About Bissap and Little Baobab
Our name is a tribute to the meaningful symbol of life, community, and culture in Africa -- the Baobab tree, Bissap Baobab San Francisco has been an institution in the heart of the vibrant Mission district for almost 20 years.
We bring the savors and succulent flavors of Senegal to your table with traditional Senegalese cuisine and West African-California fusion specialties. Choose from a full range of gourmet African dishes, including avocat creole, tropical salad, yassa, made, and ceebu. Then wash it all down with one of our homemade juices: hibiscus, tamarind, ginger, or our signature cocktails made with our homemade juices: Tatu, Toni, etc.
We offer HAPPY-HOUR Tuesday to Sunday 5:30pm to 7pm and dinner is served from 5:30pm to 10pm. More than just a restaurant, Bissap Baobab Village is a community center, with a laid back, yet distinctly cosmopolitan, worldly vibe which upholds the concept of an African village.

Bissap and Little Baobab Ratings and Reviews
Came with my fiancé for a weeknight dinner. We each got the happy hour dinner special: $20 for 1 house cocktail, appetizer, and entree. Our food was delicious, perfect proportions, and good service. Most of the building is a bar/ dance floor. There is a sit down area with tables and great ambiance.
First time trying black eyed pea cakes- and I’m hooked. Looking forward to my next meal here.
Would be a great place for a work happy hour.
I really liked Bissap and Little Baobab in Oakland, so was eager to try the original. Exceeded expectations -- a total gem. The food was really fantastic and the ambiance complements the experience. Service is friendly and very casual -- I got there in a rush, so it took me a little time to settle into the more laid back vibe. Definitely coming back.
I've lived in the neighborhood for 18 years, as long as Bissap and Little Baobab has been in this location, and I had never been here! We took my daughter here for her 21st birthday, which happened to also be the owner's 94-year-old mother 's birthday. The ambience couldn't have been warmer and more friendly--everyone from the wait staff to the owner himself came by our table to chat. We even got a piece of the birthday cake. The cocktails and food were delicious.
Bissap Baobab was a uniquely lovely experience. Came here for a vegetarian friend's birthday, and there were many delicious options, and also the options to add meat or seafood. Love the ambiance, hipster and cute. We tried many of the cocktails and they were all delicious! Happy hour prices were a fantastic value. We're coming back next time for the dancing because we've heard it's great here too!
Delicious, interesting food. It was a bit annoying that we were seated at a mini table at knee level with little stools (my boyfriend is 6'4", so this was particularly uncomfortable for him) when there were multiple real-sized tables that were clearly being reserved for larger groups, but remained empty the entire time we were there. Service overall was mediocre at best.
Been coming here for 15+ years, for big dinner parties, catered events, small groups, solo, but this is the first time that the food was simply horrible in presentation and temperature. Couscous was room temperature...not even warm. The chicken was so shriveled and dried, as in over cooked. Simply pitiful. We were too hungry to send it back and reorder.
Our server was excellent, prompt, super kind and attentive without being overly attentive or intrusive.
I was shocked at how poor the food was this time.
For two years now, Bissap Baobab has been one of my favorite places, the world over - you really become part of a global family here. This year, I brought my graduate school friends here for our holiday dinner and, as anticipated, it was the perfect venue for our party of 9. Huge, huge thanks to Marco and the Bissap Baobab crew for always hosting me with compassion and joy!
The food was pretty tasty. We ordered the fried plantains as a starter and shared the lamb yassa and the signature shrimp dish. The Yassa was very tasty. We then split the banana foster dessert that was ahhmazing! The service was okay. There was a large party in the restaurant, it was hot and there isn't a lot of circulation. We used the yelp deal.
we actually were turned away bc they flip the dining room to a dance floor at night. i think that you shouldn't be allowed to make an open table res here at this time since it really wasnt realistic to have the reservation. i wasnt too upset, there are tons of other restaurants around so we just went somewhere else. have yet to try the place yet but will come back earlier!
Took 20 friends there for a birthday dinner and the experience was amazing. The process of booking and confirming the reservation was seamless and I had no trouble whatsoever.
During dinner, we got gracious services and all our questions and inquiries were handled well.
Stayed for the party afterwards and had an amazing time. Thanks :-)
totally great! Our family met there with a friend -- everything was great. Very pleasant waiter. Only suggestion -- a little more food per serving. I tend to eat little, and I easily finished off my entire plate...a person with a bigger appetite might need to order two entrees.
The food is delicious, and not really similar to anything else in the city. Closest flavors might be from Persian places. The atmosphere is lively, but a bit loud for conversation. We came out to about $25 a person (some people had drinks). The menu accommodates vegans, and they have interesting drinks for sober folks as well.
They sat us without waiting for the whole group, which was very helpful.
