Big 4 never disappoints. I love the old SF feel and decor. The menu is solid, while not extensive. I usually have the filet. Service is attentive and pricing is as expected for Nob Hill.

Love going here
The Big Four is a block from our apartment. I don't go here enough. If I had it my way, I would stop in all the time. It is wonderful, old San Francisco. The bar is terrific. You can stop by for a casual drink or go for the finest of occasions. There is a live piano, not found most places anymore, and it is simply delightful. Maybe this is not the kind of place that would appeal to those who like to wear sweatshirts and old jeans and be loud. This is a dignified place, where the sound is more absorbed than bouncing off the walls. It is warm and cozy, in addition to being luxurious. This last time, we went to dinner for a special occasion and were treated with that extra special-occasion touch. Service was excellent and we felt very taken-care-of. An apology for one of our guests who was a bit loud for the atmosphere, but he loved the evening. I feel a warn attachment to this place and hope that it never leaves and that the ambiance never changes!

The ambiance was perfect! We stayed next door at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins, so we just walked a block to the Big 4. I was on a very low carb diet, and their food met my needs deliciously. The lighting is gorgeous. The wood paneling is elegant. The bartendar was old school and very classy. We sat at the bar and had fish entrees. Pefectly cooked! Great salads.
I really LOVE this place and can't wait to go back. It was jumping around 6:00 PM on a Friday, but it was not so noisy that you could not carry on a conversation. A friendly group was there.
I can still taste that perfectly grilled salmon. YUM!

This is old school San Francisco dining. The menu is traditional and well executed. We had steaks, cioppino, and salmon, and everyone was happy.

The ambiance was excellent. I had their classic pot pie and was delicious , but I wish the waiter would have asked me if I wanted him to scoop it out of the pastry pot on to a plate . I would have told him no, ruined the excitement of eating the lovely pastry at my leisure out of the pastry dish. He tossed it like a salad and the pastry was then soggy.

I had dinner at Big 4 with a group of friends during a "girlfriends' weekend away" in San Francisco. We loved the atmosphere - dark green booths, live piano music, candles and flowers on the table, and white tablecloths. The service was professional and attentive and the cocktails were classic and strong. We all enjoyed the warm sourdough bread and our starters, especially the delicious soup of the day (tomato bisque) . My friend thought her filet mignon was cooked to perfection and was tender and flavorful. The rest of us had fish and both kinds were fresh and well-seasoned. It was a very nice restaurant for a date, special occasion, or evening with good friends.

Great French onion soup. Cozy, old historical spot wonderful for a special night out. Caught a show across the street at Marines Memorial right after dinner. Beet salad and salmon for dinner. Perfect.

Easy to talk and enjoy your meal.
I had a beet and burrata salad and steak tartar, both wonderful.

Always a treat. Jackie was amazing as always. We lucked out getting her. The place is just genuine San Francisco. Old school fancy restaurant. I can always recommend the Bug 4 for an SF experience.

Service was outstanding! Julie was very attentive to us though at the same time allowing us to enjoy a nice dinner together. The food and drinks were all amazing. We had an appetizer and drink in the bar in the late afternoon and then returned for a fabulous dinner. We were not rushed which made for a great anniversary celebration. Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Nostalgic SF decor was amazing, as was the food and wine list! Our group had the oysters and beets & burrata to start, then the cioppino, chicken pot pie, and ribeye steak–all delicious! Four hours, 2 bottles of wine, and 3 desserts later, we finally called it a night. It was a wonderful dinner meeting a friend from out of town, and Big 4 was the perfect place.

The wine list was outdated - we tried to order 3 different wines and they kept bringing those same wines but different years. Food was mediocre at best. Took a long time to get someone’s attention to get seated, despite having a reservation. Overall not a great experience.

Beautiful, classic old-school San Francisco restaurant but unfortunately the meal was only average at best. Last year there was a very nice rack of lamb on the menu replaced this year with lamb chops that were chewy and not very well prepared. The fish dishes were good! Profiteroles were fabulous! Service was attentive. Next time we will likely do the bar menu and save a fortune ..... the bar and piano are so special.
Breakfast was marginal.

We have been coming to Big 4 for a long time. Christmas Eve dinner was a complete disappointment . This year they had a Very limit pre fixed Menu, over priced ( definitely not worth $145 per person. May be $95 or at the most $115. No more!) Salads did not look like they were prepared by a Proffecional Chef, did not look appetizing at all, lamb chops where the size of the walnut with a t-bone in the middle, the main course was barely warm, the desert did not even look or tasted like it was maid same day. With two cocktails and gratuity our bill was close to $500 and it felt like money been thrown away. I WILL NOT GO BACK FOR SURE! If you see pre fix menu - walk away!

Disappointing. We booked a Christmas brunch. Holiday decorations were spare. There was initially nobody present to greet us. After being seated, it was 10 min before anyone greeted me or offered me so much as a coffee the server (or busboy) who finally did acknowledge me was brusque, telling me to “Please wait” when I ordered a mimosa. The food (we ordered eggs Benedict with salmon, pancakes and yogurt with berries) arrived st different times. The eggs were goopy and cold, partially congealed on the soggy English muffins. They were accompanied by a handful of crudely cut and undercooked fried potatoes. That’s it. The yogurt looked like someone had taken an ice cream scoop of berries and popped it onto a plate with a couple spoons of blueberries. The pancakes were better, but not much better. Perhaps the regular staff were away for Christmas so we good the B team? Bummer.
