Four different private party rooms, the largest of which accommodates up to 50 seated, 75 for cocktails.
View Private Dining DetailsWe love the bar. Great drinks and energy. Particularly we are fond of the bartender Ty (Tyrone) Outstanding personality, knowledgeable and just plain fun.
When we are in town we always have an evening at the Big Four. We actually prefer to eat at the bar, though the lounge is lovely.
We were jet lagged and wanted a meal rather than an occasion but the food ambience and service was first class
Great, loved it
We enjoyed our meal at The Big Four, but there was a service issue. Out waitress disappeared part of the way through our meal. About 10 minutes after we finished, with plates yet to be cleared, we had to ask someone where she was. We were then told that she'd left work due to illness, and someone else was taking care of us. But actually, no one was taking care of us until we asked, not even to serve our wine.
We should have been informed that our server was leaving, and introduced to the person who was taking charge of our service. That didn't happen.
With a bill of nearly $400 with tip and drinks, and it being our wedding anniversary, that level of service is not good enough.
Easter buffet was ok. Platters were left to be emptied which made it look very unappealing. Food was ok, but they were very nice about offering to cook us some fresh food. The service was very good and the people working there were very kind.
We dined here for Easter Brunch and were not overwhelmed with the food selections. the ambience is wonderful and service was good but only offering a buffet brunch leaves something to be desired. For $75 you got a rather limited buffet, no drinks and of course you had to keep getting up and going to another room. Including a mimosa or bloody mary with the charge would certainly make the price more acceptable.
The food offered was good but a carving station, fresh shrimp, etc. would bring it up to a $75 caliber. Apparently there is a new chef trying things out, he should modify this idea.
This was a lovely Easter Brunch Buffet. We brought friends that have been in San Francisco since birth and had not heard of Big 4.
They loved it and will go back too.
A superb restaurant with outstanding food. Strongly recommendation ended.
awesome like always!! never go wrong!! dinner was great this is the place where I take my friends that come from abroad and that like good and fine dining
Order the Chicken Pot Pie!
It's a lovely restaurant with old-world charm - a place to relax and talk with family and friends. This is not a place to rush through your meal but linger with an after-dinner drink or coffee. Excellent evening!
As noted above, the food, service and ambience were superior. The beef dishes were tender and flavorful. The appetizers and salads were diverse. The service was excellent and the server ensured that we were fed and out of there in time to make our theater date. The walls of the restaurant were done in vintage walnut panels, adding to the elegance of the room. The prices were in line for the quality and ambience.
I really liked THE BIG FOUR,,,,,,,,nice bar also with piano music the night I was there. I also chose this restaurant because I was staying at The Fairmont Hotel, and the restaurant is only a 5 minute walk down the street. It is pricey compared to where I am from,,,, ,small town,,,,,,but the food was good,,,and so was the ambience,,,,,,,,,,so when in SAN FRANCISCO again, it will definitely be a stop.
We love the pot pie and wine list!!
From the minute we walked in you could feel the excellence, the only thing that was disappointing was having to leave. Overall top 5 restaurant experience in San Francisco. Very old school classic elegance but not uptight. Perfect for any occasion.
staying at hotel when traveling to San Francisco
Nice dinner, service a bit slow (at start)....& I don't like to be rushed; no one even gave us a cocktail/ wine list when we were seated. Server finally came by & gave us drink menu when I requested one. Service got better as meal progressed.
Had a wonderful breakfast Sat AM - terrific service & really great food.
Amazing experience, excellent food and classic SF vibes
As always, the Big 4 did not disappoint. Great steak, amazing halibut. Our waitress was attentive without being overly needy. Overall a lovely dining experience.
Big 4 is one of our all-time favorites. Been coming here for over thirty years. It's a real classic, and our waitress was downright terrific.
The Big 4 great things: 1. old school club-type ambiance; 2. interesting San Fran history surrounds with lots of fantastic photos; 3. fantastic fish selections and appetizers were delightful (enjoyed my steak tartar); 4. wonderful service - attentive without being annoying. We will be back!
Great food, service, wine list and cocktails. Classic restaurant charm.
Decor reminiscing if old world club, very cosy. Excellent service. Loved the live piano music. Unfortunately placed far....so had to listen to loud talkers on either side of me. Enjoyed the ciopino: good portion and tasty. Felt was overpriced though as it lacked that special kick. The house bread is excellent. The recommended zinfandel paired well with the ciopino. For the dessert, the big four bread pudding was a good portion, but a tad bland. Nice restaurant to recommend, just everything on the menu is about 15% overpriced. I live in Las Vegas so not being cheap here.
This restaurant is so under rated. It’s just delightful
Fabulous service! The menu was the right size, not too overwhelming but still a variety of options. Ordered the chicken pot pie (which has been on the menu since 1976!) and was so happy with it. Left in a food coma.
Fabulous all around, bar, dining room, food!
We were a group of six and a little apprehensive after the change in ownership at the hotel, but we were pleasantly surprised. The Big Four has maintained all of its traditional look and feeling. Food and service were terrific too. If you're looking for an special old-style San Francisco experience, this is the place.
This restaurant has great atmosphere - dark, clubby, old-fashioned, and it's quiet enough to have a reasonable conversation. However, the food was pretty ordinary for the price - the presentation was fine, but the tastes were not special in any way.
The waiter was perfect. Engaged in conversation with interesting bits of history as well. The food was superb.
Big 4 never disappoints. I love the old SF feel and decor. The menu is solid, while not extensive. I usually have the filet. Service is attentive and pricing is as expected for Nob Hill.
Love going here
The Big Four is a block from our apartment. I don't go here enough. If I had it my way, I would stop in all the time. It is wonderful, old San Francisco. The bar is terrific. You can stop by for a casual drink or go for the finest of occasions. There is a live piano, not found most places anymore, and it is simply delightful. Maybe this is not the kind of place that would appeal to those who like to wear sweatshirts and old jeans and be loud. This is a dignified place, where the sound is more absorbed than bouncing off the walls. It is warm and cozy, in addition to being luxurious. This last time, we went to dinner for a special occasion and were treated with that extra special-occasion touch. Service was excellent and we felt very taken-care-of. An apology for one of our guests who was a bit loud for the atmosphere, but he loved the evening. I feel a warn attachment to this place and hope that it never leaves and that the ambiance never changes!
Anniversary
Great ambiance and great service. Food was good too. Loungey old fashioned bar. Will return!
Historic hotel within Huntington Hotel, top of Nob Hill. Wonderful ambiance, piano player and violinist. Upscale
A cozy, charming old world style with great service and delicious food!
The ambiance was perfect! We stayed next door at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins, so we just walked a block to the Big 4. I was on a very low carb diet, and their food met my needs deliciously. The lighting is gorgeous. The wood paneling is elegant. The bartendar was old school and very classy. We sat at the bar and had fish entrees. Pefectly cooked! Great salads.
I really LOVE this place and can't wait to go back. It was jumping around 6:00 PM on a Friday, but it was not so noisy that you could not carry on a conversation. A friendly group was there.
I can still taste that perfectly grilled salmon. YUM!
This is old school San Francisco dining. The menu is traditional and well executed. We had steaks, cioppino, and salmon, and everyone was happy.
The ambiance was excellent. I had their classic pot pie and was delicious , but I wish the waiter would have asked me if I wanted him to scoop it out of the pastry pot on to a plate . I would have told him no, ruined the excitement of eating the lovely pastry at my leisure out of the pastry dish. He tossed it like a salad and the pastry was then soggy.
great food and service. A little pricey but beautiful presentation and very tasty.
I had dinner at Big 4 with a group of friends during a "girlfriends' weekend away" in San Francisco. We loved the atmosphere - dark green booths, live piano music, candles and flowers on the table, and white tablecloths. The service was professional and attentive and the cocktails were classic and strong. We all enjoyed the warm sourdough bread and our starters, especially the delicious soup of the day (tomato bisque) . My friend thought her filet mignon was cooked to perfection and was tender and flavorful. The rest of us had fish and both kinds were fresh and well-seasoned. It was a very nice restaurant for a date, special occasion, or evening with good friends.
Great French onion soup. Cozy, old historical spot wonderful for a special night out. Caught a show across the street at Marines Memorial right after dinner. Beet salad and salmon for dinner. Perfect.
