We went for our son’s birthday. The food was very good and the service attentive; however, they appeared to be understaffed.
We chose Bilbo Baggins because it was within walking distance of the First Night Alexandria celebration. The place was quiet at 8:30 pm but rapidly filled in. Our meal was great - the wiener schnitzel I ordered was perfect and plentiful, the squash soup was thick and creamy. I had a pint of O'Reilly Stout, which was wonderful. A fun, unpretentious neighborhood bar & restaurant, great for people watching.
We had a reservation for New Year's Eve. They were busy and had new wait staff. Our server was earnest, pleasant and eager to please, but ordered a wrong entree for our party of two. I was disappointed in the quality of the food. The portabello mushroom appetizer had an off taste. This was a go-to for me when I lived in Mt. Vernon. I'll give it another chance, but I wouldn't recommend it on the strength of our New Year's Eve dinner.
Our waiter seemed to be managing upstairs and downstairs alone other than a busser. We had to flag him down for water and assistance.
My Caesar salad had under cooked calamari and the large outer leaves from a head of romaine.
It is irritating when a server only stops to chat and apologize when bringing the receipt for signature.
Excellent service and was able to have a conversation without shouting - good time.
Very nice dining experience. Excellent service and delicious food served in a relaxed, casual environment.
My wife and I were having a short visit and returned to Bilbo Baggins as we have in years past. It was a quiet rainy Monday night. The food was excellent and the service tops. It is obvious why this fine establishment has been in business for 40 years!
Very quiet at lunchtime. Great food.
We sat in our seats for 10 minutes before anyone approached us. The service was incredibly slow and they forgot my daughter's meal. We will not be going back.
We used to go to Bilbo Baggins a lot years ago. This was a very poor experience. We made a reservation and were seated right away in what seemed like the baby/toddler section. One poor waiter had the entire upstairs section by himself. He was trying hard, but the service was poor. He was obviously overwhelmed and neither he nor his runner/busboy knew which table got what order. We were constantly being presented with food and drinks another table had ordered. My daughter ordered the gnocchi with butter and parmesan cheese (a modification to what was offered on the menu). It came out with alfredo sauce. I sent it back and it came back absolutely plain; no butter, no cheese, just plain boiled gnocchi. I'm sure it was due to the lack of English spoken by the waiter and boy helping him out. She ate a couple bites then I told her I'd fix it the way she liked when we got home. The onion soup and the duck entree were very good.
Talk about a "tired" Alexandria mainstay.... The service was pretty bad and the orders were wrong. And we were just TWO people! Giving it a pass from now on....
We liked food choices. The quesadilla was more like a tostada but fun flavors. The fries were good w ample sauce. Loved the veggie platter the best. So many things on the plate and all were tasty.
Service was slow. Drinks came pretty late. But they were nice about it. Good beer.
My family and I walked in and were seated immediately (we had a reservation), but we waited at our table for 15-20 minutes for a server to come to our table. Since no one came by, we called over to the bartender who was passing by, so we could ask what was going on. He tried to ignore us, but we were persistent and eventually, he turned around and held up a finger to signal one moment. When he did come over, he did not ask us what we wanted, did not make eye contact, and told us to “wait for your (our) server,” and walked away. We waited another 5 minutes then left. We were very disappointed because the menu looked good and the place is very charming inside, but obviously, I would not recommend this place.
We are here with a group 2-3 times each year. We will be back.
A wonderful anniversary dinner in every way. Excellent food that was perfect in every way. This was our first visit but we look forward to many more.
They were only seating downstairs but it wasn’t bad. There was no wait for a table. It seemed like they were somewhat short staffed but we didn’t have to wait too long for our food and drinks. Overall, it was a good experience.
I was extremely embarrassed and disappointed in our experience here. I did diligent research and this restaurant appeared to be more than a “bar”. My husband is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and so when I stumbled across this and looked at the menu and pictures, it looked like a fun local restaurant with awesome LOTR decor! Boy was I wrong! The bar is downstairs and the more restaurant-looking part with the LOTR decor is upstairs, but apparently they only seat people upstairs on Friday’s and Saturdays and we dine on Sunday evening. There was no LOTR decor downstairs. There were trivia cards on each table but we only had a few LOTR cards among a variety of other trivia cards. The menu did not fit the feel of the bar. The menu had a variety of options which for a bar, was impressive. I got the Cinnamon Porkloin with Fruit Chutney and it was as dry and chewy as a tire. My husband got the Giardiniera Chicken Penne which he said was delicious. On my reservation I made note that this was for a birthday and they didn’t even acknowledge his birthday at all. I’m extremely disappointed and embarrassed that this is where I surprised my husband for his birthday and I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re coming here with the expectation that it reflects LOTR to any extent.
Started quiet then a rowdy large party came in. Food was good, not amazing
Really good food! Pizza is delicious and the duck was amazing!
So many positive reviews had to come from somewhere so we gave it a shot. 8 of us with a few kids. Old/cheesy decor and wobbly tables have it a sort of charm. Service was very fast and efficient and pleasant. All of the Italian fishers were very good (gnocchi, calimari, pizza). Steak was ok, nothing fantastic. French onion soup was great. Steak tacos were good. Crab cakes were stringy. Salt content in all of the food was very high, even the stuff we liked. All in all, it was good, probably wouldn't crave to go back unless other options were not available.
With a name like Bilbo Baggins I would think there would be more LOTR influence on the atmosphere. However there was VERY little. There were only two other tables when we go there and still had to wait to be served. The waiter smiled and seemed friendly, but barely spoke english. We asked basic questions about the menu and couldn't get a clear response. The food was ok. I wouldn't go there again. I got the Monte Cristo the bread was soggy and I didn't eat half of it. The french fries were good. My friend got the Quiche and she said it was ok. But for the price it was an extremely small piece. We both got a desert and though we ordered two different things, they looked and tasted the same. For the money, you would be better going somewhere else.
We had been to Bilbo Baggins many times but that was a long time ago. We took friends there on Friday, 9/27 because we thought it hadn't changed. Changing for the better is one thing but this was not that. The upstairs room, which is the beauty of that restaurant, is only used for banquets. We asked the waitress if there are many banquets and said, "no". The wonderful raison bread that was a signature course before the appetizers, is only served on the weekends. In the past, you could actually buy a loaf while dining at the restaurant. The ladies room was terribly maintained---only one working sink (out of two) and that one only worked if you put the cold water handle back on and held it down tightly as you turned. The door to the ladies room wouldn't close. The men's room had similar issues with the faucets but not quite as bad. The down staircase out of the restaurant is in need of repair and is a hazard to anyone who is stair challenged. The bench outside, where people could wait for the rest of their party to arrive, is peeling, cracked, and in need of paint.
Needless to say we were very disappointed with the restaurant's décor and ambience. The food was OK but not up to the quality that we remembered.
Unfortunately, we would not go back to Bilbo Baggins unless some changes are made to reflect the pictures you see on their website (which is the upstairs room).
No other way to say it ( and I sooo rarely review a restaurant this poorly) it was such a complete disappointment
Our cocktails were erroneously mixed at the bar
The soup was clearly from a can AND lukewarm
The pizza contained ingredients not listed in the menu description. And had it we would not have ordered it
The salad was full of stale ingredients such as rice noodles, wonton pieces, old cucumbers
I pushed it to the side after five bites.
The waiter asked if I didn’t like it and I agreed but he never asked why or what specifically
Great atmosphere and excellent drink/beer selection. Brunch was really enjoyable.
Wide menu selection. Always good food. Reasonable prices. Great service. Had great brunches and lunches there.
My daughter in law and I shared the hamburger. It was supposed to be medium but it was over cooked and in stead of just cutting it in haft they sent it out with one patty and one half of the bun on each plate like a open face sandwich. Thought it was strange. The fries were good.
Casual place with excellent food. Everyone at the table ordered something different and everyone was happy with their choice. I had the salmon and 💘.
Wonderful place serving tasty food. Ambiance and service were outstanding.
Very accommodating and pleasant service. Good menu and food. Will revisit.
We used to dine here over 20 years ago. My, has it gone downhill! It was once one of the best restaurants in old town. Now it’s just a noisy beer and burger joint with really slow service.
Awesome service & Delicious food = A Great Choose!!! The meal will not disappoint. Three of us all got the lamb chops which are outstanding. The meal includes butternut squash, mashed potatoes and asparagus. You will not leave hungry.
My party of four had a delightful dinner at Bilbo's, one of our favorite restaurants for years. The salmon and swordfish dishes were delicious and beautifully plated. The ample portion of gnocchi in marinara sauce was yummy. And my very picky eater friend loved her lamb chops. Great selection of wines by the glass or bottle...as well as a nice selection of Belgian beers. Outstanding and attentive service.
Not enough staff...waited 20 minutes to be seated with a reservation. Waited a long time to be served. Food arrived before drinks and was not that great.
I was disappointed with my experience. The staff wasn’t very friendly and the service was slow. My fiancé had to ask them 4 times for a beer and they got it wrong the first time. The food was average as well so I wouldn’t go back again.
Both meals were excellent! Beef Filet was cooked perfectly. Lamb chops were generous and seasoned well - mint sauce was a nice addition. My son is still raving about the mashed potatoes
We took friends who had never been to the restaurant and were curious about it. However when we arrived we were seated in the pub area downstairs. I requested to sit in the restaurant upstairs but was told it was closed. I asked the reason and was told the boss said so. The upstairs of the restaurant is large and beautiful and what my friends wanted to see. The pub area was crowded and noisy. The service was also slow. It appeared there was only one waiter on duty. Food was good but it was not the night we expected.
This establishment is average at best. It’s not a put down by any means but an observation. If you’re looking for a pizza and a pint then you’re in luck.
Loved it! Great service and excellent food in a cozy, unpretentious space.
Comfortable and cozy place with excellent beer selection and great pasta dishes.
