Billy's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
While the service was great, the food on our night there was not. We ordered two rib-eye steaks with the daily special peppercorn sauce and the lamb chops (house specialty). The rib-eye steaks were barely edible due to the amount of fat and gristle (over 40-50% of the serving was fat and gristle) and under cooked. The sauce was a milky white sauce with no flavor that actually just seemed to hide the poor cut of meat. The lamb chops were ordered medium but came to the table raw (Dark purple and cold with only a light searing on the outside). A Cesar salad was served that was inedible as well.
Our server and the staff were fine. A $10 discount was given for my poor steak, but didn't compensate for such a poor experience.
There are better restaurants to go to in Lincoln with much better food. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting or living in Lincoln.
Billy's was a great experience overall! The food was excellent and the portions were surprisingly very large in size for what most people would consider fine dining. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the service was incredible, as one might expect once walking into the front doors. Great place for a date night spot off the beaten path in downtown Lincoln.
Love Billy's as a place to dine for a special occasion with family! Great food, nice place to visit, rooms almost seem private with an historic flavor- don't have to listen to multiple conversations, music or kitchen noise at Billy's. Hospitality on top of all that makes this one of our favorite places in Lincoln!
The food was very good, but our options were constricted. We're looking forward to the new menu. Service and ambiance were fine.
That said, seating for us two placed us in a trafficked area; the table to which we were moved featured a floor vent (with a blower) at each end. I won't put up with that again.
The food was not good. The veal was tasteless and a bit tough (for veal). It tasted like someone opened a can of pork and beans and poured the sauce over a little bit of under cooked onion, green pepper, snow peas and?...and overcooked twirly pasta. I could have used the same ingredients (although I'd use a better pasta and a different sauce) at home and made something better for about $5 per serving - this was $30! It was a huge huge bowl of curly pasta but I would have preferred something more flavorful and special. I used a lot of salt and pepper which helped but so what? Sorry Billie's, this wasnot your best (i hope) My friend had the same thing and sent the veal back asking them to do 'something' to it and she said the garlic they added helped but she felt cheated.
I was looking for a nice location that neither myself nor my date had every been to and I found Billy's on OpenTable. What a great find! The food was amazing and the environment was perfect for a nice, quiet, dinner! The chef even came and spoke with us about our dinner! An absolutely wonderful experience! I look forward to returning in the near future!
When you ask at the reservation point if it's a special occasion and we responded yes - anniversary - there was nothing there to acknowledge so if you are going to ask - the anticipation is that you would receive something or at least an acknowledgement - so don't ask if you don't plan to offer a free dessert, glass of wine, Happy Anniversary greeting, etc. Otherwise very nice evening and great food.
Despite being a very slow night (only one other table which was finishing up when we arrived, by the time we left there was three other tables but still house was basically empty) the service was slow and less than attentive. The menu was small with 4 apps listed and 6 Entrees (filet mignon, ny strip, braised pork shank, rack of lamb, duck, and pistachio crusted salmon) plus the special Atlantic shark.
The entrees included a salad or soup. The salad was definitely overdressed. The soup, clam chowder, had good flavor but had more potato than clam. The rolls were nothing special and I wonder if they are made in house.
I ordered the salmon which was good but the risotto was overcooked. My table mate ordered the duck which was good but it was two quarters i.e. Thigh, leg with no breast
Meat. However, it was cooked properly.
The cucumber mule was good but again service was lacking and the server never asked if we wanted another one. Our waters were frequently empty as was my ice tea.
I believe the bill was right around $70 with tax for two entrees, one drink and one ice tea. While the food was generally ok the service and the value was not there.
The ambiance was nice and it was nice to a quiet meal.
We love Billy's for special occasions! It has a great ambience with all the historical pictures, cozy rooms, and individual attention from the servers and sometimes even the chef! He will often come out to find out how to best meet your needs as a vegetarian / vegan. This is a classy and classic restaurant!
We loved our experience, we had a 5:00 pm reservation so there was a time we were the only ones there everything was perfect, the Chef came out and talked with us and suggested the fish of the day and he was funny and charming just for that I would return, anyway My wife had the fish , she loved it and I had a Chicken with cheese sauce and Pasta. Enjoy the whole experience.
We thought the evening was lovely. It had been many years since we had been to Billy's. My husband remarked it was probably the best steak he had had out anywhere. The staff was warm and inviting and we had an enjoyable time visiting with the staff in the bar as well. It was very interesting listening to the past history of Billy's restaurant. One can see why it has remained a Mainstay in Lincoln Nebraska.
Billy's is an excellent restaurant and the food was unique and delicious. It is a little on the pricey end but the food is very good. The setting is awesome as it's in an old house. I love the way they have done the decor and kept the original woodwork, etc..
Do not use open table to make reservations as they do not look at it if it's within 2 hours of closing. They will close early if they are not busy so I'd suggest go for lunch or a good 2 hours before closing or call first.
We were turned away one night even though we had an open table reservation 30 minutes before closing. The next night we made a reservation 1 hour before closing. If I had not called we would not have gotten in. They didn't seem happy we came anyway. But from there the experience was very good. Food was delicious. Service was good.
They just didn't seem very happy we arrived at first. We are from out of town and had a high school event that didn't allow us to arrive earlier.
Great food and great service at Billy's We started the evening with crab cakes-- which were some of the best I have ever had. Great crispy texture while being soft and moist inside. . My husband and son both had the evening special which was Veal Piccatta. I had the Chicken for Jordan. All meals had very large servings and outstanding flavor. Our server was very friendly, and a bit quirky so made the entire evening thoroughly enjoyable. We would most definitely visit Billy's again for any occasion.
We chose this restaurant since the guest was from Japan. He was interested in the old house and decorations as he has not been inside an old American home. He enjoyed the steak. I had sea bass special. The portion size was generous. The waiter was attentive. Since we went there at 5:30 PM it was rather quiet and the service was very fast. It was a short walking distance from our hotel and we enjoyed our wine.
Gracious host and seating, with prompt attention by the wait staff. Delicious food.
It was too quiet. We could hear every word said by diners in the same room and I know they could hear us. It was kind of uncomfortable. Maybe some music???? If there was music, I couldn't hear it.
This was my first experience at this restaurant and I was not disappointed. The food was absolutely fantastic; the chicken satay skewers are worth every penny. I ended up loving the raspberry vinaigrette and asking to purchase some and they accommodated me with a wine size bottle to rake home. The entrees we had were top notch and we will definitely be coming back for a future visit. I give this place a 10 out of 10. Prefect place for a romantic dinner or prom night date.
Billy's restaurant is located on the first floor of an old house. It is close to the state capitol and near downtown. The food was good and the portions were very large. The dinner menu was small but did include one special. The cocktail menu Included traditional cocktails and also some that were more exotic.
Billy's is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. With a wide menu that is sure to appeal to all taste buds, the food is beautiful both to look at and to taste. The timing of the procession of courses was perfect, our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, and everyone left full and happy!
We got there early to have a cocktail at the bar before our table was ready. Unfortunately we sat at the bar (small, seats maybe 8) for 15 minutes and the bartender never interacted with us, we couldn't even order our cocktails. Once seated at our table everything was fantastic, better than expected. The timing on bringing out each course was perfect and the food tasted amazing.
Lamb was over cooked but waitress never asked how everything was. Garlic potatoes were fine, but "Applebee's" quality. I wanted to be impressed, but was underwhelmed. One more thing. My wife and I were checking calendars planning a family vacation and the cook delivered the meal and made a snide remark about our cell phones. Really? I get it but it's not his place to berate us when he doesn't know what's going on!
Super food, very pretty setting, nice people working there. Very limited wine selection. The staff was nice, but for a nicer place like this they could have dressed more professionally. Many looked like they had come from a business causal day at another job involving an office setting.
