I was very disappointed in this place. The ambience was horrible and the service was even worse. Only one server taking care of half of the restaurant. Lastly, when we received the check they added a $50 service charge/tip for a party of 7. This was supposed to be an Easter Brunch for $39.95 per person. Surprised when the check totaled $361. Please note we ordered no alcohol only 2 ice teas, coffee and water.
I was there for Easter Brunch along with my son and my granddaughter. Everything started off on the right note with the waitress describing the buffet to us since it was our first time there. After taking our drink order the waitress said we could start on the buffet so off we went....and unfortunately she did too. When we came back to the table our drinks were there, we never saw the waitress again, actually we never saw anybody approach the table to see if everything was ok. After piling up our finished plates, a busser would swing by and grab the plates quickly never saying a word even after we'd say "thank you". Our water glasses were empty, never got a refill. We all wanted a second drink, including my granddaughter
(She was having oj) but again, nobody approached the table. We didn't have silverware to enjoy our dessert. We left it untouched at the table. At that point I was already upset, disappointed. I just wanted to pay and leave. I had to flag a man with a suit who helped us at the front desk when we arrived. Luckily for me he was sitting a party at a table nearby. When I asked him if I had to pay at the front desk he replied not very courteous.." you pay your waitress". Soon another server (male) brought the check , I left 10 % tip and got out of there. Seriously, at one point I wasn't going to leave anything. The price of the buffet was for the food then you leave gratuity for the service given. My table was forgotten and that might be the reason why my waitress didn't bring the check herself. She sent another person with the check. The food was good but after having a "no service experience" I left there with a sour taste in my mouth. I don't recommend this place and I'm never coming again. I regret having chosen this place over other places offering the easter brunch buffet in the area.
Birch River Grill – An American Kitchen was a pleasant surprise. I saw its Easter Brunch listed in the Daily Herald and we decided to try it for Saturday dinner.
The food was excellent. My Wife and I both had the apple flavored French onion soup. It was very good with the apple making the sweeter than normal.
I has a flank steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. It very good.
My Wife had a salmon which she liked very much.
The price was reasonable. We each had a drink, soup and an entree and the price prior to tip was $80.
Available entrees included short ribs and barbecue ribs.
It was not very crowed. It is attached to a Hilton Garden Inn. I hope more people go there so it can stay open. It is a very nice restaurant.
Food was absolutely delicious. The restaurant was not crowded at all. Large party going on in the other room.
Server was very nice & helpful. We will probably come back for Mother's Day brunch even though we do not live that close.
Birch River Grill was excellent! We were so impressed with the food that we've already been back! The staff was courteous and kind to all of us, even my kids. They even went so far as to split the dessert for us so it was easier to share. We highly recommend and will be back!
Just ok... however Open Table allowed for making a 4:30 reservation however it’s cllsed from 3 to 5. Bar is not even open. We had to sit in the lobby.
Celebrating one of my daughters birthday .
Server was great. Good proportion to cost , so-so. Had appetizers during happy hour & that was added value.
Quit place for conversation and good food. Great Chilli, Asian Salad ,Lamb Chops etc.
Had a group of 6 and was not told that there would be an automatic gratuity. Because it was Christmas we gave a very generous tip in cash to our waitress. Between the automatic tip and what we gave her in amounted to approximately 40% of bill. She never said anything. And we did not leave restaurant right away so she had plenty of time. So disappointing - especially because if she would have been honest and told us I would have told her to keep it. Sent an email to general manager and never received a response.
Went for Christmas dinner and food was outstanding. I like the quiet atmosphere.
Went for Thanksgiving ealy dinner. Food was tasty, servers were nice and good and the atmosphere was friendly. I would recommend it.
This is an absolutely fabulous restaurant! The ONLY caveat is you would want to go on Friday or Saturday because it is part of a Doubletree hotel. During the week, when we went there, it was quite busy. Friday and Saturday, it is usually very laided back and quiet. Food is fabulous, service is always good.
Worst Easter Brunch EVER! Food was burnt, or has been sitting out too long. Way over priced. Kinda ruined my holiday.
We were at Birch River Grill for Easter Brunch. This is our second year doing so. The first year was great. This year, not as nice. Coffee was old and cold. Even asked for another cup and the wait person never brought it. Smoked fish was not replenished the entire two hours we were there. All in all, just ok.
Did not expect a lot and the place was fairly empty but the food was great and the server was awesome.
Very bland tasting food. Wine selection very poor. Waiters and busboys were nice but dressed in jeans land looked like they were just stopping by for a few minutes to help out. The management is not interested in making this a successful restaurant. Never again and will tell my friends to stay away
Memorable service and not too noisy
This quaint place in the Hilton is hidden gem. Had the lamb chops and they were amazing. Service at the bar and the table excellent. Quiet on the weekends.....
My children and I enjoy the brunch buffet. Much variety, delicious food. Coffee was not great, but service was decent. Omelette station was a favorite, and desserts were fabulous!
We've eaten at Birch River Grill (BRG) before and always enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, good food, and attentive service. This latest visit did not disappoint. So many places these days are so noisy that you cannot hear what others are saying. Not true at BRG. The service is attentive and never rushed. This visit we had six in our group, and all enjoyed their entrees. We were able to converse and get caught up with the latest news from everyone without shouting or straining our ears. For a place with good food, great service and quiet atmosphere, this is the place to go.
This is my second time going to Birch River Grille for Easter brunch and each time the service and the food was exceptional. I will definitely come back again for special occasions. The price is a little high considering that you probably won't have a lot of what is being offered; however, the selection is good and something for every pallet.
We have very mixed feelings about thus place. We went on new years eve, the restaurant was not full but had many diners there. The chili was wonderful once they got it hot - it was served cold and the kitchen said it was cold because of the sour cream and cheese they put on it. Not likely unless those were frozen when applied with an ice cube bath added too. The Caesar salad was very good. Cedar salmon was excellent. All the veggies they served were cooked perfectly. But the short ribs were tough and stringy, like an overcooked dried out pot roast. Service was just OK, they assigned the staff to random tables around the room so getting your server's attention was impossible until they decided to come by.
Our go-to place when we are looking for a good dinner in a quiet place where we can hold a conversation and enjoy the people we are dining with.
It was pretty empty (a Monday night), but the food was great, menu nice options, and good service.
Both the service staff and the ambiance were good. The noise level was such that the people in our party could converse. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre and without much in the way of flavor. Therefore, I could not recommend the restaurant.
We had a very nice dining experience. It was pleasant being served at our table instead of having to serve ourselves as often happens with holiday meals. The food was very good and the service excellent.
Great food, great service. Quiet atmosphere. Very enjoyable.
On Sat night at 8pm we were the only patrons there! The food was mediocre, margaritas from the grocery store bottle. Not going to return, ever.
Had a nice dinner at the Birch Gril on a Saturday night, very private, only three tables occupied in the restuarant. Perhaps Satuday night at the Doubletree is not high on anyones list, but the food was solidly good. The flat iron steak was tender with a wonderful sauce, the fish flaky and flavorful. Firecracker shrimp as a starter had a nice zing. The only miss was the pasta dish with veggies. Not alot of creativity, not alot of flavor. Needed alot of garlic to help it along! Very pleasant waitstaff.
I feel if Birch River Grill could attract a crowd then the would have a chance to become a good neighborhood/destination restaurant. The options on the menu appeal to many types of diners and I loved that they had grass fed meats on the menu. However, both our entrees were covered in sauces that did not compliment the rest of the plate. I question whether the sauces are necessary because of trying to mask ingredient quality or freshness.
I have a feeling that if Birch River were able to fill up and turn tables every night then I'd see fresher ingredients that could stand on their own. I will probably not be back, but I do hope they can succeed as I do like the concept a lot.
We have been to Birch River Grill several times. We choose it for the food and service, which are excellent.. But mostly we like the quiet atmosphere that lets our group carry on a conversation without shouting. On this particular visit, our waitress was very attentive, and each of the four of us enjoyed our choice of meal. We ate and sat and talked for a couple of hours, never feeling rushed. We will be back.
A good find from Open Table search. It was a surprise in the menu options and nicely stocked bar. We were able to visit with friends most of the evening until a large crowd arrived - then it got noisy.
we had no problem getting a table on Friday night, which made me a little nervous. Immediately upon walking in, the smell was delicious--a good sign. A private party was going on, but otherwise the restaurant had few customers. We were seated at a table where water had made the laminate start to pull up, giving a bad impression. A tablecloth would make all the difference, especially as we noticed the prices were around $15-30 per dinner entree. Other than the party, it was very quiet. A little bit of ambient noise would be nice, perhaps a water feature instead of music, fitting in with the river theme. We ordered a beet salad, fish tacos, flat iron steak & nut-encrusted pike. Everything was exceptional. Far exceeded our expectations. The next day we were still talking about how great the food was. We'll absolutely return, although I do wish the restaurant offered a bit more ambience.
Had a group of 9 for Mother's Day brunch and it was great! The food was amazing in quality and quantity. No matter who you bring, they will find something they like. It was a little pricey at $38 per person, but I'm fine paying a little more for a good meal. The only disappointment was that the mimosa's and bloody Mary's were extra. For $38, maybe one drink should be included? Bottom line, I would go back for sure.
Staff went out of their way to accomodate guests at the lunch time rush. My waiter was terrific and they seemed to all work together to serve everyone.. I was helped by several staff..it was a nice thing to see. I was at a conference being held at the hotel and glad I chose to eat lunch here! Food was also outstanding.
We stroll into this restaurant, we were actually well received by the staff, they were friendly and attentive all the time.
"Jose" was very helpfull... :)
met 4 of my lady friends for dinner as it was equidistant for all of us. It is connected to a Double Tree so it appeared the majority of patrons were hotel guests. Food is good, service is excellent and it offers a comfortable experience at decent prices. The menu was varied and we all ordered something different. They have something for everyone--we will be back!
Great place to have business lunch. The place is quiet , you can hear the conversations at the table without difficulty. The staff are really good and the food is great
Took my girlfriend here for dinner after driving by there a few times, we like trying new places. We had no wait on anything there, very prompt. At 8pm, only two tables in the whole restaurant had patrons, that's all....I wonder why they were so empty?
My wife and I truly enjoyed our Christmas evening outing to the Birch River Grill at the Arlington Heights Hilton Hotel. The restaurant has a kind of hunting lodge feel to it in the midst of this busy suburb and the fireplace as well as cozy bar add to the friendly and rustic atmosphere. The prime rib we enjoyed was outstanding and the accompanying sides very tastefully prepared. The desert list was a little sparse but what we ordered was simply delicious a choice of either a very rich cheesecake with chocolate topping or a triple layered whipped cream parfait. What I especially appreciated was the friendly wait staff who while not falling all over to please offered gentile first rate service. Of course, as is invariably the case the servers (who were most excellent, polite, helpful and talkative) were all of ethnic origin while the clientele was almost white or able to afford this moderately expensive venue. This represents a dilemma in many traditional restaurant settings around the country but I would have liked to have observed at least one non-ethnic person sacrifice his or her Christmas eve to also serve the public in the kind manner these folks did. Jesus, who was born in a manger amongst the animals to a very poor family in Bethlehem said "It is more blessed to give than to receive..." would have been there at the BRG helping out washing dishes or some such menial task.
I want to thank all the good folks at the Birch River Grill who served my wife and I as we have no family in this area for their kindness and hospitality. All of our needs were attended to in a very friendly and helpful manner and I would recommend this cozy out of the way locale to anyone who wants to spend an intimate evening with friends and family in a spacious and restful environment for either lunch or dinner. We will most certainly return to the BRG the very next time we are looking for a peaceful evening of pleasant dining and fine ambiance. Thanks much.
