Fish are one of the most attractive things to me. The Staff is friendly and they take care of you very nicely.
Very nice casual restaurant in Montclair NJ. Food was good, it's BYOB so that makes it very good value. We will go there again for sure.
Great food! I came across this restaurant by accident and ended up having a great lunch!! I had the salmon wrap which was cooked perfectly with the right amount of everything. Will definitely be back here for a visit!
The flourless chocolate cake is fantastic! The salads and wraps were also very good. Next time we’re traveling trough the area, we will go back.
Rainy Sunday. Arrived early. They were gracious enough to seat us. We spent 2.5 hrs there. Good food and very nice service/ambience.
Service was very good, as was overall food, but I ordered the a Big Eye Tuna, rare as recommended, and what I got was definitely at least medium.
Excellent service, lovely ambiance and incredibly tasty food.
We were there for our anniversary. Food were good and the waiter was very friendly and attentive. We will be back soon.
Food was good but the dessert took 30 minutes "being prepared" and it was nothing stellar. Service was good, nice waiter - gave us time but the food was "ok" Strange thing is the reviews where good to great. Place was half empty.
Great spot - got a quiet table - great food fair price - should have been packed but glad it wasn't
Best meal we have had in Montclair in ages-Chef came out to explain the meal to us-service could not have been better!
The dinner was amazing. Food was prepared fresh and the seating in the atrium was beautiful. The specials were delicious and the alcohol service was a nice touch. From appetizers to dessert, everything was top notch.
Great lunch for our book club meeting. Good service and great food.
Food was excellent as usual. One is never rushed at B18. My dining companion suggested that the Beverage Menu should be offered when no BYOB is present.
Overall it was an ok meal. Service was fine, prices ok, and food was pretty good. Problem is there are so many GREAT restaurants nearby that there was nothing to make this one stand out for me to return.
One of the best appetizers (lobster/crab quesadilla) and entrees (potato-crusted snapper) that I've ever had!
