About Big Bowl-Reston

There’s really only one place for authentic Chinese and Thai, and that's Big Bowl. It all begins with the highest quality ingredients–naturally raised chicken and beef, heirloom pork, sustainable seafood and produce grown locally. Because Big Bowl believes that the best food is made from scratch, you can taste big, bold layers of flavors in every dish, from the curries right down to the dipping sauces.

Everyone raves about the pad Thai, our spicy dishes that are truly hot, and our create-your-own stir-fry–and for good reason. Every element adds up to big taste and takes our food to another level, be it a fresh squeeze of lime, fragrant herbs or the seared Thai chilies.

Big Bowl is so big on authentic flavors that even the ginger ale is made with fresh ginger root–from scratch, of course.

Tried to fit 5 people on 2/3rds of a four-top table. Original table tried to squeeze in 14 where 8 comfortably sat. Seemed fussy that I asked them to add 3 more tables. The restaurant was empty so no reason for such cramped quarters.

Hot and sour soup is so-so. Panang curry chicken was way too too spicy. Service was good. Big Bowl needs to improve the taste of their dishes. Seems to have gone downhill.

I love Big Bowl! My favorite is Kung Pao noodles, Terriyaki Chicken Fried Rice and Terriyaki Salmon. I like that I can tweak my meal based on dietary restrictions. The only change I'd like to see is............my food needs to arrive faster, especially during lunch hour on work days.

Went for birthday lunch. Good food, really good desert. Nice atmosphere. Time it took for meals to get out was a bit too long.

Ambiance and everything was fine, except that it was nearly impossible to get the attention of any waiter once we had ordered. I finally just ended up sitting there for about a minute with my hand raised in the air until finally the manager came and asked if we needed anything. Otherwise, it was fine.

Good food and good service, friendly causal atmosphere. A group sharing option is a very good way to try few dishes at once, and you will be very satisfied with generous portions. Nice selection of beers and cocktails to complete the dinner.

Good for a small group (say, up to 12) looking for a good, yet economical, place to eat where you can have a drink with your meal. Very friendly wait staff.

This is an upscale Asian restaurant mostly focused on Chinese and Thai food. The ambiance is good; but the food is overpriced.

Excellent service, good food and a nice vibrant atmosphere. I tried the Stir fry and selected my vegetables, protein and the sauces. The dish came out fresh and tasty. Would highly recommend if looking for a good eat for lunch. Also they make fresh ginger ale which is pretty good as well and definitely worth a try. Will go again!

I've lived in Minneapolis, MN for most of my life and just recently moved out to DC. Big Bowl has long been my favorite restaurant at home, and I'm so glad there is a location in the DC area! Although it's a bit of a hike from DC, it's definitely worth it. They have outstanding gluten free options, my favorite being Chicken Pad Thai and the GF Orange Chicken, as well as other menu options for those who aren't gluten sensitive. Hands down the best Chicken Pad Thai I've ever had - nothing compares.
PS - don't miss out on the flourless chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert. It's warm, chocolatey, and gooey on the inside.
All around good apps, drinks, entrees, and desserts!

Good mix of Chinese and Tai offerings. The hot and sour soup was chunky and flavorful. I requested a table in a quieter spot, and we got just that. The waiter was pleasant and attentive. We will go back for another date night in the not-so-distant future.

Took our 4 and 6 year old for dinner and they (and we) loved it! The choose your own veggie bar for stir fry was a hit. It's a little noisy so kids fit right in!!

Would recommend for family night out.

I met some friends for dinner at Big Bowl. I had read reviews which were 4/5 stars but since one of my friends recommended it, I agreed. The service was very good, and the noise level was comfortable enough that we could carry on conversation. There was enough space between seating groups that our conversation was relatively private.

However, the food was "okay." Not bad but nothing great. I had the Pad Thai with shrimp- it was fine but had a very different flavor to it that I did not enjoy. The serving was ample, however, and I could have taken home enough for a second meal.

My friends had Chinese dishes that they thought were fine- again, nothing special but certainly adequate. I would not rush here again but I don't have anything against the place.

Big Bowl is reliable, and can be a really quick dinner. We were a group of friends who wanted to spend some time together, and the restaurant was less than half full, so our server's early attempts to serve us quickly were a bit unwelcome. She figured us out after a while and we had a pleasant meal.

Had wanted to try this place since I first saw it and walked across to look at the menu in their window. Took my teenaged kids there and had a great meal and a great time. Lots of good choices on the menu so we coordinated our orders and shared...everything we got was really good. Our waiter was great, we were seated and served quickly, there was a good mix of couples, families, groups of friends...all in all, a really enjoyable experience. Highly recommend.

They're keeping the bar high at Big Bowl. Some interesting new dishes and the old favorites make this my "must dine" spot when I'm in Reston from the West Coast. Can't think of a trip in the last ten years when I haven't had at lease on dinner there...

I love the food. I was able to have a second meal the next day from my leftovers. If you order something spicy you better prepare yourself for a fire in the mouth. The place is busy and noisy. My table was sticky and my chair wet. Service is great for such a busy place, you just have to be careful not to run into the waitstaff because they wear all black and blend in with the backdrop. I visit the area annually and always look forward to my meal.

Although we've met here before for lunch with former work colleagues coming from Md. and Va., we have decided not to return - at noon the noise level was so high we couldn't hear each other talking, the waiters were running ragged trying to keep up with customer demands, and we had to question whether two of the meals delivered were actually gluten free because of a bad experience during our last visit. Three out of the six were happy with their meal selection/quality - I loved my Thai beef with basil - and two were just "okay" with their selection. The waiter was really helpful, but it did take a while to have our meals delivered once we placed our orders.

The food is reliable. Anything marked on the menu as spicy/hot is really, really hot. That limits the menu selections if you don't like very hot food. Service can be hit or miss, but it was fine the night we were there. Since they removed all of the Asian-inspired décor a few years ago, the restaurant looks like a Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn. Very blah. We were there on a Saturday night and there were a lot of empty tables. However, they were telling people without a reservation that there was a long wait.
