Not a fan of the new seasonal menu, in which gluten-free is now the default rather than an option. (Vegan is ethically admirable but also is too dominant on the menu). For everyone except celiac & GI-immune disorder sufferers it’s a virtue signaling fad, and I’m distressed at the focus on attracting younger but culinarily misguided Gen-Zers. Been a patron since its founding, and loved the homage to Carolina low-country cooking (with the occasional NOLA nod). The fried chicken had been so shatteringly crispy that it was the stuff of my dreams—the only way I could stand chicken breast which elsewhere is dry and tasteless. The new rice-flour coating is hard and crunchy, though still tasty it is hard to cut through (as is the coating of the crawfish boudin fritters). Gluten-free fried and baked food will always be inferior in texture no matter how tasty. The inexperienced FOH did not provide anything sharper than a plain dinner knife unless requested (and even my husband’s dinner knife was cleared by the busser after the appetizer but not replaced). The red-peas-and-rice was bland (needed salt, not just heat) and the rice was mushy—perhaps because we dined at 8pm. (Should not have felt like end-of-service on a Saturday night). The sweet potato puree, OTOH, was overspiced. Most of their signature cocktails like Artillery Punch are gone. Cornbread is now similarly bland—no jalapeño, and fewer corn kernels than before. The very hot skillet in which it was served should have had a napkin attached for easier cutting at table. FOH is inexperienced—we were seated for dinner but only one of us was given a dinner menu—the other menu was for brunch. Took forever to get drinks we ordered. The cornbread should have arrived with our other appetizer, not with our chicken entree. I noticed the host and bartender were doing double duty as servers. And until later in the evening the noise level was off the chart—cross-table (a two-top) conversation was next to impossible.

Our water Aisha was the BOMB. She really went out of her way to make a birthday boy feel special and made our dining experience a great one to remember.

We were at Big Jones for brunch. We got to sit at the front window and watch the world walk by. The service was great, the bloodie was nice and spicy, the food was tasty. An overall great way to spend a Sunday.

We got outstanding service. The food was very good. Perhaps the best fried chicken in the city. The corn bread, fresh from the oven, was outstanding. The strawberry shortcake dessert was the best I've had north of Commander's Palace in New Orleans. My only complaints are that it was really loud inside and a tad pricey.

We went to celebrate a birthday. There was a birthday card on the table. At the end of the meal we were served a complimentary dessert of pralines and a dense chocolate mousse that was exquisite. The birthday guest was served a sparkling strawberry cocktail (prosecco?) We ordered sweet potato biscuits with a jalapeno butter that was very tasty. Entrees were blackened chicken with a salad, jambolaya for two and a mushroom dish with an utterly delicious carrot cream sauce. All of the food was delicious. The service was efficient and friendly. We will definitely dine there again.

We have dined at Big Jones over the years, sadly it appears to have gone downhill. The items that we wanted were taken off the menu and there were no specials to be had. That left an extremely skimpy menu, I believe their focus was only on the weekends. The only highlight was our server Lucas who was marvelous. I guess it was good while it lasted.

Wallace, we appreciate your feedback! While our menus have changed and evolved over the years, the last few years especially as we adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace in order to be able to continue serving you, we believe firmly that Big Jones is better than ever, and our reviews reflect this. We begin new specials every Friday and when they sell out, they sell out, however throughout the week there are usually still some specials on hand. We did pare our menu back from 30 items to 24 to be able to focus on execution and manage our labor costs because we make every last item in house from raw ingredients. If there are any specific dishes you miss, feel free to email and let us know. We can't make any promises, but we value your feedback!

The food is uniquely prepared. The fried chicken is delicious with crispy, tasty breading. The skillet cornbread was popular with everyone in our party.

I had a table of 7 booked during Midsommer. Although we waited a bit to get seated, we were complimented with beignets. The patio was wonderful and so was the hearty food. I'd go back again!
