Excellent rack of lamb and huge desertd
Waiter made three errors serving appetizers to party of four. Two parties' appetizers were switched, and a third party was given the wrong (non vegetable)'spring rolls.
Watermelon salad had a large number of unripe pieces, with no follow-up by stafd
One party's napkin was improperly moved and could not be located
All management did by way of compensation was to call one $9 dessert on the house.
We will not return there
Food was great, but restaurant seemed under staffed as it took way to long for our food to come.
We have eaten here several times. The food was good but the vegetables were not warm. When we told the waiter, he made no attempt to rectify this. We came here for the convenience of meeting friends and may have to rethink coming here again.
We had a wonderful meal. We decided to sit in the atrium with full windows on the street. The space was a bit noisy upon arrival, but as the evening wore on the noise level subsided. My friend had the rack of lamb. It was perfectly prepared with a beautiful presentation. I had the sesame crusted tuna. Again perfectly prepared. We ordered the mushroom risotto for an appetizer. It was very tasty but they did not use risotto but a standard rice. I would highly recommend!
Fantastic food! Especially the seafood dishes!
Ladies night out - food was inventive and delicious, and the service was excellent. Poached pear salad with walnuts and goat cheese was different than the usual, though the pear might have been ripened another day. Sesame tuna special was great with a quinoa salad under the fish. Healthy and delicious.
This was my second time eating at Bistro 18 and again I was disappointed. The area we dined in smelled strongly of cooking odors which were pretty strong. I always am turned off by poor ventilation. The bread was not particularly tasty and did not pair well with the hummus that was served with it. I ordered the lobster ravioli with orange roughy and was so disappointed to discover that the fish was breaded and fried. The fish was a bit tough and chewy. The ravioli seemed store-bought rather than freshly made but maybe that's the way every restaurant does it. My husband had the seafood linguini and it was fine if not memorable. He didn't find many crab pieces or scallops in it. He also tried the charred bosc pear salad which came right from the refrigerator rather than being freshly made. The service was very good even if the food wasn't.
Excellent service, mediocre ambiance, respectable food.
Date night for my husband and I. We arrived early, at 5:30, and were seated immediately. Very attentive service overall and they kept the service paced well. The ambiance is a bit odd - the exterior "porch" is actually a glassed in enclosure with business storefront. The adjacent dining rooms were a bit sparse and dark vs. moody. Food was respectable - my husband had the salmon, it was excellent. I had a steak, it was a bit fatty, but well prepared. The overall experience was not memorable enough to drive me back again.
Food is mediocre. From reading the menu you expect more. Nothing tasted interesting or satisfying.
Soon as I walked in I already felt that I encounter a great restaurant. The staff was very courteous, handling us with proper service in a mindful manner. They had 3 separate rooms for seating depending on your occasion. I was dealing with a friendly special occasion which seating wasn’t a big deal as long as we were able to chit-chat we enjoyed the night. The food was delicious just as expected , served warm and fresh .
Next time I need to step out and catch a meal with somebody Bistro 18 will be one of my go to spots ..
We had a Mother’s Day dinner at Bistro 18. We were seated promptly and they offered to open our wine immediately. The escargot was very good, the shrimp/shiitake appetizer was good.
Unfortunately, they were out of the hanger steaks so we could not get that. We did get the NY sirloin special, but it was not the
best (arrived on the medium side of medium rare when we both ordered rare and the meat was plated on top of the fries making them inaccessible and then soggy).
My sister enjoyed the duck and my niece enjoyed the seafood linguini (it was just the right amount of spicy). Most applauded were the sesame salmon and the potato crusted snapper, we recommend those highly. I wish I could have tried the risotto and pappardelle and hope to come back and try them.
The seating after the shops close is quite neat, as you sit inside the glass storefront, but outside several shops. Apparently, when the shops close, more tables are available for bistro18. It makes a long walk for waiters, but it puts each table single file for a very quiet and private feeling. Sometime shop owners did go through, but it was not instructive. Overall, we would definitely come again as the service, food, quiet, and price made for a very enjoyable evening. Thank you!
Food not hot when served, duck over cooked and returned , no flavor on veggies served
Great local BYOB place. I’ve been here numerous times and have never been disappointed. Good food and service. Highly recommend
There are so many good restaurants in Montclair, but sadly this is not one of them. Food was mediocre and poorly executed. Tuna tartar was tasteless but the worst offense was that the seafood pasta tasted like it was prepared with jarred sauce. Will not return.
The service was sub par. Waiter seemed to have trouble processing what was said. Had to repeat our requests several times. Two of us out of four did not like our dishes . Duck breast was undercooked and had to be sent back, pasta with seafood was bland. Had to call waiter over several times . Coffee was served lukewarm. — not once but second time also. Dessert never appeared until we told manager who did bring it out and didn’t charge us. Our friends whom we brought said they would never return .
Five of us dined here on a Sat. night. I was a little concerned/happy because we were able to get a reservation when all else was booked in Mtc. However, I really don't understand why it wouldn't have been booked up!
The food was very good. Our entrees ranged from two different tuna options, rack of lamb, and snapper. Everyone said their dish was excellent. I had the snapper, which was potato encrusted and very moist. Served over a bed of spinach with mushrooms and garlic. Excellent! ( Snapper is sometimes a thin fillet, and can be dry - this was a thicker piece and well prepared) One tuna was served Asian style with bok choy and noodles, the other was a sesame encrusted tuna over mashed potatoes. Lamb chops were cooked as ordered and very good. Everyone either completely finished their entree or took home what was left. Portions were generous. Service wasn't fast, but not overly slow. None of us had dessert, but salads were good - a good size without being so big you cannot enjoy your entree.
I guess the only thing missing here is ambiance. We sat in the outside, glass enclosed section. Pleasant, but we were looking into the lit up storefront of a dress shop. It would be nicer if they could get the stores to turn off their lights inside! It was raining outside, but it was comfortable, temperature wise, and you couldn't hear the rain. So no complaints on that front.
We dine a lot in Mtc. and while this wouldn't be a top restaurant there, it was quite good and worth returning. Prices were average for Montclair. We were not rushed, despite the fact that the place was full when we left.
Food is always good. Service is good and everyone is friendly and helpful.
Good, not great. Duck breast over cooked. Osso bucco very good but pasta over cooked. Lamb very good. Quesadilla excellent.
Enjoyed a long late lunch with a large group. A couple people arrived late, and we lingered for some time, but we never felt rushed. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Food was very good. Reasonably priced. We'll be back.
The glass enclosed outer dining area was lovely. We shared a delicious charred pear salad, which was just right for two. Our salmon was cooked to perfection, and our waiter was the ideal balance of attentiveness and graciousness.
First time here. Sat in the glassed-in area in the front of the restaurant and watched the many people out and about on a lovely Saturday evening in Montclair. Had the Chicken Gumbo soup special, very fresh and flavorful. Homemade pasta with seafood in a spicy red sauce was excellent, as was my husband's fish dish. Managed to save room to share the flourless chocolate cake with fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream. Could have licked the plate!
Great place ! Will definitely return with friends
Party of 9 celebrated Easter there. Lunchtime, but used the dinner menu because it was Easter. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent!!
A shame they were empty. Very much worth the visit. Enjoyable staff nice food and comfy. Well worth it. My girlfriend loves to chat so they were more than happy to indulge it was great. Happy birthday to her ^.^
What a terrible experience. Granted, it was a very loud and crowded evening. The wait staff could not keep up with the service. Once we got our food, one and a half hours late, it was bland and tasted like we were on a cruise ship.
Not our best experience at Bistro 18. Food and especially the service were not what we experienced in the past there. Had to ask twice for both butter and pepper for example. Might have been because of where they seated us, in a far, far, away corner of the restaurant.
They need better hands on management! Servers are always the same, usually quite efficient but not very friendly/personable, but host/hostess/mgm't different every time there. Where is the owner????
The six of us had a great time and great food at Bistro 18. Saturday night we sat on the porch. I only have one problem with it.... it was soooo noisy.
We all loved our food and we had excellent service but we were screaming by 7:30. We went at 6:15 and it was so nice until it filled in with people. Go on a weekday. It’s not so loud. 😊
Consistently excellent food and service! Potato-crusted red snapper a must!
Some of our group was happy with their experience and some were not as happy with their food selections.
Very nice experience
Good food and service
We will be back
Food was good not spectacular. Service was okay. Room very noisy. Practical prices. Best was appetizer- seafood enchilada, and mussels. Steak and red snapper was good but not very tasty. BYOB.
First time here. Food was excellent. Service and staff friendly and attentive. Will be going baxk
Bistro 18 was a very nice place to meet up with our small group (6) of friends for a date night away from our kiddos. Reservation was obviously easy through OpenTable, and we were seated immediately, which isn't always the case even with a reservation. Service was good, waiter had a great wit and cracked a few jokes while we were being indecisive, nice to have someone like that! Food was good, while a bit unspectacular, but everything was prepared as ordered, and deserts were excellent. Would certainly go there again.
Loved the selection. Everything was great. Can’t wait to go back
A snowy night and an 8:45pm post-movie reservation. Overall food was prepared well. The escargot fra diablo could have been hotter (temperature; the spice was spot on), so I was concerned for future dishes. The pumpkin squash ravioli was perfectly portioned and caramelized walnuts a perfect complement. Hanger steak entree adequate, and seafood medley perfect and well presented. For a slow night due to weather, i think the staff was anxious to leave, but ambience and overall experience pleasant
awesome as always! Bistro 18 has become a staple for us!
It was our first time here and overall we enjoyed the evening and the food was very good. The atmosphere was just OK, and we ended up with an acceptable table after I rejected the first two--one right by the door on a very cold night; the second right outside the bathroom bathed in fluorescents, despite the fact the the restaurant was practically empty. The waiter was efficient but not overly friendly, which was OK, but didn't enhance the experience at all. Overall, a good meal for an everyday night.
Fish meals are usually the best. We sat at the window seating which we always find a pleasing experience. Service was attentive and easy going. We’ve been there several times. It’s our go to place when we want a reasonable seafood dinner while enjoying a nice bottle of wine. The restaurant is BYOB.
Food was fabulous, but we had to keep searching for the waiter.
