Food is very good and fresh. I had the cioppino and it was served hot and fresh. My wife had the very think pork chop, yum!
The atmosphere is nostalgic, classy, funky!
Our waiter says he’s worked there 13 years! Says it all!

Great service and ambiance. Good comfort food and the waiters are very knowledgeable about the history of the Big 4.

Absolutely the best. The ambiance is “clubby,” dark woods, white linen, black leather. But, what sets this place apart from most other restaurants is the table staff. These people are PROFESSIONALS. They set the standard for table staff. Bravo!

After a crazy week of really loud restaurants and overly creative food this restaurant was a blissful change. I'm an old lady with many eating problems and this menu filled the bill. My nephew, who is coping with the death of a beloved partner, ate everything he ordered. The service was notable. We had an excellent server and wonderful food. The ambiance was delightful and I have already recommended it to my sister when next she visits.

Their famous chicken pot pie is worth the price, and the bar and restaurant is quintessential old San Francisco. Don't miss cocktails in the cozy, lively bar. It was the perfect pre and post Grace Cathedral event place, just steps away! The expert wait staff made our evening even more special.

We have been there many times and always appreciate the elegance and beauty of a vintage building wonderfully preserved. The warm wood and glass interior is cozy while classy and the food is top notch. The service is what you would expect from a classy Nob Hill establishment and they will not disappoint you.

Wonderful pate was more like fois gras! Smoked salmon appetizer was huge and the wild King Salmon was perfection. Oh! that crispy skin!

San Francisco is such a superior food city. As we are ex-San Franciscans now living in So. Cal, it was such a wake up call as to how poor the food is in Orange Co.

Wonderful staff, as always. Unfortunately, they discontinued the daily specials menu (specifically, the beef short rib on Friday nights). The switch to Bison last year wasn't an improvement on the original, but it was still one of the best items on the menu. At the least, the kitchen should consider adding it as a normal menu item.

Fabulous 17 foot panorama photo of San Francisco taken in 1865 from atop Nob Hill in the party room off the main dining area. Other photos in main dining room of the mansions originally on Nob Hill. The ambience of this restaurant is special.

Overall ambience and service was good as well as salmon and roasted chicken, however, it was strange the menu had NO prices listed. Server seemed curt when asked of the price for the halibut special. An exceptional restaurant should be transparent in pricing on menus as well as specials.

This was a highly recommended place. However, the service was not friendly at the reception. Service at the table was distant. The server didn’t come around enough and we where always waiting for her. I called ahead and informed them of our anniversary and the staff made no mention of it. The food was average and not worth the higher price. Almthofhnthe abionce was init nice the service runes the whole dining experience and we couldn’t wait to leave.

A wonderful meal in a beautiful setting with excellent service! One of the last truly old world dining experiences left in San Francisco!
Cell phones not allowed (hooray);
you can actually converse with your dining companions without having to shout over loud music, you just hear the piano quietly in the background. It’s 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!!

Understated elegance with fabulous waitress Julie. She was warm and made us feel like we were in someone's home. My friend had Chicken Pot Pie to die for. I had the chicken pate and the crab cakes. Profiteroles for dessert. Nice wines.
All Star restaurant. One of my patient Mr. Alistair Cooke host of Masterpiece Theatre always stayed at the Hotel when he was in SF. I can see why.

This is a VERY SPECIAL place that you will never forget. The food was good, but not great. But the decor, piano, fireplace, coat-room, beveled mirrors, cozy and luxurious atmosphere is AMAZING, and makes up for mediocre, overpriced food and unhurried, leisurely service. I would definitely eat here again.
My lobster bisque was just ok, and my husband's steak was overcooked and was accompanied by bizarre greenery that was inedible. But the strawberry/rhubarb crumble was delicious!

This is one of the old places of SF, known for the swells and old money crowd. Freshened back in 2012, there's a bit of wear but the old girl looks great. Elegant carved mirrors all over the place, lots of sparkle an twinkle.
Nice bar area and interesting cocktail menu. Good service.
Scads of green leather seating, the menu has lots of familiar foods, none all that exciting but very tasty and well presented.
Wonderful service.
Enjoy!

The Big Four is a favorite place for us--we love being there, the atmosphere, the piano, the waiters, the location, the valet parking. However, the food does not measure up to the rest. The butter lettuce salad was a thrown together thing. The sole that I was very happy to see on the menu was mediocre and not as good as Scott's Seafood. I can't why they have difficulty obtaining an excellent chef. I think they should have traditional fare to go with the established hotel and customers' expectations and the menu items should be exceptionally tasty and creatively well prepared but not far out creative, just mouthwatering good and artistically appetizing in appearance.

An old school traditional fine dining place that's hard to come by these days...dark and dinner clubby. A place you'd want to smoke a cigar (if you could). Georgette (our waitress) and all the staff were exceptionally pleasant and kept the vibe from being too stodgy. All the food and drink was great, one less star for the desserts...they were good but didn't match the rest of the meal.
