About Bissap and Little Baobab
Our name is a tribute to the meaningful symbol of life, community, and culture in Africa -- the Baobab tree, Bissap Baobab San Francisco has been an institution in the heart of the vibrant Mission district for almost 20 years.
We bring the savors and succulent flavors of Senegal to your table with traditional Senegalese cuisine and West African-California fusion specialties. Choose from a full range of gourmet African dishes, including avocat creole, tropical salad, yassa, made, and ceebu. Then wash it all down with one of our homemade juices: hibiscus, tamarind, ginger, or our signature cocktails made with our homemade juices: Tatu, Toni, etc.
We offer HAPPY-HOUR Tuesday to Sunday 5:30pm to 7pm and dinner is served from 5:30pm to 10pm. More than just a restaurant, Bissap Baobab Village is a community center, with a laid back, yet distinctly cosmopolitan, worldly vibe which upholds the concept of an African village.

Bissap and Little Baobab Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant did not take the reservation seriously. We showed up on time to be told they had just had a lot of walk ins and they could not accommodate us for 20-30 minutes. The Maitre D seemed to have no concept of what a reservation meant to us as diners who had made a special journey to this restaurant and arrived on time. He told us that Friday and Saturdays were busy and this meant the night we were there (Saturday) was a bad night to make a reservation??? We waited about 45 minutes at the bar and after checking in with him a few times it was clear he really could not reliably tell us when we could eat as it kept being "about 20 minutes". So we left to find another restaurant. We were disappointed as we had specially bought an out of town visitor to try it. The food etc may be good (we'll never know) but I recommend you definitely do not bother with an Opentable reservation as it means nothing at this place.
Don't bother on Flamenco night.
I made a reservation for 7:15. Flamenco performance starts at 7:30. I received a confirmation phone call, day of.
Arrived at 7:15 and the host apologized and said it was at 45 minute wait, standing only, and they'd put us in the far back separate room from the dancing. He pointed at another group he said also made also 7:15 reservation and there were no tables for them either. They were dressed up very fancy, must have been a special night for them.
We left. While we were sitting down at another restaurant, we saw the other group walk by. Guess they never got a table either.
I love Bissap Baobab...one of my favorites in SF. I have been coming here for almost 25 years, from one location to the next, and the food just keeps getting better. It is my favorite restaurant to take out of town guests for something a bit different; they have all loved it. I have been to Senegal...and when I am at Bissap, I almost feel like I am in Senegal again. I like the atmosphere, the music, the service, the food, and especially the unusual and delicious cocktails. My favorite food items are the red curry shrimp appetizer, yassa or dibi fish and coconut curry with shrimp. My favorite cocktails are Sedem, Manifique, and Tooni (ginger margarita). The happy hour special menu is a great deal: cocktail, appetizer and entree for $20. The SF place turns into a dance club at 10 on Wed, Fri and Sat nights.
The food was wonderful and interesting, the ambiance is great... It is convivial. Pretty much everything you want for casual dinner.
Special thanks to the manager and staff there, who were extremely helpful/accommodating when i left my bag there.... Honest and friendly.
Came with my fiancé for a weeknight dinner. We each got the happy hour dinner special: $20 for 1 house cocktail, appetizer, and entree. Our food was delicious, perfect proportions, and good service. Most of the building is a bar/ dance floor. There is a sit down area with tables and great ambiance.
First time trying black eyed pea cakes- and I’m hooked. Looking forward to my next meal here.
Would be a great place for a work happy hour.
I really liked Bissap and Little Baobab in Oakland, so was eager to try the original. Exceeded expectations -- a total gem. The food was really fantastic and the ambiance complements the experience. Service is friendly and very casual -- I got there in a rush, so it took me a little time to settle into the more laid back vibe. Definitely coming back.
I've lived in the neighborhood for 18 years, as long as Bissap and Little Baobab has been in this location, and I had never been here! We took my daughter here for her 21st birthday, which happened to also be the owner's 94-year-old mother 's birthday. The ambience couldn't have been warmer and more friendly--everyone from the wait staff to the owner himself came by our table to chat. We even got a piece of the birthday cake. The cocktails and food were delicious.
Bissap Baobab was a uniquely lovely experience. Came here for a vegetarian friend's birthday, and there were many delicious options, and also the options to add meat or seafood. Love the ambiance, hipster and cute. We tried many of the cocktails and they were all delicious! Happy hour prices were a fantastic value. We're coming back next time for the dancing because we've heard it's great here too!
Delicious, interesting food. It was a bit annoying that we were seated at a mini table at knee level with little stools (my boyfriend is 6'4", so this was particularly uncomfortable for him) when there were multiple real-sized tables that were clearly being reserved for larger groups, but remained empty the entire time we were there. Service overall was mediocre at best.
Been coming here for 15+ years, for big dinner parties, catered events, small groups, solo, but this is the first time that the food was simply horrible in presentation and temperature. Couscous was room temperature...not even warm. The chicken was so shriveled and dried, as in over cooked. Simply pitiful. We were too hungry to send it back and reorder.
Our server was excellent, prompt, super kind and attentive without being overly attentive or intrusive.
I was shocked at how poor the food was this time.
For two years now, Bissap Baobab has been one of my favorite places, the world over - you really become part of a global family here. This year, I brought my graduate school friends here for our holiday dinner and, as anticipated, it was the perfect venue for our party of 9. Huge, huge thanks to Marco and the Bissap Baobab crew for always hosting me with compassion and joy!
The food was pretty tasty. We ordered the fried plantains as a starter and shared the lamb yassa and the signature shrimp dish. The Yassa was very tasty. We then split the banana foster dessert that was ahhmazing! The service was okay. There was a large party in the restaurant, it was hot and there isn't a lot of circulation. We used the yelp deal.
