Every main dish at our table was superb. Love the historical value of the restaurant and bar as well.

Service was outstanding! Julie was very attentive to us though at the same time allowing us to enjoy a nice dinner together. The food and drinks were all amazing. We had an appetizer and drink in the bar in the late afternoon and then returned for a fabulous dinner. We were not rushed which made for a great anniversary celebration. Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Nostalgic SF decor was amazing, as was the food and wine list! Our group had the oysters and beets & burrata to start, then the cioppino, chicken pot pie, and ribeye steak–all delicious! Four hours, 2 bottles of wine, and 3 desserts later, we finally called it a night. It was a wonderful dinner meeting a friend from out of town, and Big 4 was the perfect place.

We enjoy going there for special occasions because it is quiet and one can carry on a conversation without yelling. Love the chicken pot pie and oysters Rockefeller.

The wine list was outdated - we tried to order 3 different wines and they kept bringing those same wines but different years. Food was mediocre at best. Took a long time to get someone’s attention to get seated, despite having a reservation. Overall not a great experience.

Beautiful, classic old-school San Francisco restaurant but unfortunately the meal was only average at best. Last year there was a very nice rack of lamb on the menu replaced this year with lamb chops that were chewy and not very well prepared. The fish dishes were good! Profiteroles were fabulous! Service was attentive. Next time we will likely do the bar menu and save a fortune ..... the bar and piano are so special.
Breakfast was marginal.

We have been coming to Big 4 for a long time. Christmas Eve dinner was a complete disappointment . This year they had a Very limit pre fixed Menu, over priced ( definitely not worth $145 per person. May be $95 or at the most $115. No more!) Salads did not look like they were prepared by a Proffecional Chef, did not look appetizing at all, lamb chops where the size of the walnut with a t-bone in the middle, the main course was barely warm, the desert did not even look or tasted like it was maid same day. With two cocktails and gratuity our bill was close to $500 and it felt like money been thrown away. I WILL NOT GO BACK FOR SURE! If you see pre fix menu - walk away!

Disappointing. We booked a Christmas brunch. Holiday decorations were spare. There was initially nobody present to greet us. After being seated, it was 10 min before anyone greeted me or offered me so much as a coffee the server (or busboy) who finally did acknowledge me was brusque, telling me to “Please wait” when I ordered a mimosa. The food (we ordered eggs Benedict with salmon, pancakes and yogurt with berries) arrived st different times. The eggs were goopy and cold, partially congealed on the soggy English muffins. They were accompanied by a handful of crudely cut and undercooked fried potatoes. That’s it. The yogurt looked like someone had taken an ice cream scoop of berries and popped it onto a plate with a couple spoons of blueberries. The pancakes were better, but not much better. Perhaps the regular staff were away for Christmas so we good the B team? Bummer.

Ok, holiday eve dining is generally risky but even with modest expectations this Christmas eve dinner was a disappointment - especially for the price. First we were seated in an isolated private room with 2-3 other tables, not in the main dining room. No warning of this and no choice once we arrived - would not have booked had we known. Second, food was just so-so but at the price changed and only with 3 choices per course, this should have been spot on. Only plus was service, giving consideration for level of activity. Bottom line, could have been a nice choice for a holiday gathering but fell way short. Not something to try again.

We dined on Christmas Eve to a pre-fixed menu and price. This was made known to us before hand. We would have liked to have a few more entre choices. Service was a bit slow but waiter (Ron) was very attentive and congenial. Very near Grace Cathedral which is nice for Christmas Eve service. We will dine there again.

We came early and were seated!!!! If that wasn't enough we were fortunate enough to have Ron Henggler as our server. We had Ron last Christmas Eve and were so fortunate to have him this year as well. We hope to have him when we return next Christmas Eve (and the nights in between as well!)

Christmas Eve dinner was lovely. Food was delicious and interesting.
A bit pricey- one glass of wine should have been included at that price.
Waiter either forgot us or ignored us for the first five+ minutes but more than made up for it once we were in his radar and I pointed it out.
Festive, clubby atmosphere.

I gave this restaurant 4 stars. The food was delicious and it is a very comfy location to have dinner. Really has that old feel of long gone diners of yore.

We went to this restaurant making reservations on Open Table, on Christmas Eve. Being under the impression it was the menu posted on Open Table, we were hit with sticker shock, after being given a different "Christmas Eve" menu as our only choice. A three course pre-fix menu at $145.00 per person!! If you wanted wine pairings, add another $30.00 per person! Yes, Christmas Eve is a special occasion, but paying over $400.00 (including tip) for two people is a bit reaching considering what we got for our money. And, being Christmas Eve, try getting into any other San Francisco restaurant without a reservation! Impossible. So we swallowed hard and accepted our fate.

The food was very good, however, lessoned learned! Check Big 4 ahead of time to insure whether you have a choice of menu or not. I noticed other restaurants do this as well.

Open Table suggestion: Post holiday menus informing members of their choice of regular or pre-fixe , so we can make our own decision where we dine!

Salad was meager, entrée was reasonably good lamb chops, dessert was terrible, it was supposed to be a pear tart, but it was very sugary, mealy, and bland. It tasted like it was at least three or four days old. Not at all special given the remarkable cost. The Christmas eve fixed price of $145 for the three course meal was unfortunate. We will not be coming back.

The Big 4 is part of a dying breed of restaurants that caters to adults who act like adults. It’s low lighting, tasteful Decour, and green leather seating Harkins to the age of fine dining many of us missed out on.

The food is good, although not exceptional. And I wish the waiter have been more friendly and less surly, but the overall atmosphere and quiet overcame even those small problems

Will not return. After many years of attending this restaurant. Worst experience ever. The service was extremely rude and slow. Our waitress was beyond rude and ignored our table and her comments to my wife were insulting. I ended up asking an associate waitress to followup on our order. My wife has a serious medical diet. I had requested a bake potato weeks in advance. In previous dinning here, this was not a problem. Bake potato is the only vegetable she can eat. I even called the restaurant the day before regarding and confirming this request. When we ordered our dinner we were told the bake potato was not available. As an option she was served uncooked sliced potatoes that were cold and not edible. No one at the restaurant seem to care. This place has really gone down hill. We are a family with a long association with the Big 4 families and this place is not representative of their reputation of high standards.

We were dissapointed with some of the food - the Oysters Rockafeller were bad - 1 of the 3 was edible - the other 2 had a horrible taste. In keeping with the not so good seafood theme: the Cioppino had very little flavor - the fish was so strong it was inedible, the lobster was overcooked and tasteless, the shrimp was decent and the mussels were good. How can you do that in one pot??
The whole chicken entreee was AWESOME - prep was perfect and the presentation was lovely.

Waiter has a bit of an attitude - the manager came over to see what went wrong and although he said he was sorry - he just had to add: No one else complained! - Just bad form for an expensive restaurant - or any service professional, for that matter.

This is beautiful restaurant with a great bar and a terrific piano player, Sue. However, it is very poorly run. It is impossible to get through on the phone and messages are rarely returned. This is an intentional policy and should be rescinded. Patrons and servers wholeheartedly agree this is more than foolish and bad for business. Answer your phone!!!!!

I enjoyed the new December menu with an entree of Swordfish Arrabbiata and a glass of Tuscan blend IGT. I was seated at a nice table that wasn't crowded next to other larger parties of diners. My waitstaff was attentive to my needs. I will go back again. I was attending a concert at the Masonic a block away.

A classy time wrap without the dust or the stains. The cozy feeling of a private club without the snobbery -or the club membership. The Big 4 has old San Francisco decor and a priceless location , IMO. Excellent service. Superlative desserts. And a soft background of a live piano that night playing Christmas tunes in a non intrusive manner.
