Bilbo Baggins Ratings and Reviews
If I opened a restaurant called Looney Tunes Cafe, what would you expect? Maybe dressed up servers. Maybe Warner Brothers characters depicted in some way all over the walls. TVs with old cartoons playing maybe?
If I opened a restaurant called King Arthur's court, what would you expect? Probably Swords, stone-like tables or items, medieval theme.
Well if you name a restaurant Bilbo Baggins then it should probably conjure up an air of the Shire, or Hobbits, or LOTR in general. They have some dishes named for characters, but even that has no relation. "Smaug's Delight" pizza isn't spicy, isn't golden, nothing that could be consider "wings" even by loose artist food standards.
I understand not every place needs to be a themed restaurant, but with a name like Bilbo Baggins...you kind of hope for something!
With the lack of theme, you then hope to have great food, or cheap prices, or great location right? Well the food is tasty, but not special. If you drink anything besides water you'll spend $25+/person. And the location is not a plus or a negative.
There is nothing wrong with Bilbo Baggins...but you can't help but imagine how much better it could be.
Horrible and late service (took an hour, and then the waiter dropped 2 plates of food), food was poor quality, and another waiter who was serving a table next to us of about 20 family members from Spain was so rude to them. Will never, ever go back there again.
Wanted to like this quirky place, but: No record of reservation and said they were full, had to show email and insist. We were then seated in a half empty room ("full"?), waited 10 minutes and had to flag a waiter to take drink order and fill water glasses. Gave app and food order at same time. After close to an hour and an assurance that our apps were cooking, waiter eventually said they would be "on us." Good thing, because 20 minutes later our meals came, with no apps in sight. Ate quickly and left, food just ok, will not return.
We love Bilbo and frequently go. We normally don't make a reservation, but it was very busy that night, with its proximity to the Alexandria Boat Parade, so we were very happy that we did! Even though they were super-busy, the service was great, and we were fed and got our check with plenty of time to make it to our "Escape Room" time afterward. Food was awesome as always, and the beer selection is the best in Alexandria! Trivia cards on the table and ambiance were fun as always.
This place was beyond terrible. We waited for an hour to get our food and it was inedible. I had a quiche that was cooked beyond recognition and my husband’s ‘middle earth chili’ looked like hamburger helper on noodles with ketchup. It was disgusting and service was as bad as the food. I don’t know how this place has 4 Stars. I will never go back and regret that we didn’t leave after waiting so long.
We hat to hunt down a host/hostess to get seated. Our initial drink order went okay. Food took a long time be served and was just okay, nothing special at all but expensive. The second drink order was incorrect, not sure if it was server or bartender's fault. It looked like to me they needed more help as it was busy.
We came here for my wife's birthday and all three of us enjoyed our entrees. I had an excellent pork chop with succotash. My friend had a seafood pasta dish that he said was loaded with squid that was perfectly prepared. My wife had a rosemary chicken that was excellent. I got to sample what she could not finish. There was a great list of draft beers. We enjoyed Bilbo's enough to return there for a nightcap after we had been several other places in Old Town, barhopping.
Very enjoyable place!!
A nice neighborhood spot. Service and ambience are great. Nice and quiet, so you can have a conversation even in a full bar area. Food was good . We weren’t expecting five Michelin stars but it certainly beats most other old town restaurants except la refuge.
We went for a birthday dinner with 4 adults. We were very pleased with the variety of menu selections and all of our meals were excellent. The yellowfin tuna was near perfect! And the house made bread pudding was delicious. The service was unobtrusive and timely. We love a casual atmosphere, never felt hurried and will definitely go again.
We had not been to Bilbo Baggins for years, and after last night we were wondering why we had waited so long to return. The menu was extensive and had many good options. We both chose the Wiener schnitzel with spaetzle, which we had enjoyed often in Germany. It was delicious, as were the just-right mixed vegetables. It was wider than we remembered but organized with small dining spaces, which we liked.
Pleasant surprise for a family dinner after arriving to town via Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Open Table helped us secure our reservation. Food was creative, fresh, and full of flavor, and the atmosphere was a nice change with its unique themed flare.
Absolutely great food. Best lunch option in Old Town. Reasonable prices. Great service. Been there many times and it's always great! Only thing I don't like are the high top tables. They're a little uncomfortable after a while. Better seating and i'd make BBs my go to place.
We have been going to Bilbo Baggins on and off since it opened. The food quality seems to have diminished a little over the years, but it is still tasty. We were disappointed that they now charge for that awesome raisin bread. There actually was no raisin bread when we were there. Very sad about that.
This was hands down the best birthday restaurant experience I've ever had. The staff was attentive, the food was prompt and delicious, the drinks were creatively named and perfectly made, and it was so much fun. The building itself is over a century old, which was awesome to learn, so we forgave the lack of a round green door. Our waiter was engaging, knowledgeable, and funny, and other servers even stopped by to joke and partake in the nerdiness! No table in the restaurant had dissatisfied people. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and I'm definitely going back.
My family (two adults, two kids) went for an early dinner, and we picked this place because we were reading The Lord of the Rings aloud together, so we couldn't pass the chance to dine at Bilbo Baggins. ;) It's basically a bar/pub--most seats are at high tops, and our table got a little crowded with food and drinks for four. It's a distinctive spot if a bit gritty. Food is fine--though nothing particularly standout. They had trivia cards (including LOTR specific ones) at the tables, so that was a fun way to pass the time while we waited for our food.
Dinner was good but the appatizer (crab dip and chips) was awful. The dip tasted good but the chips were old and flimsy. It was loke they were from the day before and had been left out. No crunch at all. Waiter was ok, not very personable and didnt say much, even when delivering food. Interesting place and idea but not something I would go back too.
Being a literary nerd, I was really looking forward to dining at a Lord of the Rings/Hobbit themed restaurant, but I was disappointed to find the only link to the theme, beside the menu, was a box of Lord of the Ring Pez figures on a shelf. My disappointment did not stop there. I ordered the baked brie and was deeply saddened to be served a microwaved baked brie, so the pastry was tough and chewy, and the crackers were slightly stale. A very disappointing experience.
We had pizza and pasta dishes and enjoyed them both. We were in a hurry and the service was quick which we appreciated. Great ambiance with fun wall signs and some Lord of the Rings themed decorations. The seafood chowder was very good but did taste a bit like there was some pumpkin/squash mixed in which surprised me.
