Bilbo Baggins Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant is a must go to when in Old Town Alexandria. From the outside of the restaurant and downstairs, you may think this is a local pub. However inside be prepared to eat the most delicious food with impeccable service. The menu features local favorites plus cuisine from all of the US. When in Old Town, go to Bilbo Baggins for sure!
We stopped at Bilbo Baggins for lunch and found the food to be outstanding and the portions to be just right. The portobello mushroom with brie was a great start. The entrees were tasty and the desserts excellent. The service was prompt and the server pleasant to talk to. Bilbo Baggins has a nice, cozy and friendly atmosphere and we have already recommended it to friends.
We went for Sunday Brunch during Alexandria's Restaurant Week. We ordered the New Orleans beignets and thankfully kept our expectations low, as they were nothing like the original thing in NOLA. My husband then ordered french toast, while I had an omelette. His french toast was tasty and a very sizable portion. My omelette was actually pretty good, though was pretty salty (which was somewhat expected since it came with applewood bacon inside). I ordered it without cheese but it came out with a slice of cheese in the fold. Thankfully, I was able to scrape it off and our server gave us a free slice of (very tasty!) chocolate cake for the mistake. It was one of the only things she did that was noteworthy. Our server was not very good, attentive, or engaging, but we could hear the other server on the other side of the room engage quite often with his tables. Not everyone is cut out to be in the food service industry. All in all, I would probably return.
Has ambiance of a bar with dinner. Definitely locals place. Reasonable prices. Very casual. Disappointed no bread was offered, it's not part of menu. Very loud so hard to converse and one in our party had hearing aids. Waiter was very attentive. Would consider for grabbing a bite while hanging out in olde town.
Sit at the bar area...I've been here a few times and always get sat upstairs in the weird family style dining area. I even asked to be seated downstairs, but the guy wouldn't do it because the upstairs was empty. The food and drinks are pretty good, but the ambiance of the upstairs for a couple or two friends is weird. The decor attempts to be like the hobbit, but fails and ends up looking like a family style Italian restaurant. Sit downstairs!
Bilbo Baggins is a great 'neighborhood' bar for a get together with friends any day of the week. I was surprised at the length of the wine list and the draft beer selection. It was a 'beer' day for me and was not disappointed. I had the 'Shire' pizza (pulled pork). It was very good. The dessert selections were nothing to write home about but I didn't mind as I had another beer for dessert. Service was nice and friendly but it was a Sunday evening and not very busy. I recommend giving Bilbo Baggins a try when you are in Alexandria. You won't be disappointed.
The food was excellent and we enjoyed having our choice of good beer. Also, the staff were extremely flexible and accommodating of the constantly-changing number of diners in our group. We changed our reservations 3 times and the final group number was yet another change, and the staff remained cheerful and helpful. It's in a nice neighborhood with easy access from the Metro. The Tolkien theme is fun but not overdone. The menu provided great options for a large group with widely diverging preferences.
We went to Bilbo Baggins to celebrate New Years Eve. Getting a reservation was difficult, as the first few times we tried, your website told us there were no seats available, however, there were many open tables - hence - it was a nice, quiet dinner. We were disappointed when we arrived and learned that the full and varied menu that we'd seen online at their website was not available - don't know if this was unique for New Years, or is the norm. The food was good, but nothing exceptional, and for four meals, an appetizer, and 3 non-alcoholic beverages, we felt it was a very expensive evening.
They are back! In my opinion Bilbo struggled at times earlier this year. We have always loved Bilbo for the food, beers and totally cool ambiance with a neighborhood feel. We tried it again tonight and it was a fantastic dining experience. The pork tenderloins with chutney was perfectly cooked and the chutney was so fresh. My husbands lamb chop dinner was outstanding and perfectly cooked as well. Mashed potatoes were so flavorful and a great accompaniment. The other sides were paired well and had tons of flavor. The service was attentive but not obtrusive at all. Waiters were very knowledgeable about the food and beer when asked. Wide variety of food and the beer selection is crazy!! We will be back! So glad this gem of a restaurant has found its stride again. Try it!
Restaurant was completely out of chicken, which was ok with us so we ordered a burger and the mushroom risotto. Service was slow. We noticed that several other tables received their food before us even though they were seated well after we placed our food order (one was a party of 6, we were only 2). The food was very good, though we were so hungry after the wait that we inhaled it and didn't stop to savor anything. Restrooms were filthy.
Heard good things about this place but we were very disappointed by the food. I ordered seafood risotto which was on their special menu and my husband ordered a cheese burger. My husband said his burger was a very thin patte served on English muffin. My rissoto was very salty and served over raw asparagus. I was expecting better food considering the price and what we heard from friends. Service was ok. The dining area upstairs was roomy and accommodating for us sitting with a toddler. The food showed up fairly quickly. Maybe it's more fun to sit at the bar and have some drinks but not coming back for food.
Beer choices were the best part of the night, though the flight wasn't served really cold. Some had excellent food while others had just OK food. Verdict was the Lamb chops were excellent. I felt like there were no great tables...even though we went there on a night when they were fairly empty, the choice for tables that could seat anything over 4 people was minimal. Probably will try other Old Town restaurants before returning here.
I love this place; however my friends and I were stuck upstairs with groups of 6 and 8, and two tables with toddlers who were very vocal. The wallpaper and decor was horrible and way overdue for an update. I normally sit downstairs and have always had great seating and great service. This night, the server had to tend to another large table along with mine which tried our patience and once we received our food, for the first time ever, it was luke warm. Over all I was disappointed with this experience only.
We were seated upstairs away from the bar crowd below, and it was only us and one other couple. The waiter was very attentive and quick. The atmosphere is fun, and there are many references to the Lord of the Rings movies. The food was fantastic. I had a pizza, my boyfriend had the duck, and we loved all of it. The beer selection was unique and delicious. The prices were reasonable, $15-$20 a plate. I would definitely go back for another special occasion.
My fiancé found this place and loved the food so we went for our 3 year anniversary. Nice, actual bar atmosphere but not run down just really laid back. Food was great, staff attentive and the lamb chops were some of the best I've had. We will be back again. The theme helps as we love the books but it isn't shoved in your face at all.
It was wonderful. We were in town for a high school reunion and we had a super fantastic waiter. He answered all of our questions, suggested wines, brought refills and, best of all, let us keep chatting while we were catching up with each other. It was a wonderful afternoon!!! Many thanks to our server and the good food and atmosphere.
I was disappointed with my experience. I thought the food was overpriced for the portion sizes and the quality. We ordered the Beef Tenderloin tacos. They came in double corn tortillas that weren't toasted so they were soggy. I thought the amount of beef was very small. The Dragon Wings had a really weird flavor. The cheese on the French Onion soup was not toasted so although it was melted it did not stay on the top of the ramekin. I thought the decor was lacking for such a great subject matter. Our daughter is a freshman at GW. We travel to DC often. We will NOT be visiting Bilbo Baggin's in the future I'm afraid.
