The name is a bit misleading, it's not a Lord of the Rings-themed restaurant. What it is, is a great pub, with a good wine, beer and whisky list and really good pub food, that happens to have a whimsical Hobbit name, and that's a fun touch. Everyone found something on the menu, including an excellent vegetarian plate. A second and third option without meat would be great. The lobster bisque tasted great but needs small chunks of lobster even if you have to raise the price. The fish dishes were outstanding - loved the tuna and the swordfish. We took a look a around and loved the different areas (bar, dinning room and nooks) and the upstairs rooms are wonderful for 25-100 guests. But don't be misled by the name - it ain't the Shire. Great pub.
The food was okay. I was really going for the name of the restaurant. Any Middle Earth lover as myself would see this and want to visit. I was expecting a lot more Middle Earth. If you are going to have a restaurant called Bilbo Baggins with the The Green Dragon Pub attached to it, have Middle Earth stuff. Yes it has a couple of Bilbo Baggins logos because of the name and a couple of drinks and dishes are named after some characters but other than that, all I seen was a couple boxes of Pez dispensers with LOTR characters in it. Make the experience Middle Earth everything. All in all, I'm still glad I went.
I would recommend for the ambience and location, and the beer selection - but not necessarily for the service. Our waiter kept getting bungled up on the beer, kept pushing to take our order although clearly we were trying to catch up with old friends, and couldn't tell the difference between the beer I ordered and what I got. I ordered the veggie platter, and it was just OK - nothing special about it. The appetizers were good though - we had the shrimp (spicy but good). I would come back and try a different entree - and ask for a different waiter!
I've been here a number of times over the years and this visit, was really non-plussed. The upstairs were I normally go was closed, so the downstairs dining room was full and really loud. The food was at best average....the menu wasn't inspiring....and the beer samplers (4 of 5) my group of three tried did not inspire us to order more. I have enjoyed Bilbo in the past, but this was an off-nite.
Food was decent but tuna crust was too sweet. Asparagus was perfect. Beer selection was large but not varied enough. Mostly hoppy. Server spilled beer delivering to table and did not apologize or care to clean up mess at table.
This was a fun place to visit. They were not that busy and it took a while to be seated. Our waiter was very nice but seemed to be distracted by others coming in so our order wasn't take right away. The menu has a great selection of beer and wine. We liked how everything was named after The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The food was good, service a little slow but all in al we would go back again. Maybe to sit at the bar and have light appetizers with some drinks.
Stood around confused who to talked to. Bartender and others had me wait by the door and “someone would be by soon” where I waited awkwardly for another 5-6 minutes as I watched the bartender and server walk past me several times without another word. apparently there was only one server/ host (someone that walked past me several times) for a sat night. Reservation wasn’t needed, he didn’t even ask my name or let me finish my sentence before he started walking to a table and waved me over. He indeed was the only server so naturally the wait for everything was long. They were out of several menu items, naturally ordering was very rushed since he was the only one working, drink orders were incorrect, my tacos were all lettuce with very very little meat. I have heard great things and maybe my expectations were too high but I just was not a great experience.
This is my favorite restaurant in Alexandria, VA. I love Schnitzel and they make the best in the area. Plus, they have a huge drink menu - I always have something great. Plus, what a fantastic theme for a restaurant.
Nice cozy atmosphere, good food and great service.
I was really disappointed in Bilbo Baggins. It had been amping my favorites 30 years ago.
We went to Bilbo Baggins during restaurant week. As best as I could tell there was only one waiter. The second floor was closed.
The food was only so-so and the service was awful (due to lack of staff)
One of the best beer lists in the DC area, along with a menu that never disappoints.
Nice decor and theme. Enjoyed the trivia cards on the table. Seating is a little crowded. Waiter was a little weird but my food and drink were great.
We were not a big fan of this restaurant - would not recommend to others.
The food was amazing. We had scallops, pork chop, and chicken with pasta. All three dishes were good.
Wonderful experience loved all of it and will definitely be back
Cozy and casual. Great comfort foods with a slight twist. Tasty and heary soups. Personal brick oven style pizzas with interesting toppimgs. Friendly service that made us feel like we were regulars. Extensive beer list and novel cocktails.
Poor bartender served as the wait staff, bus boy and greeter, so I could understand the slow service, however what I found my beer glass to be cracked he didn’t bring me another beverage nor did he remove it from our tab I will never go back again.
The food is good
Met with friends. Seated downstairs with staff that appeared to be trying, but were not attentive enough. While I will probably go back as the location is a favorite of my group of friends, but I was not impressed this visit.
The food was fantastic and the staff was very friendly.
A good variety of freshly-made food and decent coffee.
This was our second visit to Bilbo Baggins, both times were for Brunch. We love the character of the place. The food is excellent and the menu features a lot of creative dishes to choose from. Our waiter was the best, offering recommendations and helpful comments without interfering too much with our natural conversation. The restaurant is close to the water and is an easy walking distance to the Torpedo Factory, which we visited after brunch. There is street parking as well as a pay to park lot directly across from the restaurant. We will definitely be back!
New to the area and came here on a whim. Loved the name. Casual, relaxed and warm atmosphere with an excellent craft beer selection. Some things I never heard of! Good was great and service was fast and friendly. Looking forward to making this a regular spot!
We had heard about Bilbo Baggins years ago and it was on our bucket list. So for my husbands birthday we did it. We loved it! Feliciano, our server was wonderful. The food was delicious, we had the lamb and the presentation was beautiful. We were very pleased that a parking lot was right across the street. We will certainly be back!
Overall a disappointing experience. Had a reservation but got seated in the front room across from bar, not upstairs, which felt like dining in a bar....nothing special. My salmon was thin and dry, not cooked 'medium' as promised. The line meringue pie was a melted mess on a plate, and the two other desserts we tried were blah. Wine menu out of date...two different choices we made were out of stock, which is a bad track record I think. The waitress could not answer basic questions about the food. Won't be back!
Not great. Food fair.
This was a great place. Large beer and wine selection. The food was delicious. I ordered the cedar plank salmon; it had an incredible ginger mango sauce. I went for lunch but will definitely go back for dinner or brunch.
We had a great experience at Bilbo Baggins Cafe. The food was very delicious, and the best part was the friendly, attentive service. They were also very kid-friendly.
Great food and friendly, quick service! Loved the decor and cozy, casual atmosphere.
It used to be a great restaurant . It seems to have become a bar that serves food — if you make the
Mistake of wanting to eat there.
Always enjoyable; great food and service. We love the neighborhood feel!
The salmon and crab benedict was delicious. The wait staff was attentive. The restaurant has probably seen better days but at least the food was good.
With reservation, still had to wait longer than should have for someone to seat us. Food was okay-good. Our Server was not good and could care less. Practically got into an argument, being defensive, with the people sitting next to us as they were dissatisfied with his service too. Used to live in NoVa years back and dined here before. Will probably pass on dining here on any future trips to DC/Old Town.
It's been many years since we dined here and looked forward to going again. We didn't realize this restaurant no longer is the same place. It's a bar that serves mediocre food. The food was low quality. Mixed salad is literally a pile of lettuce. Onion soup was like water. No bread I served here any more (remember the raisin bread) but server offered to bring some for charge of $1.50 so we did. They toasted two pieces of rye bread. Seriously. Duck was like rubber. Fish was dry and tasteless. Service was scarce. Needed to flag down server for everything. Tables are uncomfortable bar tables with stools. No regular tables. We should have left when we walked in. We were surprised at ambiance but it was late and we thought we would give it a chance. Big mistake. If you were a fan many years ago it's sad to learn it's gone. RIP Bilbo Baggins. We miss you.
Food was super salty and not that great. Kids meals were way over priced.
A huge disappointment, not as represented online. Server not well versed in menu. Pork loin, in particular, was very tough, dry, and tasteless. Poor wine selection by the glass.
Food was terrible and overpriced. Did not try the bar, so this place may be okay for drinks. Do not come for food.
Awesome. Very nice.
Average, overpriced breakfast. The menu items looked appealing by their description. Unfortunately, the food arrived cold and trending on the tasteless side. $75 later for breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children, we had to grab bagels at Panera for our still hungry kids.
Great pizzas and a range of great local and international beers.
