Beautiful old school SF restaurant. Quiet enough to have a conversation. Superb service. Really wish their menu offered more plant based and seafood options. Lots - o- meat here.
They need more sea-based menu options.
I like this place. Old school. Classic. Comfort food. You feel like you are in a private club. Always reminds me of the Oak Room at the Plaza in New York. Awesome.
When I made the reservation I thought we would be in the restaurant, not the BAR. The tables are smaller & the bartender has too many people to take care of. Your form) to reserve) should state clearly whether it’s the bar or restaurant
The Big Four is an absolute cut above the typical big city restaurant. With amazing ambiance and fabulous people, the dining experience is both unique and of extreme high quality. Next time you're in SF for a special occasions, be sure that you make it happen at The Big Four.
Service is at a level that all restaurants should strive to match. Great evening all around.
We are long time patrons of about 30 years & still love all the Big 4 is in every way. There have been some rough patches at times with hotel management changes, however today’s cuisine is excellent. It is always a pleasure to be attended to by Ron Heggler.
Jackie along with the chicken pot pie were the super stars of our night at the big 4!
Great way to end a perfect day in the city!
Food Quality has diminished. I ordered "grilled oysters" and what I received was Oysters Rockefeller, which I did not want and did not like. The oysters were virtually raw.
We live this restaurant and celebrated my friends birthday. Everything was wonderful. Tx u so much. Holly
My red wine was poured in a small white wine glass and it was a very tiny pour. The salmon was super small and thin but very expensive. When fancy restaurants offer designer plates with a small amount of food they at least give you a thick piece. Mine was tiny and thin. It was placed on top of cabbage with sausage pieces. Never in my life have I ordered seafood on a bed of sausage ( this side dish wasn’t even listed on the menu) Not sure what the chef was thinking . Despite of all that, our waiter was very nice .
I've been dining at Big 4 for 20 years, have hosted many events there, and though it went down after the new owners purchased, it seems to be back. It's once again one of the top 5 restaurant experiences in SF.
Anyone who likes western history will enjoy this restaurant with all of the photos and old newspaper stories about the railroad barons. This is a dark restaurant in the old style with dark wood and low lighting. Even the ceilings are painted black. We had a lovely and attentive server. Our entrees were very good although it's hard to distinguish a chef when cooking steak and pork chops unless they are improperly cooked. Ours were properly cooked. One unusual and nice feature of Big 4 is that they have a relatively extensive and well priced half bottle list. We each enjoyed separate half bottles.
Always a treat. Chicken potpie always a must.
Restaurant not open. Bar only. Had to put two tiny tables together.
Very limited menu.
Outstanding experience in a historic setting. Great cocktails and menu featuring high-class dishes and high end drinks and food, all served by the most professional servers. Piano plays quietly and it is dark and intimate. Just a fantastic experience for an unforgettable meal.
Such a nice quiet room for a cozy dinner. I had the Chicken Potpie and it just as it should be! The puff pastry topping was buttery and excellent. There were tons of chunks of chicken and creamy broth. I would not change a thing! I wish I weren’t so full, I would have loved to have dessert here.
Definitely a place I will revisit next time in beautiful San Francisco.
This was the worst service I’ve ever had in a restaurant in San Francisco in 8 years of living here. Too many things went wrong to even waste the time to explain.
This is such a classic old San Francisco restaurant that we always love to go to!! It's tucked away in Nob Hill.
We went for lunch and the menu was pretty limited. I got the chicken pot pie and the chicken was slightly undercooked.
The waiter had no idea about wine saying i’I gave up drinking so I don’t know’, but the bottles were $90+. If you don’t know by tasting, you should either learn by talking or send someone to the table who has an opinion. Really off putting.
Wonderful venue, wonderful meal. I heartily recommend this restaurant.
I came specifically for the Mac and Cheese....and was sad to see it was no longer on the menu. I ordered the Little Gem Salad (Iceberg wedge, bacon, bleu chesse) and it was lacking. The service, however, was perhaps the-over-the-top wonderful.
What a lovely, lovely place. I wish I could stop in every night! The Piano player is outstanding, steak is tender and delicious, and Martin + staff are welcoming and hospitable. Come here alone or with a group - the ambiance will take you back in time. Until next time, Big 4!
The experience was nice overall. The thing that I didn't like was that I felt that they haven't read my booking message. I had to remind them that my husband has his birthday etc. We had a good time and everyone was polite ... but I didn't feel that it was a special thing.
Thank you again for an amazing experience. After several stays at the Huntington Hotel I have come to appreciate the exceptional service and superb cuisine of the Big 4 Restaurant.
I took my best friend for his 21st birthday. Immediately when we walked in it was like entering a New York jazz club from a Hollywood film set. It was so beautiful and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him more impressed with my choice of restaurants. I will always go back!
Everything other than excitement
Elegant dining room, excellent food, very good service. I will return
Loved the restaurant. It was a great place to celebrate our anniversary.
Sat at our table for 10 minutes and nobody came over. Low energy -dull atmosphere. Old crowd
The food was fair at best. Very expensive for what you get. The atmosphere is old school 1900,'s, which is neat, but and the leather chairs are damaged and have been taped over. Really? Very tacky indeed. It is apparent that this has become a tourist trap it is no longer an Elegant establishment to dine at.
Go to the Fairmont
Excellent ambiance, service and food
We held a memorable little party at Big 4 and the staff helped us all along the way
The wait staff was wonderful. Attentive but not intrusive. I loved the piano playing in the bar...
Had a wonderful time. Waiter was extremely friendly. I have wanted to dine here for years and my friend and I were completely impressed by the food, service, and ambience.
We had impeccable service for our special birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. There is so much rich history here. Well worth the visit.
This place never disappoints, with the understated elegance, attentive service, ideal minimum lighting. It's a lunch indulgence that I wish I could enjoy more often!
I love this place. The atmosphere is so calming and "rich" but the service is friendly and fun. It's a great place for a special occasion or just to enjoy a perfectly made Manhattan.
