We were dissapointed with some of the food - the Oysters Rockafeller were bad - 1 of the 3 was edible - the other 2 had a horrible taste. In keeping with the not so good seafood theme: the Cioppino had very little flavor - the fish was so strong it was inedible, the lobster was overcooked and tasteless, the shrimp was decent and the mussels were good. How can you do that in one pot??
The whole chicken entreee was AWESOME - prep was perfect and the presentation was lovely.

Waiter has a bit of an attitude - the manager came over to see what went wrong and although he said he was sorry - he just had to add: No one else complained! - Just bad form for an expensive restaurant - or any service professional, for that matter.

This is beautiful restaurant with a great bar and a terrific piano player, Sue. However, it is very poorly run. It is impossible to get through on the phone and messages are rarely returned. This is an intentional policy and should be rescinded. Patrons and servers wholeheartedly agree this is more than foolish and bad for business. Answer your phone!!!!!

I enjoyed the new December menu with an entree of Swordfish Arrabbiata and a glass of Tuscan blend IGT. I was seated at a nice table that wasn't crowded next to other larger parties of diners. My waitstaff was attentive to my needs. I will go back again. I was attending a concert at the Masonic a block away.

A classy time wrap without the dust or the stains. The cozy feeling of a private club without the snobbery -or the club membership. The Big 4 has old San Francisco decor and a priceless location , IMO. Excellent service. Superlative desserts. And a soft background of a live piano that night playing Christmas tunes in a non intrusive manner.

Fantastic ambiance.

Mediocre food (not prepared as ordered, not notably flavorful, not good). Service to match food (missed order components).

The ambiance was great. We went here for dinner prior to a holiday party that was occurring nearby afterwards. The chicken pot pie was outstanding and they help split it up for us since we were sharing it. Everything was excellent however it was a little slow in getting/paying our check at the end of dinner.

Returned to the Big 4 on a recent trip to SF. The atmosphere is old sf with dark woods and paneling. Service and food were excellent.

Exactly what we expected after a show at the Masonic. Lovely old-school room and bar, great service and good food. The cioppinno, pot pie and steak were good (but not adventuresome). But that is kind of the point- they delivered on what we expected. My teenage boys loved it, they totally got the vibe. Worth a trip.

My family ate here for Thanksgiving. It was an amazing experience and I can't recommend them enough. Our waiter's timing was perfect. He gave us enough time to finish each course and letting enjoy our food and company but was always there for the next course or to get us anything we needed. If I lived in SF, I would definitely visit more for special occassions.

No surprises here---The Big 4 is reliably good in every way. Quality food, excellent wine, comfortable tables where one can speak without sharing the conversation with one's neighbors and vice-versa, and outstanding service. Whether it's a meal with friends, a family event, or a celebration, you can't go wrong here. Expensive? For our budget, yes. But for once in this ridiculously overpriced city "you get what you pay for". . .and then some.

I booked dinner here because we were headed to a show at the Masonic Auditoruim. I was delighted that the bar offered hard cider. The pianist was wonderful. The waiters were quite attentive. The only complaint is that we told the woman at the bar that we had dinner reservations, and she did not come back to let us know it was time to be seated.

Absolutely the best. The ambiance is “clubby,” dark woods, white linen, black leather. But, what sets this place apart from most other restaurants is the table staff. These people are PROFESSIONALS. They set the standard for table staff. Bravo!

After a crazy week of really loud restaurants and overly creative food this restaurant was a blissful change. I'm an old lady with many eating problems and this menu filled the bill. My nephew, who is coping with the death of a beloved partner, ate everything he ordered. The service was notable. We had an excellent server and wonderful food. The ambiance was delightful and I have already recommended it to my sister when next she visits.

Their famous chicken pot pie is worth the price, and the bar and restaurant is quintessential old San Francisco. Don't miss cocktails in the cozy, lively bar. It was the perfect pre and post Grace Cathedral event place, just steps away! The expert wait staff made our evening even more special.

We have been there many times and always appreciate the elegance and beauty of a vintage building wonderfully preserved. The warm wood and glass interior is cozy while classy and the food is top notch. The service is what you would expect from a classy Nob Hill establishment and they will not disappoint you.

Wonderful pate was more like fois gras! Smoked salmon appetizer was huge and the wild King Salmon was perfection. Oh! that crispy skin!

San Francisco is such a superior food city. As we are ex-San Franciscans now living in So. Cal, it was such a wake up call as to how poor the food is in Orange Co.

Wonderful staff, as always. Unfortunately, they discontinued the daily specials menu (specifically, the beef short rib on Friday nights). The switch to Bison last year wasn't an improvement on the original, but it was still one of the best items on the menu. At the least, the kitchen should consider adding it as a normal menu item.
