This was the worst service I’ve ever had in a restaurant in San Francisco in 8 years of living here. Too many things went wrong to even waste the time to explain.
This is such a classic old San Francisco restaurant that we always love to go to!! It's tucked away in Nob Hill.
We went for lunch and the menu was pretty limited. I got the chicken pot pie and the chicken was slightly undercooked.
The waiter had no idea about wine saying i’I gave up drinking so I don’t know’, but the bottles were $90+. If you don’t know by tasting, you should either learn by talking or send someone to the table who has an opinion. Really off putting.
Wonderful venue, wonderful meal. I heartily recommend this restaurant.
I came specifically for the Mac and Cheese....and was sad to see it was no longer on the menu. I ordered the Little Gem Salad (Iceberg wedge, bacon, bleu chesse) and it was lacking. The service, however, was perhaps the-over-the-top wonderful.
What a lovely, lovely place. I wish I could stop in every night! The Piano player is outstanding, steak is tender and delicious, and Martin + staff are welcoming and hospitable. Come here alone or with a group - the ambiance will take you back in time. Until next time, Big 4!
Thank you again for an amazing experience. After several stays at the Huntington Hotel I have come to appreciate the exceptional service and superb cuisine of the Big 4 Restaurant.
I took my best friend for his 21st birthday. Immediately when we walked in it was like entering a New York jazz club from a Hollywood film set. It was so beautiful and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him more impressed with my choice of restaurants. I will always go back!
Everything other than excitement
Elegant dining room, excellent food, very good service. I will return
Loved the restaurant. It was a great place to celebrate our anniversary.
Sat at our table for 10 minutes and nobody came over. Low energy -dull atmosphere. Old crowd
The food was fair at best. Very expensive for what you get. The atmosphere is old school 1900,'s, which is neat, but and the leather chairs are damaged and have been taped over. Really? Very tacky indeed. It is apparent that this has become a tourist trap it is no longer an Elegant establishment to dine at.
Go to the Fairmont
Excellent ambiance, service and food
We held a memorable little party at Big 4 and the staff helped us all along the way
The wait staff was wonderful. Attentive but not intrusive. I loved the piano playing in the bar...
Had a wonderful time. Waiter was extremely friendly. I have wanted to dine here for years and my friend and I were completely impressed by the food, service, and ambience.
We had impeccable service for our special birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. There is so much rich history here. Well worth the visit.
This place never disappoints, with the understated elegance, attentive service, ideal minimum lighting. It's a lunch indulgence that I wish I could enjoy more often!
I love this place. The atmosphere is so calming and "rich" but the service is friendly and fun. It's a great place for a special occasion or just to enjoy a perfectly made Manhattan.
Food is delicious. Service is exceptional.
Wonderful restaurant. Fabulous ambience, attentive servers & sublime food. Would definitely recommend. We stayed in the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins which is close by so the Big4 was ideal as it didn't involve any hill-climbing, lol.
Great dinner, great atmosphere!
Very friendly service and the breakfast was very good.
Thanks for our perfect time
Need to improve the food quality a bit, it's a bit pricy compared with the quality of the food
I like i would can back. The music atmosfere the servive are perfect. 👍
The ambience is great. Lovely interior decoration. Good service. The food was ok, a little high in price for the quality of it. The live piano playing really made the evening so enjoyable.
This used to be our go to restaurant for all special occasions and holidays. We knew the waiters by their first names (Felice), as well as the maitre D' (Derek) and the bar tender (Joe). Now, it's barely a shadow of its former self! It's gone downhill fast since they sold to the Scarlet Group. Hotel lobby looks like a boredlllo. The restaurant area was not in use. They only seated people at tables in the bar area - on a Wednesday night to be that empty, tells you something! The leather bench seat I was seated on had duct tape all over it covering a huge rip!! Tacky! And the food prices were through the roof considering the fare is mediocre and serving size teeters on the small side . Although the original Big Four was expensive, the food, service and ambiance was worth it! Sadly, not any more.
We overall did not like the service and attitude of 2 staff members that ruined our experience. Decor is very nice, food is good but service needs to be improved significantly. Not going back ever.
We made a reservation for 7:45pm and ended up waiting A HOUR for our table. The host told us it was just be a minute while the people at our table had not even gotten the check. The host did not apologize for the wait at lot. Our waiter ended up rushing us through our entire meal. We had stopped coming to the Big Four but we were willingly to give it another chance, however, we will not be returning.
Be aware that the restaurant itself is currently closed, and the bar has been turned into a makeshift dining room, with a pared down menu.
The food and service are still great, but, it's not its usual delightful self.
Thanks to the wonderful bar man, who saved our evening from being a complete disaster, when our booking couldn't be found.
We enjoyed everything. However, considering this should be a top restaurant I didn’t give 5 stars for two reasons.
Their online menu is out of date and considering the type of restaurant this is the waiter didn’t crumb the table.
The food was great, nice having a piano playing in the background. Tip the pianist. Little bummed the pork chop wasn’t on the menu but the lamb chops was just fine. Everything was good.
We had anticipated great things from this restaurant, which had been recommended to us. The service was indifferent verging on snooty, the bland chicken pot pie should be renamed potato pot pie for the lack of chicken not to mention the glutenous sauce and the wine list was practically inaccessible for those not willing to spend high. The final bill came to $150 for two for a main course, one side to share and a glass of wine. This restaurant was the one exception to the rule that eating out in San Francisco is a great experience. The Big 4 was very disappointing.
Apparently the main restaurant is undergoing renovations (not mentioned when I made the reservation on line.) So we dined in the cocktail lounge area. We were assigned a small table that was against the Maitre d's stand that was noisy, and were refused another table across the room that was not occupied the entire time we were at the restaurant. The food was quite good, but expensive for the quality. Our waiter was excellent -- friendly, informative, and efficient.
All in all, a nice dinner, but disappointing considering this restaurant's reputation.
A bit overrated. Be prepared to pay a lot .
Es war toll wie immer!
Small establishment with lots of old world charm. Small but well executed menu with live piano music as well.
We came on a Monday very late and still we loved it. But I’m sure it would be completely different in a weekend day. Pianist playing beautiful!!!
