Service was good, drinks were delicious but it was way too loud (could not talk with people at other end of table) and the food was disappointing across the board...would not recommend. Tough meat, tough local mushrooms, sauces too heavy and veg burger was not good.
This place has such potential. The supervisor was fantastic, he sat us quickly and ensured we had water. He was very friendly and was seen busing tables. But our waitress was not so great. It wasn't noisy, but I could barely hear her talking to me. It seemed like she would disappear from the dining room for extended periods of time and when she came back, she was empty handed. The only time I felt like I want looking for her was when we were eating, then she came to check on is twice.
Then the food, my wife had the risotto which she enjoyed. I had the steak, can't remember the name, but it was the cheaper of the two choices at $26. Asked for medium, and it was closer to rare, not really a problem. The steak was very chewy though and had an over-powering mushroom taste. I don't mind mushrooms, but that's all I could taste. The sides weren't anything to write home about either.
Don't think we'll go back.
As usual, the food was great. It is frustrating when requests are not honored. My wife told the waitress to put my order in, I would be there in 15 minutes. I made it there in 12 minutes. As I sat down, my wife's dinner was being served. I still had to wait another 10 minutes to get my dinner. That required me to eat fast so I woul not be late for the Pittsburgh Penguins game. Nothing comes between me and my Penguins. The waitress was nice enough. Her tip would have been bigger had my request been honored.
Recently renovated with a modern sleek feel. The menu is eclectic and should have something for the true foodie to a basic meat and potatoes type. They have improved the lunch service so you can be in and out more quickly. Food is very good. Wait staff is experienced.
I was at the restaurant on 10/26/17 with a special request for gluten free menu/options. The menu had plenty of items marked GF. However the food was NOT gluten free! I ordered the lamb burger and asked for it to be prepared gluten free, the plate was delivered to the table with a regular wheat bun. I asked the waitress if this was gluten free, she responded YES! then she said she would confirm with the kitchen, it in fact was NOT gluten free. THEY DID NOT EVEN OFFER TO REPLACE THE FOOD, NEVER TOOK IT BACK TO THE KITCHEN AND EXPECTED ME TO PREPARE MY OWN BURGER. she brought out two slices of GF bread and hovered over top of me until i took the burger off of the wheat bun and placed it on the GF bread. the burger had melted cheese which pulled much of the wheat bread with it. UNACCEPTABLE BY ALL STANDARDS. this was a business dinner with a prospective client and i was not in a position to argue with the waitress regarding how poor the service of the establishment was. there was no offer to replace the food (didnt even take it back to the kitchen to replace the bun), reduce costs or even an apology for the major inconvenience. I sent a letter via the restaurant website and have heard no response, i asked for a manager to call to discuss elevating this complaint, i have not gotten a reply.
We went with another couple before the Penguins Florida game. The ambiance was great, when we got there at 5:45 it was almost empty and did not get crowded at all during our meal. Our waitress was charming and attentive and took care of us. However, the service was very slow, it took almost 45 minutes for us to get our meals and the place was not crowded at all. I have been there before and this is a chronic issue with the Bigelow Grille but their location close to PPG Paints arena makes it the best option for meal other than the Carlton.
The first thing I noticed was how much it smelled like a parking garage. When we arrived there was 1 person working the floor. It took forever to get drinks. Food was decent, minus the hair we found in multiple meals. When more people showed up it became unbearable in the restaurant. You could even hold a conversation it was so loud.
The food was great. I really enjoyed the scallops. My sister enjoyed the chicken with succotash. It was great to eat good food in our hotel prior to the Ed Sheeran concert and being so close to the venue. Our waiter was great but only thing I dislike was overhearing another waitress badmouthing the potential influx of customers due to the concert. It was really disheartening to hear that not only as a concert goer or as a patron of the restaurant, but as someone who's job is caring for others. It was a great experience other than her!
I was very disappointed with this trip to the Bigelow Grille. We had visited about 8 months ago and it was wonderful. This time it was awful, and I was so embarrassed because I told my friends how good it was. The hostess took our drink order -- 45 minutes later our drinks hadn't come. I asked the hostess who was mortified that they hadn't come yet and said "they will be on us." Our food finally came and the food runners had no idea of who was to get what. And the food was mediocre. I had meatballs and two others had mac and cheese. When the bills came, we had been charged for the drinks that the hostess said would be comped. So I had to flag down a manager to get that straightened out. Drinks where put on the wrong bills. It was a disaster. Our server was very nice but very inattentive. Other than being with friends, the meal was a disaster, and I won't go back.
I made a reservation for six friends at the Bigelow Grill prior to a concert at PPG Arena. The reservation was for 6 pm. The concert started at 8 pm. We were greeted when we arrived, on time, and seated in a separate room. It was as if we were put in a separate restaurant. We were neglected. It took the waitress 10-15 minutes to even acknowledge us. She took both our drink and food orders together. We waited. Finally five dinners arrived. She forgot the sixth dinner. It arrived much later, after everyone else was done eating. To the Grille's credit, they comped that meal. We asked for more water; it never came. We waited for our checks then waited for them to be collected. Finally we chased her down to pay. On top of all this the food was just okay.
We ordered three dinners before a Penguins playoff game. One meal was very good, one average and one won't be repeated. We were served after a very long wait which has never happened before. The restaurant was not crowded. We assumed there was a staffing problem for the evening. Our waitress was very nice and professional.
I have had several meals here with very good results. This dinning experience was not consistent with my other visits.
Our food was good but definitely over priced considering the menu options. Service could have been much better which was disappointing due to the fact that we identified 3 servers with only up 6 tables during our dine. Obviously one server could have handled that
We waited 10 minutes for a server to greet us. She was very sweet but had no menu knowledge. She asked how I would like my eggs cooked with the frittata. When I pointed out the frittata is an egg dish similar to an omelet she went back to the computer and let me know I was correct. 15 minutes after we ordered she let us know it would be another 5 minutes. It was 10 minutes before our food came. My frittata was runny on top with pools of egg white and burned on the bottom. I told her I could not eat it like that and I would go for the breakfast bar since I'd had to wait so long for this as it was. The food from the breakfast bar was delicious, but I really was looking forward to the lower calorie and fat option. We were very surprised that there was no management intervention with us sitting for more than 30 minutes without food and then I sent mine back. A very poor experience.
Service was horrible. After being seated we waited 10 min. When waitress finally came to our table she immediately asked for our food order w/o getting us a drink or appetizer. I ordered a filet mignon medium rare and it came out nearly raw. I will never go this restaurant again. I read a review similar to the I am giving and should have listened. This restaurant needs a complete overhaul.
Bigelow Grille should be in every conversation about best restaurants in Pittsburgh. The food is extraordinary, fresh and always prepared in an innovative but subtle fashion. The freshness is evident and the focus on local sourced is wonderful. The menu leans on local food culture in heady fashion. The cocktail menu is a high mark. The wait staff is attentive and caring. I took the family for a Easter and every aspect was a joy.
Menu is varied and more than adequate. Brussel sprouts were the best I've ever had. Bartender Dean was excellent. Waitress was ok, meal was slow coming out. The Scallops were great. I'm mixed on how to rank this place. Some things were a solid 5, others were struggling to stay a 3. I would definitely recommend going there. Sit at the bar and have the brussel sprouts!!
The service was absolutely great.....The dinner salad was tasty, fresh....but the entre items were extremely over salted.The menu items sounded great as described in the menu...eggplant ragu, baked squash, etc....however, everything was so salty that it was almost inedible. ...same with the 2nd dish we ordered...a fancy mac N cheese...bUT too much of same saltiness & in this dish an overpowering smokey flavor.... it lacked depth of flavor .... I wanted to enjoy & like the restaurant, however, if food is not good, I tend to Not return.... I could not recommend this restaurant for a dinner meal.
