Food was great as always. Our server, James, was amazing.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, I will be back! A little dark inside so if your e enjoying a nice dinner evening, ask to sit outside or save it for a rainy or chilly day.
I took my mom to Birch and Barley for her birthday 2 years ago. She’s raved about it since so I figured what better way to celebrate than return to enjoy it again. Unfortunately, the experience was not the same. I noticed as soon as we walked through the door that the temperature was lingering probably above 75° inside. It was difficult to get comfortable throughout our dinner because of the temperature, but did our best. Our server was helpful, but hurried us to place our entree order even though we were ordering drinks and appetizers. I hadn’t done my research to find that since our last visit there is a new chef - though the menu was recognizable, the items I recalled as exciting were no longer there. My mom ordered the gnocchi - the feature of the plate was a quail’s egg, the gnocchi was just a small portioned-compliment. I had the roasted sea bass. The portion was tiny, served with firm beans. Also ordered was the ribeye, which looked nice but again small, and also the duck, which was again, small, but flavorful. We had doughnuts, bread pudding and 3 ice cream flavors for dessert. They were fine, but I feel tried too hard (goat cheese ice cream??). Overall, the experience wasn’t as I’d hoped (especially for the price). We enjoyed each other but Birch and Barley let us down in a couple different ways.
Our server was helpful with our food choices and very friendly.
Our reservation was for 5:30 and we were seated promptly . We were going to a play which started at 730.
We got our appetizers about 615 and the food came at 6:50 which gave us about 10-12 minutes to eat. We had to leave some of our food uneaten in order to get to the play on time.
The food was good and we liked the flavor combinations.
We felt that was a really long time for our dinner to arrive. I probably would not return unless I had at least 2.5 hours to eat.
Good was good, waiter was aloof and forgot us. It is DEAFENINGLY noisy there. If you want to talk do not go here.
Great food and FANTASTIC beer. The lamb shank, on a bed of couscous, and the sweet potatoes are a must.
The 4 of us had the tasting menu with the beer pairing - this is why we made the reservation. The food was excellent though there was too much time between when we were served the beer and we received the food course. The waitress did a nice job of explaining why the food and beer were paired though her word choice could have been better a few times. Overall a good experience with excellent food and beer.
This was a blow away experience. I was seated by myself and the hostess was more than accommodating moving tables around for me. There were two tastings brought out from the kitchen. I ordered the roast chicken which was the best I have ever had! My only regret is I was on company reimbursement so couldn’t go all out with the tasting menu - which has a vegan option by the way! I will return!
Delicious food! Great brunch deals! I would go again.
My husband and I visited Birch and Barely on a much needed date night. thought the food was amazing, and all the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. I did not like how close the tables are together in the front part of the restaurant. We were seated there at first, but when I got up to go to the bathroom, I noticed there were tables in the rear of the restaurant that were much more intimate. I asked if we could move to one of the tables in the back and my request was honored without hesitation.
Our waitress was super nice and quite attentive to us. I would gladly visit Birch and Barley again.
Great food and excellent, attentive, service. We live three hours away and we will definitely be back! We each had a veggie starter - the sugar snap peas and the mushrooms. Both were perfectly cooked and deliciously flavored. We also had a smaller plate - soft shell crabs with an escabeche of peppers and onions and sea bass on a bed of mixed beans with a gremolata that set the fish off. Both were perfectly cooked and were exquisitely flavorful and expertly prepared. Kudos for both recipe development and execution. The beer list was almost overwhelming in its depth but was helpfully organized by flavor profile. The whiskey list was similarly long, although less helpfully organized, but we found delicious options from both. Definitely recommended.
The food was pretty good..the scallops were phenomenal and the pork was great flavor but a bit more fat than expected. The foi gras toast was too butter, not a whole lot of Goose liver. Our waiter was fabulous so overall was a good experience! Would go back!
Stopped in for dinner before a concert. The ambiance and service were great, we had an enjoyable time. HUGE beer list, tons of different draft options and then some crazy number of bottles on top of that. Pretty solid wine/cocktail collection as well. We ordered a few different appetizers and that actually was enough food for us. The flatbread pizzas were good and I highly recommend the deviled eggs.
Lovely experience except it was a little hot inside. Towards the end of our dining experience the A/C started to crank up!
This place is much improved since my last visit last year. Food was delicious, service impeccable. Highly recommended.
We had a big table for Mother's Day Brunch and everything was amazing.
Food was creative, delicious, and well-proportioned! Wines available by the glass could be improved.
Really fantastic all around. We had a large group seated near the front of the restaurant by the patio. Everything was excellent. The smoked chicken was one of the better dishes I’ve had and the drinks & desserts were likewise great. Highly recommend
Ok experience, bad tables, good food
Made a reservation here last minute when my mom swung through town on a Saturday and we really enjoyed ourselves. We each tried a different "flight" which meant we got to to taste a number of items and felt truly stuffed by the end. Everything was really delicious and the wait staff was great - even giving us a free "extra" dessert that we certainly didn't need after bringing the wrong dessert initially. We're also not big beer drinkers -- which I know is this place's thing -- but I must say the cocktails were also lovely for the non-beer folks out there.
Lovely brunch with outdoor seating. Tasty, innovative cocktails and fresh, delicious food. Wonderful beer list. Helpful service. Recommended.
Great food and dining experience! Appetizers were delicious! Server was really helpful in picking out beer tasting.
Food was excellent, beer selection amazing and our waiter was fantastic. Knowledgeable, engaging and fabulous.
Prepare yourself for a crisis of choice - the book, yes, book of beers will make your head spin. We had excellent, knowledgeable service, tho, to help us through and you can order small glasses if you want a taste. The menu is inventive gastro pub style. We ordered a couple apps and shared the smoked chicken and it was more than enough food - generous portions. The cauliflower app and the charred sweet potato were good but very heavily spiced. The shaved Brussel sprouts were clean and freshly flavored. The smoked chicken arrived with the prettiest, glossy skin but it was overcooked. Tasted like it was left in the brine or sous vide a bit too long. The chef clearly likes strong flavors.
Always a good choice.
Amazing service from Alli. Loved the tasting menus!
Wait staff is a bit short. Food was great, drinks are
If you like eclectic dining choices and craft beer, check out Birch and Barley. The deviled egg appetizer was on point, and the short rib entree needed no knife, it was so tender. Servers were very attentive, yet not overbearing. Wonderful dining experience.
Excellent evening. Food, beers, and service all top notch. It was REALLY DARK inside, tho. Hard to read menus!
Excellent! Our server, Megan, was incredible - efficient, friendly, and able to provide perfect recommendations regarding the menu.
Excellent as usual. Delicious food--even things that don't sound like they'll be too flavorful are BURSTING with flavor (draft beer list impressive & good too). Waitress extremely knowledgeable about the food and the beer. She brought me samples until I foudn what I wanted. Service was high class.
My girlfriend and I came here for brunch recently with some running group friends and it's quickly becoming our favorite place! Everything about this place is awesome. We look forward to becoming loyal customers at a place where everybody truly knows your name.
The server was excellent and offered to correct our overly salted dishes, but in the end, it just wasn’t great.
Sooo, there's such a thing as Gnocchi with crispy rabbit and bacon, smh. So very good, as was our entire meal. The 'tater tots' were extraterrestrial (huge, perfectly crisp on the outside and moist/flavorful on the inside). Creative offerings as well as classic brunch staples; delightful!
Oh and did we mention how genuinely pleasant and professional Jennifer and Elise were? Made our time at B&B that much better and the host was most welcoming.
Applause for the entire Birch and Barley team.
We were at the Birch and Barley for our 25th wedding anniversary dinner. We had been there before and loved the beer-paired, six course meal. Though the menu is very "meat forward" (as the server noted), we asked if they could cater our vegetarian diets. The chef did and assembled an amazing selection of courses.
The final course was a Zabaione dessert with carmalized brioche and orange slices. Totally amazing.
Our experience was nothing less than perfect!
This was our first time going for dinner. My husband and I along with another close couple. Food was tasty but portions were small. They didn’t have 2 wine bottles that we wanted and gave something close. Our server lady was not friendly. One of our friends were celebrating their birthday this week, I had specifically mentioned in the note while making a reservation AND told her in person to see if can do something special. She promised she will put a candle in our desert AND give us beer which was on her. I was happy to hear. Then, time for desert came and no candles or promised beer on the house . We even got our check. Then I asked her what happened to the request and she was like “ohh” and went back to get us I don’t know what. I was very disappointed with the service. Our friend was not interested at this point and we just left even before she could get back. Will not go here again.
Birch and Barley continues to impress us each and every time we go. We are very much into beer, making this an obvious destination as I would put their beer list (shared with their 2nd floor bar, Churchkey) against any restaurant in the world, but the food is consistently great as well. Additionally, the service is always phenomenal and if you care to engage with them, the staff can always hold a great and often educational talk about beer. While I could talk about their brews for the entirety of this review, I would hate to leave out that they really have some exceptional cocktails as well. Also, please do not think that the drinks are at the center of the attraction here - the cuisine stands on its own against DC's best. We had their Mother's Day Brunch and each course on the menu was enjoyed by all. We look forward to returning for dinner and seeing what their new chef has in store.
We always go back when we visit DC. Great food and fabulous beer from ChurchKey above. Highlight of our trips there. We stay close by so we can walk. A tradition for us from California!
Our server was great and the food was equally great!
