Came in as a party of 2 and was very pleasantly surprised that we were able to order 2 different tasting menus (since my date was a vegetarian and I certainly am not). Chef Jarrad Silver has created an amazing offering with the Beast Menu featuring goat 3 ways and the vegetarian menu was also bright and flavorful. Such a great value and the beer pairings were a fun touch. One of the best meals I had in a while with fun flavors while still serving classic and approachable dishes. Thank you Chef!
My husband and I chose Birch and Barley for a brunch with some friends who were in town from NYC. We had a great time catching up in their open air seating. The food was delicious, our server was awesome, and our friends loved the beer selection (there were some from a brewery in Scotland that they had tried on a recent trip overseas). Will definitely go again!
Our server was enthusiastic, attentive and just all around amazing. Coupled with the incredible food - it was an amazing experience. We will definitely be returning.
The pasta dishes are delicious. Great beer menu. Try the Pot de Creme (such a delightul dessert)
They were able to seat us outside on a beautiful day and wake us through the menu without over explaining. Brunch entrees and sides were tasty and promptly served. Cold brew was exceptional as well.
The beee parings were amazing. Very knowledgeable staff
We were here for a pre-theater dinner. Everything was excellent, from the food to the drinks to the service. I would highly recommend it.
Food was perfectly fine but not memorable. The complimentary bread at the start was the nicest part - wonderful texture and topped with chicken fat! While my scallops were nicely cooked, the sauce and accompaniments were not remarkable. And our server was trying to accommodate our theater tickets, but she did it in a way that was intrusive, and when she wasn't hovering, at least two others were constantly coming by to fill our water glasses, swipe just-finished plates, and ask if we needed anything else.
I had dinner with my family. I've been going to Birch and Barley for many years. It's been fantastic for food. The last time we went, the menu wasn't as good but they switched it up and that can happen. This time, we had really horrible service. I understand people can have a bad day but our server was awful. He took my mother's order and forgot it 4 minutes later and asked her again. Later, our food was taking a long time and my mother, who's 79, asked our server where the food is. He got upset and grumbled under his breath and cleaned up our plates, even though, we hadn't finished eating our appetizers. He then asked us if we wanted another drink. I asked to get another and the drink that was delivered was in a glass that was disgusting. I only realized after taking the first sip. It had lip smudges and looked like it had rolled around under the bar. I didn't drink another sip. The next day, I had a sick stomach for most of the day I wrote Birch and Barley directly and called and left a VM to let them know. It's been 3 days, no response. I don't want a free meal, I'm also surprised at the lack of response...
First time in DC and we had a wonderful waitress that had a great understanding of the menu and helped us decide on apps/meals/drinks. The food was outstanding and the ambiance of the restaurant was excellent as well. Highly recommend, good company helps too!
The door was open and it was very hot inside but the food was very good and nice staff.
We did the tasting menu and it was 100% worthwhile. Service, food, and drinks were all outstanding.
Well, eh, meh, sorta, left feeling, ummm, not was it once was. I dined with an old friend the other night and we splurged on the tasting menu (food and beer, the one with oysters, tomato toast, pork belly and cabbage.) As indicated all food was super great, creative and delicious. However, the guys who brought our beers didn't seem to care about the beer or actually know much about the beer or care (repeated for emphasis). Maybe they just woke up? The attention to the beer and stories about the beer this place is known for were not present. At all. Some smiles sure. A little sprinkle of kindness. Delicious food, yes. But, it wasn't what I wanted in terms of attention to detail, engagement, or frankly, level of caring about our dining experience. I was really excited to go, but probably won't go back given that apparently this place just kinda lost that je ne sais crois...lost its sparkly, interesting bent. Frownie face.
Well, they forgot to point in my order with everyone else's at my table, and it wasn't busy. They were very apologetic and provided us with a free appetizer so I call it even in my book. If you have friends that have....basic pallets don't bring them here, the whole dinner was lost on my boy, he was not happy. Otherwise it was a good night and I enjoyed the experience. When my dinner did arrive out was really nice, perfectly made.
Great little restaurant, convenient to my hotel, food was just superb, the deviled egg appetizer is plain sinful. My seared Gnocchi main course was perfect. Great service, very attentive staff!!! Will be on my list of places next time I am in the District.
Great brunch, good deal w/ the pre-fixe and drink special. Plenty of food that was well made. Very attentive and helpful service as well.
If you're looking for a gourmet beer experience, this is it!
Absolutely delicious food and a massive drink selection. The shaved brussel sprouts have become my favorite food and I'm counting down the days I can return to have it again. The service was great and when I was a little overwhelmed with the drink choices, as I'm a bit of novice when it comes to beer, the waiter was super helpful in trying to make a choice. Can't wait to return!
Heard about Birch and Barley Churchkey thru a Frommer’s travel guide. Arrived earlier than our Sunday night reservation and were immediately greeted and seated. Tom , our server talked beer and food with us in detail. Our ultimate choices in both exceeded our expectations. During our experience, no less than four staff members visited our table to insure we had a great meal. I raved about a white bean puree that was served with my pork belly and was rewarded with a small container to take with me. All in all, a wonderful dining experience. I enjoyed all three sours that I tried and my wife raved about her weisse beer although she is not a beer drinker.
First time at this restaurant. Very pleased. Food hot, preparation interesting, taste delicious, ambiance pleasant. Will be back!!!
We did the food flights and these were perfectly done with interesting flavors that were incredibly fresh and evolved each bite and made this one of the most memorable dining experiences this year. Each course just kept getting better and better and the service was flawless.
Definitely get the smoked half chicken and potatoes, you can't go wrong! If you like sour beers, go for the Heart of Tartness or Valencia Orange sour.
Ask for Joe to be your server and you won't be disappointed! He went above and beyond to give us the best dining experience.
Foods great, service leaves a lot to be desired. The waiter had this “I’m too cool to even be here” bad attitude and we only saw him when placing our orders for meals and when it was time to pay the bill.
Again, the food is awesome. You can tell the kitchen really knows what’s they’re doing. The service though......look elsewhere. There are plenty of places to eat in DC that have both amazing food and amazing service.
Good meal. The scallops entree was pretty tiny. Went across the street to a small plates place after and got more food, but still glad we tried Birch and Barley.
Restaurant was very expensive We did not get the help from the waiter that we should have My beer selection tasted terrible and he never checked Food was nothing special
Food was great as always. Our server, James, was amazing.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, I will be back! A little dark inside so if your e enjoying a nice dinner evening, ask to sit outside or save it for a rainy or chilly day.
I took my mom to Birch and Barley for her birthday 2 years ago. She’s raved about it since so I figured what better way to celebrate than return to enjoy it again. Unfortunately, the experience was not the same. I noticed as soon as we walked through the door that the temperature was lingering probably above 75° inside. It was difficult to get comfortable throughout our dinner because of the temperature, but did our best. Our server was helpful, but hurried us to place our entree order even though we were ordering drinks and appetizers. I hadn’t done my research to find that since our last visit there is a new chef - though the menu was recognizable, the items I recalled as exciting were no longer there. My mom ordered the gnocchi - the feature of the plate was a quail’s egg, the gnocchi was just a small portioned-compliment. I had the roasted sea bass. The portion was tiny, served with firm beans. Also ordered was the ribeye, which looked nice but again small, and also the duck, which was again, small, but flavorful. We had doughnuts, bread pudding and 3 ice cream flavors for dessert. They were fine, but I feel tried too hard (goat cheese ice cream??). Overall, the experience wasn’t as I’d hoped (especially for the price). We enjoyed each other but Birch and Barley let us down in a couple different ways.
Our server was helpful with our food choices and very friendly.
Our reservation was for 5:30 and we were seated promptly . We were going to a play which started at 730.
We got our appetizers about 615 and the food came at 6:50 which gave us about 10-12 minutes to eat. We had to leave some of our food uneaten in order to get to the play on time.
The food was good and we liked the flavor combinations.
We felt that was a really long time for our dinner to arrive. I probably would not return unless I had at least 2.5 hours to eat.
Good was good, waiter was aloof and forgot us. It is DEAFENINGLY noisy there. If you want to talk do not go here.
Great food and FANTASTIC beer. The lamb shank, on a bed of couscous, and the sweet potatoes are a must.
The 4 of us had the tasting menu with the beer pairing - this is why we made the reservation. The food was excellent though there was too much time between when we were served the beer and we received the food course. The waitress did a nice job of explaining why the food and beer were paired though her word choice could have been better a few times. Overall a good experience with excellent food and beer.
This was a blow away experience. I was seated by myself and the hostess was more than accommodating moving tables around for me. There were two tastings brought out from the kitchen. I ordered the roast chicken which was the best I have ever had! My only regret is I was on company reimbursement so couldn’t go all out with the tasting menu - which has a vegan option by the way! I will return!
Delicious food! Great brunch deals! I would go again.
My husband and I visited Birch and Barely on a much needed date night. thought the food was amazing, and all the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. I did not like how close the tables are together in the front part of the restaurant. We were seated there at first, but when I got up to go to the bathroom, I noticed there were tables in the rear of the restaurant that were much more intimate. I asked if we could move to one of the tables in the back and my request was honored without hesitation.
Our waitress was super nice and quite attentive to us. I would gladly visit Birch and Barley again.
Great food and excellent, attentive, service. We live three hours away and we will definitely be back! We each had a veggie starter - the sugar snap peas and the mushrooms. Both were perfectly cooked and deliciously flavored. We also had a smaller plate - soft shell crabs with an escabeche of peppers and onions and sea bass on a bed of mixed beans with a gremolata that set the fish off. Both were perfectly cooked and were exquisitely flavorful and expertly prepared. Kudos for both recipe development and execution. The beer list was almost overwhelming in its depth but was helpfully organized by flavor profile. The whiskey list was similarly long, although less helpfully organized, but we found delicious options from both. Definitely recommended.
The food was pretty good..the scallops were phenomenal and the pork was great flavor but a bit more fat than expected. The foi gras toast was too butter, not a whole lot of Goose liver. Our waiter was fabulous so overall was a good experience! Would go back!
Stopped in for dinner before a concert. The ambiance and service were great, we had an enjoyable time. HUGE beer list, tons of different draft options and then some crazy number of bottles on top of that. Pretty solid wine/cocktail collection as well. We ordered a few different appetizers and that actually was enough food for us. The flatbread pizzas were good and I highly recommend the deviled eggs.
Lovely experience except it was a little hot inside. Towards the end of our dining experience the A/C started to crank up!
This place is much improved since my last visit last year. Food was delicious, service impeccable. Highly recommended.
