Had a wonderful time for my birthday with a group of friends - delicious food, nice ambience, great service, and a fantastic show of flamenco dancing and music the night of our dinner!
food has completely changed :( i used to love this place but the food has completely changed, even the portions and serving style has switched to tiny, artistic french like dishes.
we were all starving even after eating and it cost an arm and a leg. the dishes were all dry and not the same at all.
the ambiance was changed as well- obnoxious multicolored disco ball light in the front right where the dining is.
at least the servers were very nice.
The restaurant has an awesome vibe and all of the servers were so polite and friendly. The food is delicious. I think this would be a great place to try some African food for the first time.
Came here off of a recommendation and it exceeded expectations. The food was delicious, the drinks were tasty, and the music kept us dancing in our seats. There seem to be a lot of late night events, so I'll have to return to check them out.
chicken was iffy
I came here with a party of 12 for my birthday over the weekend. I've been to the restaurant on multiple occasions, but only for the events at night. I was surprised that it wasn't too crowded at 5:30pm on a Saturday. All of my guests enjoyed the food and absolutely loved the cocktails, especially the Little Baobab, and the happy hour prices. The portions were a bit small, but the quality of the food overall was impressive. The service from the waitress was authentic and friendly, and she was patient even though we had guests that came late. The server seemed a bit unfriendly, but maybe he was just stressed out with us being a large group and some of our guests didn't remember the names of the entrees that they ordered.
happy hour cocktail, appetizer and main for $20, great deal. Food came quickly and was great. The bathroom needs a reno but otherwise it was quirky and fun
Landed here by happy accident. Looking for ethiopian food. Service excellent and attentive. Menu looked very interesting, but being the chicken I am, I stuck to plantains. Dipping sauce was the best part; one of my (former?) friends kept stealing my sauce.
Very attentive and friendly service and good food and adequate dance floor!
Fantastic Valentines Day dinner and drinks with my sweetheart.
The food was great but the service was very slow, especially with kids!
This restaurant did not take the reservation seriously. We showed up on time to be told they had just had a lot of walk ins and they could not accommodate us for 20-30 minutes. The Maitre D seemed to have no concept of what a reservation meant to us as diners who had made a special journey to this restaurant and arrived on time. He told us that Friday and Saturdays were busy and this meant the night we were there (Saturday) was a bad night to make a reservation??? We waited about 45 minutes at the bar and after checking in with him a few times it was clear he really could not reliably tell us when we could eat as it kept being "about 20 minutes". So we left to find another restaurant. We were disappointed as we had specially bought an out of town visitor to try it. The food etc may be good (we'll never know) but I recommend you definitely do not bother with an Opentable reservation as it means nothing at this place.
Don't bother on Flamenco night.
I made a reservation for 7:15. Flamenco performance starts at 7:30. I received a confirmation phone call, day of.
Arrived at 7:15 and the host apologized and said it was at 45 minute wait, standing only, and they'd put us in the far back separate room from the dancing. He pointed at another group he said also made also 7:15 reservation and there were no tables for them either. They were dressed up very fancy, must have been a special night for them.
We left. While we were sitting down at another restaurant, we saw the other group walk by. Guess they never got a table either.
Food, atmosphere, service were top notch. Great location😁, near bart. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I love Bissap Baobab...one of my favorites in SF. I have been coming here for almost 25 years, from one location to the next, and the food just keeps getting better. It is my favorite restaurant to take out of town guests for something a bit different; they have all loved it. I have been to Senegal...and when I am at Bissap, I almost feel like I am in Senegal again. I like the atmosphere, the music, the service, the food, and especially the unusual and delicious cocktails. My favorite food items are the red curry shrimp appetizer, yassa or dibi fish and coconut curry with shrimp. My favorite cocktails are Sedem, Manifique, and Tooni (ginger margarita). The happy hour special menu is a great deal: cocktail, appetizer and entree for $20. The SF place turns into a dance club at 10 on Wed, Fri and Sat nights.
The food was wonderful and interesting, the ambiance is great... It is convivial. Pretty much everything you want for casual dinner.
Special thanks to the manager and staff there, who were extremely helpful/accommodating when i left my bag there.... Honest and friendly.
Always an excellent time! Went for a birthday celebration!
Very friendly, African Music...a great place to go dancing!
I wouldn't know how the restaurant is. It was closed when we got there at the appointed time of our OpenTable reservation. The lights were off, doors locked, chairs on the tables, and a motorcycle parked inside.
Well we made a reservation for the 26th and then showed up...and the restaurant was closed. So, yes, we were just a bit unimpressed. Nothing either online or through their phone (and definitely not through Open Table) indicated they would be closed.
Came with my fiancé for a weeknight dinner. We each got the happy hour dinner special: $20 for 1 house cocktail, appetizer, and entree. Our food was delicious, perfect proportions, and good service. Most of the building is a bar/ dance floor. There is a sit down area with tables and great ambiance.
First time trying black eyed pea cakes- and I’m hooked. Looking forward to my next meal here.
Would be a great place for a work happy hour.
Brilliant and authentic food and drinks. Servers were polite, helpful and adaptable to our seating arrangements. Hope to stay for the night events/ nightlife next time
We had to wait for our table more than 15 min and then we were not able to order our food because the kitchen closed.
But thanks to the food runner we have some thing to eat. Not excatly what we ordered but still delicious.
The food was great but chairs were hot very comfortable and the menus were sticky.
This is a fun place -- great comfortable atmosphere, really friendly service and creative and unusual food. We were there on a week night so it was quiet. I look forward to returning on a weekend when there is live music.
I moderated a meet up for " black girls on the marina" the ladies loved it. The food was fantastic. I just love this place!
delicious food, attentive staff, great place to enjoy live music
I love this place! The food is excellent, that's coming from a Senegalese :-) the music is great and the service is warm and professional (Teranga - You'll feel welcomed). Enjoy!
I really liked Bissap and Little Baobab in Oakland, so was eager to try the original. Exceeded expectations -- a total gem. The food was really fantastic and the ambiance complements the experience. Service is friendly and very casual -- I got there in a rush, so it took me a little time to settle into the more laid back vibe. Definitely coming back.
Cheerful and friendly authentic Senegalese home cooking in the Mission District. Lots of fun, good cooking, and great prices. Live music many nights of the week.
I've lived in the neighborhood for 18 years, as long as Bissap and Little Baobab has been in this location, and I had never been here! We took my daughter here for her 21st birthday, which happened to also be the owner's 94-year-old mother 's birthday. The ambience couldn't have been warmer and more friendly--everyone from the wait staff to the owner himself came by our table to chat. We even got a piece of the birthday cake. The cocktails and food were delicious.
Nice, charming place with good food, friendly staff and late evening dancing. It has a very lively atmosphere, with an international crowd. Will surely come back!
One of the loveliest evenings I've spent in a restaurant. The staff ambiance and overall experience was lovely.
Great comfort food. We had a large party of 12 for a birthday and the staff was really great and accomodating
I've been coming for decades and it's always a hip fun yummy experience with the love, soul and depth of a well run family business. I've lost count of how many times I've danced and celebrated my birthday there. Hope to do so for decades more.
Bissap Baobab was a uniquely lovely experience. Came here for a vegetarian friend's birthday, and there were many delicious options, and also the options to add meat or seafood. Love the ambiance, hipster and cute. We tried many of the cocktails and they were all delicious! Happy hour prices were a fantastic value. We're coming back next time for the dancing because we've heard it's great here too!
Delicious, interesting food. It was a bit annoying that we were seated at a mini table at knee level with little stools (my boyfriend is 6'4", so this was particularly uncomfortable for him) when there were multiple real-sized tables that were clearly being reserved for larger groups, but remained empty the entire time we were there. Service overall was mediocre at best.
Delicious Senegalese cuisine in a fun, vibrant atmosphere - stay for dancing, great for groups!
Food was outstanding. I started with spinach Pastelles and had the Niebe Thies with chicken. The staff was both helpful and attentive. My experience was amazing, I will be back.
