Food and service was fabulous. Our waiter was very conscientious of us needing to be out to go to a show & we ordered food that was easily prepared to be out in plenty of time. But the professionalism of the valet service was lacking to say the least. Busy or not - at both car drop & pick up they were rude as if we were bothering them.
We have eaten at Birch And Vine several times and have had a wonderful experience. There was an obvious problem tonight. It took an hour to get our salads and the other courses were just as slow. The food was cold and not prepared well. I question if the kitchen was short handed. I’m not sure if I will give it another try.
It was a great experience and good time. Food and table service was 100%, but Bar tender could have been a bit more friendier by not stating from the start when asked that although they had 5 wines as Cabernet to taste he wouldn’t allow us 5 tasting. If I’m going to buy a bottle I should be allowed to taste them all if they have them. He set a bad tone, but our server made me forget his statements with her extraordinary service and attention.
Diappointing Thanksgiving meal. Dry meat, lumpy and floury gravy, very dry and bland dressing. Completely forgetable meal.

We went to Birch & Vine for Thanksgiving and it came highly recommended. To start, we were greeted by a host desk that told us our 6:30 table would be ready “in about 30-35 minutes”. It seemed as though they were just not ready for holiday service. We understand that you cannot force people to leave, but pushing reservations off by over 30 min is bad planning, particularly when you are serving a limited menu. The potato and leek soup was butternut squash bisque — excellent, but not what was on the prix fixe menu. The turkey was ok. I like dark meat and requested a mix of dark and white. The white meat was juicy but the dark meat was shredded and dry. The gravy was white — did not look like turkey gravy — and the whole dish was very salty. Also, the gravy was overly spicy. All in all, rather disappointing.
Turkey was mediocre at best (was not whole bird), after a wait I caught a straw boss? And asked for more gravey. Many bosses, but little gravey. After our meal was served I asked one of the bosses why we had butter knives but no bread and we then got bread. All in all ($32 for turkey) the meal was not worth it!! I have eaten there before and this was close to several dozen times we have have been to the Birchwood. They tried too hard in all the wrong places.
Higher end setting and plates. We had a nice time with great company. Our server was attentive but not overly so. We felt comfortable taking our time with the meal. We did miss some items no longer on the menu.. skipped desert because of this.. Still a solid spot if you want to impress your company.
My wife and I stayed for an anniversary weekend at The Birchwood, an amazing hotel that Chuck Prather has created that was an experience in and of itself (special thanks to Brandon at the front desk). We love the Canopy rooftop bar (and have enjoyed moon-rise cocktails there many times in the past) but this was our first experience at the hotel and restaurant. The apps and main dishes were all creative and well executed (I had the Pumpkin Sword Fish special...outstanding) and the wine list is expansive and impressive. The service was spot on...attentive but never intrusive. We also enjoyed Sunday Brunch the following morning (the short rib Benedict is fantastic). We are truly looking forward to our next visit to this wonderful place.
We decided to try Birch & Vine again after a disappointing meal when it opened. It is walking distance for each of the three couples, a big plus on a Saturday night. We weren't seated until 45 minutes after our reservation. We weren't seen by a server for another 15 minutes. Drink orders weren't taken for another 15 minutes and the promise of bread was fulfilled 15 minutes later. My martini was perfect. Bread was piping hot and good. I ordered the fritto misto, but contrary to the menu description, was all calamari. I ordered the lamb chops and they were 90 percent fat. I picked out the meat and was done. The sides were mysteries, shredded meat and a carb of some sort. I told the server about the chops and about 20 minutes later a new plate of them was being offered. At that point I was done and declined the offer. The wine we ordered was terrific and fairly priced. We received a complimentary amuse bouche and cookies.
Overall, I think Birch & Vine is well-intentioned but is short on execution. They don't have enough servers and the chef should never have let those chops be cooked let alone leave the kitchen. The food was just okay, not good, and the prices aren't justified. But, it's location, location, location and sitting on Beach Drive on a Saturday night drinking a great martini and great wine and great bread is divine. Drinks and apps, anyone?
Birch and Vine was in the past a favorite restaurant. What has happened? Our entrees were absolutely terrible: fatty rack of lamb and an absolutely obnoxious tomahawk pork chop. By the way, it was a Wednesday night and we were the only dinners in the restaurant...telling. Service was fine, we felt so sorry for the waiter.
I have gone to Happy Hour here a couple of times and like it because the noise level allows conversation at the bar. My dining experience was wonderful. We were seated right away and food was delicious. Everyone at our table had a different dish and everyone loved what they ordered. It got a little noisy later in the evening, but that just enhanced the ambiance as a happening place.
I wish I could say that the food was amazing because we loved everything else about this restaurant and the Birchwood hotel. The ambiance was lovely, the service was impeccable. The food was just okay. All three courses left a lot to be desired. Not bad enough to send back but just not the wonderful food we would have loved to have. We will definitely try them again and see how it goes. We WANT to like them!
My dinner was tasteless and not presented very well. When the manager came over and I told him it was not very good, his response was, "well we are taking the item off the menu next month!" He did ask if I wanted something else, which I refused but never ask to remove it from the bill. I had only taken a few bites. I will not return again, plenty of other better restaurants along Beach Drive!
The meal was less than expected due to a combination of poor service and lack luster food. First the waiter could not get the cork out of a bottle of wine and ended up breaking it off in the bottle - so a new bottle was retrieved unfortunately it had not been properly chilled - warm wine - yuk. Next our entrees arrived without the ordered grilled chicken so 2 were sent back to the kitchen - then the waiter returned with them 10 minutes later there was no dressing on the side as ordered. The children was tougher than an old boot. The waiter never returned to check on us, so we ended up eating the salad without any dressing. Not good. Finally, we were celebrating a birthday - which we had discussed several times with the waiter - when he brought the "birthday" dessert the candle was in the wrong dessert and presented to the wrong person. Just to cap the lunch off, the glass bowl that the birthday dessert was presented in had a huge crack in it. In fairness, the restaurant did comp our desserts but definitely would not return. Very disappointed in this highly recommended restaurant.
We had another excellent Tuesday night dinner sitting outside, in the rain (but not getting wet) last night. Our server, Dean, was excellent, getting wet himself to bring us our wine to sip as we watched a sudden summer storm.
We have never been disappointed with Birch and Vine--even though I long for both the fois gras and the butter-poached lobster appetizers back on the appetizer menu. But last night we tried new appetizers (it was Tuesday night, after all), including the crab cakes, which were delicious (and this is from a person from Baltimore, who knows her crab cakes and thought the only folks who could do crab cakes right in St. Petersburg were Maryland natives Barry and Kelly at The Brass Monkey and Harold at Backfin Blue Cafe). Now I can add Birch and Vine for a lovely upscale (and generous) serving of crab cakes sitting atop lovely avocado and creamed corn sauces. And yes, foodies, the creamed corn works.
Thanks (again) to our server Dean for recommending our excellent (and moderately priced) California Pinot Noir. Dean told us that all the servers had tasted it and rated it the highest of all they tasted. And that is what was so inviting about Dean's service: he gave us good reasons for ordering what we did and did not seem disturbed that all we ordered were appetizers (half price . . . along with the half-price wine of course). In fact, he encouraged us in our ordering, saying "of course" the appetizers were what we should order on a Tuesday night. And "of course" he was right.
Kudos to the owner as well who supports the philanthropic community. We particularly thank him for supporting the PARC Top Chef event, which we attended: a wonderful night that showcased Birch and Vine and supported such an important non-profit.
THis was a very pleasant surprise as it was my first time there.
The service was attentive but not intrusive. The food was quite
good and the menu fairly complete. We have a nice glass of
Puilly Fusse chardonay, and a fairly good wine list.
OVerall, a very solid recommendation.
I eat out every meal as this had to be one of the worst overall experience I have had. A terrible server and food was just as bad. I had snapper and it was very smelly and so dry I could not eat it. The crab cake was good but everything else was not worth the high price items.
This was our first time here and were sadly disappointed by the robots that run this restaurant. When we checked in this our reservation they didn't have our table ready so we checked back 2 other times and they looked at us as if they had never seen us before- absolutely no customer service or personal touch. We finally got our table and our waitress wasn't any better- no personality and no attempt to do more than the bare minimum required by her job description. The pork chop that was recommended was fried and could have been something served at a low level diner. It was so noisy in the dinning room that my husband and I couldn't hardly hear each other, which isn't a great environment for a date.
The beer was good and cold, which was the only positive. I have no plans to return to Birch and Vine.
I can't say enough great things about Birch and Vine. Its the best restaurant in St. Pete! We dined here for my husband's birthday but not the first time we've been here. First, the menu is creative but not unusual. I'd like to kidnap Chef Anthony and take him home with us. Every dish was out of this world amazing. We decided to get several smaller plates instead of an entree but I'm looking forward to going back to try the entrees because they looked so good. We had the fried olives, wagyu beef carpaccio, mushroom soup and 2 salads. It was just enough food. The wagyu carpaccio was so good that I've thought about it every day since I had it. Who does that? It was truly "to die for" - melt in your mouth and the flavors were perfectly matched. My husband wanted to lick the bowl of the olives and the soup - omg. Mushroom soup is my favorite and theirs is awesome! It was only a tad too salty but the rich mushroom flavor was so good that it overpowered the saltiness. I would still get it again. The salads spoiled us for any salad elsewhere. They were absolutely delicious! Oh and he had a hibiscus beer that was so refreshing. Now, as if the food wasn't enough to bring us back, the service - unmatched. There's great service with stuffiness and there's great service with personality. I'll take the latter all day long. For example, we ate at another upscale place a few days prior and while the service is spot-on, the personalities leave a lot to be desired. Here, we had Brandon and loved him so much we recommended that our friends, who were dining the following day, ask for him. He's not only very knowledgable about the menu and food in general but he's attentive with a super personality. He's the type of waiter I love - someone I can relate to and who feels more like a friend. He seems to have a passion for food and is just such a nice guy! He's a large part of the reason we'll be back!
