Excellent dining experience. Our Waiter, Ali, was the best.
The restaurant is an easy walk from the Fairmont, which is why I chose Big 4. The waitress was outstanding, and the food was great. I loved the short ribs, probably the best I have ever had.
Quiet, slow paced dinner and bar area. The wood paneled walls, ample booth and table space makes this place perfect for a quiet, unrushed dining experience. While the price may be steep, it is because of the warm, inviting ambiance coupled with attentive service from the staff while not being overbearing in the least. We will definitely be visiting the next time we are near Nob HIll.
Food was good but not extraordinary enough to justify the high prices. Service was good.
Thank you for your feedback.
It’s very overpriced hotel food in a very dated setting. We ended up eating here because a reservation elsewhere fell through. I ordered a Caesar salad and asked to add chicken. The addition of chicken was an extra $11. The salad and presentation was mediocre at best. The piano in the bar was charming and this probably would have been a better choice for drinks. But those were ober priced as well.
This is not the place for lunch. Because they don’t serve lunch they serve bar food! But accepted our lunch reservation. When we arrived it took several minutes to be acknowledged by the wait staff. When they finally did they proceeded to set up a table in the bar. We thought we are have a nice Valentines lunch instead we got snacks!
Thank you for your time reviewing us
A wonderful evening. It was our wedding anniversary, and I can't imagine a better place to celebrate it next year.
Thank you for the high praise! We will see you soon.
Not very friendly service, great atmosphere and food.
Thank you for the review. Please give us a chance again. If we messed up we will make it up to you. If you feel you need to speak to someone please contact me at 415-771-1140 Martin.
This restaurant is a SHRINE. WE ADORE IT! We always feel like we’re on vacation when we dine here!!
Thank you for your feedback. It's always a pleasure!
Fabulous look forward to returning
Thank you for your review! We will gladly serve you again soon.
Best filet in town. Best dining room in town.
Excellent meal, great service, finally a good restaurant not going to the fix pris approach
Thank you for your feedback. We trying to open up to all possible categories and serve variety of diners.
Beautiful traditional upscale hotel restaurant. Quite expensive and while the service and ambiance live up to the cost, the food fell short in a variety of ways. Simple things like the bread offered in the bread basket was plain white in a city with lots of wonderful bakeries and delicious breads. The "warm" goat cheese salad came with a large disk of room temperature goat cheese, not warm at all. The pasta entree [ravioli in a cream sauce with wild mushrooms] was quite good but my wife's pork chop, while large and nicely prepared came on a plate with a few very uninspired brussel sprouts. When an entree is $50+, you expect a somewhat better, more complete and appealing plate. With a glass of wine, a salad and an entree, it is $75-$85 per person [or so] which is not surprising for a restaurant like this, but at that price point the food should be consistently delicious and appealing. I would not go back. For what it is worth, our waitress was perfect, attentive and helpful. It was the menu and the kitchen that fell short.
Breakfast was good but the portions were miniscule. I counted 6 small pieces of potato with my eggs. Definitely not a repeat.
One of my favorites for many years. Very nice atmosphere with a pianist.
I do wish for a broader menu as the Big 4 is basically steak house.
Hello Paul, Thank you for your feedback. Please check us out again as we provide daily specials every day and happy to accommodate your needs.
Ahead of my price range for the future $300 for four people seems like a lot without appetizers without desserts without even coffee or tea
Great ambience and service makes up for good (but not great) food. Setting and atmosphere in both bar and restaurant are hard to beat.
Thank you for your feedback Anton
drinks were great, filet was the best ever had, pot pie and tortellini delicious
Thank you for the stars and feedback
We love everything about the Big Four restaurant, the food, the service, the ambiance, the location. It is a must dining experience!
Dear RazzariB, Thank you for the stars and nice comments.
Met friends for dinner today n this old-San Francisco-style cozy spot. Service was great, food was traditional and comforting. Feels historic and inviting.
Hello Robin, Thank you for the high praise. We agree with you, the Big 4 is very cozy spot.
A San Francisco Classic!
Everything about our dinner at Big 4 was fantastic. The restaurant was warm and full of energy while the Piano player performed a lovely tune. We were seated right away in a half-round booth which we loved...we had a great view of the restaurant.
Our waiter ALI could not have been better, he was warm, fun, funny, and very knowledgeable of the menu.
Our drinks tasted fantastic and our food...OMG, the food, The chicken pot pie presentation was a show itself (Thank you Ali!) and the Filet Mignon and Cioppino were out of this world.
Our dessert was the fact that Joe Montana came in with his wife and a group of friends and sat one table away...we can now say that we had dinner with him!
We loved our experience and will be back soon.
Hello Veronica, Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed our food and service. We will see you soon again. We love our customers including Joe Montana and Ali makes feel everyone special.
We had a truly enjoyable dining experience from the food to the service.
Professional friendly service paired with excellent food (generous portions)and wine menu in old school dark wood atmosphere.... classic and can’t go wrong
Thank you for the high praise.
We love this spot!!! My only gripe is $50 per corkage is a bit insane!!!
Plus our waitress charged us 3 corkage fees and we only
opened two bottles.
That was a bit off putting but nonetheless, we shall return
again and again!
Hello MaureenR, Thank you for your feedback. Please contact us if you would like to review the charges. Otherwise we will see you soon again.
Love the Pot Pie!!
Thank you. We love to serve the Pot Pie too!
Great food. Great atmosphere. Great Service Very classy ambiance. Would definitely go again. The oysters rockefeller for appetizer were a bit of a let down. Otherwise, the entire dining experience was great.
Thank you for the feedback! We will look into our Oyster Dish. Please do see us again.
A SF classic that has stood the test of time. The place was full but the service was excellent. We had a wonderful dinner and were headed out but instead decided to sit down at the bar to listen to the piano play old and new classics while having an after dinner drink. What a great way to end the week.
Hello JeffRay, We could not agree more with you and appreciate the kind words. WE hope to see you soon.
We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was delicious,
Thank you for the praise!
Dinner with valued customer
Beautiful seeding and great service
it was ideal for the out of state guests, a San Francisco treat for all of us
Thank you for the stars!
Terrific night here, starting with drinks in the bar enjoying the beautiful piano music to dinner and birthday desert. Our server, Ali, is such a warm person and a very efficient server. Thank you to the kind young man who filled our water glasses attentively and always with a smile. Big 4, you are a gem.
Thank you for the feedback. See you soon again.
The classic pot pie is filled with chicken and a very nice crust. It could use some more vegetables. All dishes were well-prepared and excellently served. Entering the Big 4 with a pianist plays is an extra nice touch.
I am glad you enjoyed. We are looking forward to serving you again.
Food was ok.......service not great.......waited forever to get drinks.....wine opened......time between 1st course and entre was forever......just kind of missing something all around.......not bad.....but unfortunately just not great enough to come back to next time we are in the City!
Dear Kathy, Thank you for the feedback and we apologize if it didn't work out the way you wanted. Please give us another chance.
Our waiter Ron was great, he made our evening very enjoyable. We really enjoyed his knowledge and historical value of the restaurant and San Francisco, added value to our “Date Night”. The food was exceptional, ambiance superb and atmosphere delightful. Thanks
A great evening! Looking forward to our next visit!
Thank you and we are looking forward to serving you again.
We went here before an event at the Masonic Auditorium. The location is very convenient. The bar area is lively and crowded but restaurant area is quieter. Food was very good and well seasoned.
They burned sugar top on my creme brulee dessert which left an awful taste of burned sugar on my tongue the entire evening. The seating arrangement is quite uncomfortable for small parties such as two people. You would be left facing another couple the entire time. The table cloth was way too long and you can easily drag it down with your legs when someone tries to sit down. Menu has limited choices.
Thank you for the review and apologize for the dessert taste and unconfortable seating. Please let us know next time and we let you choose your seating.
New Years Eve Lots of people and only one bartender?
Thank you for your review.
Staff was too busy to talk to us because, I guess, of the busy bar service since we were 10 minutes early. One waiter actually told us to patient when we asked if we were in the right place to check in. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation, and our waiter knew we were going to a performance in 90 minutes, and yet, he seem to forget about us for long periods of time. We ordered Glasses 2 different white wines. The waiter brought mine in a little carafe, and, after pouring it into my glass, he proceeded to pour my husband’s choice from the bottle into that same carafe and then into his glass. I guess he felt that mixing our wines together would not make a difference. After he delivered our entrees, he did not check back in with us, but rather paid attention to other tables around us, carrying on long conversations with them. Maybe, they were preferred customers. So he missed out on us ordering coffee and dessert, which we would have had time for. My husband was kind enough to tip him 20% because it was a holiday. However, we wouldn’t make use of this restaurant again. Obviously, the bar is the better because the food was good.
Dear AnnH, Please accept my appology for how your night went in our restaurant. Please call us back if you would like to express your complain further. We would like you to join us again and not given up on us. Management. 415-771-1140
