Fabulous food. Service was super slow and a little sloppy but everyone was friendly. Food was outrageously good. My husband and I each had different chicken dishes and they were VASTLY different, from flavor to texture. Food was rich, not too heavy, complex, even the martini I had was made exceptionally well!
We had bad timing in that we had a large group and placed our orders just as the kitchen was getting slammed. Though we had allowed ourselves two hours before a show down the street, things got tight and we barely made it in time. Our wait staff was wonderful in trying to make it all work out. The food was fabulous and we will definitely be back. We will just pay more attention next time and get our orders in earlier if we are with a large group.
Besaws is awesome. Great food, very nice service, comfortable and inviting space. It is a Portland classic and does not disappoint. Highly recommended.
A great experience as usual. We brought our own bottle of sparkling wine and enjoyed the evening to celebrate the move we just made to the neighborhood. Always a treat to dine at the new place!
Did the Portland dining month menu and while it’s fun to get 3 course meal and try new things, it doesn’t exactly feel $33 worth. Great environment and service as always!
Tasty food, but unfortunately understaffed and under prepared for the rush of PDM. Several orders forgotten/delayed. They did comp some of them, which was nice, but still disappointing.
Great service and food.
We enjoyed a very special Birthday dinner at Besaw's. Food was great and service was stellar. Can't wait to come back
Comfort food dressed up, new twists on old favorites like beef brisket and burgers, and an excellent cocktail and wine list to accompany. Service is always friendly, attentive but not overbearing. Always packed for breakfast and brunch but dinner is delightful. Nice place to catch up with friends.
Delicious French silk pie and the butterscotch pudding was a big hit.
The server & bartender accommodated a cocktail request. Thank you, but the entree was served cold and we waited to some length between courses. Unfortunately it was not a positive memorable dining experience.:(
Attentive staff, delicious food and the space is cozy and comforting.
We came for Portland dining month, it was OK, we weren't raving about the food or service. We had been once before for brunch and the food was good but a bit pricey for what we got. For dining month they had a 3 course dinner, my partner and I got one of everything. It was good, not amazing, nothing special... The service was slow, seemed understaffed and our waitress was waiting on like every table in the restaurant. Food was lukewarm or cold when it arrived at our table and we had a very long wait between courses (even though we ordered everything at the start). The drinks were not great either - the Buoy beer tasted like Rainier and the cider was something flavored, not tasty. All in all, very meh experience and we might be back but probably not.
We had a lovely brunch at Besaw's. There were many choices and all seven of us were happy. Eggs Benedict were the best of one of our group had ever had! Rosemary potatoes were excellent! Portion size was very large.
Great service, very accommodating, good ambience, and excellent food and drinks.
I have brunch here all the time and Besaws excels at brunch but I would not recommend it for dinner, it's like a different restaurant, food was not great, tiny portions no sides included with expensive maun courses and the service was the worst I've ever had at this restaurant
My friend had the special: pan seared duck breast. I had the pork shoulder slow cooked in milk with fennel. Both dishes were superb. Wait staff (Jenny) was above and beyond. Great space, great food, and a great night.
Great service, thanks for keeping the meatloaf on the menu!
Really late seating and late service on Valentine’s day. We had reservations set for 8 pm. We were seated at 8:35 pm. They told us service would be provided in 5 minutes. Waitress took our 20 minutes later. Food arrived at 9:15 pm. We ended up rushing through dinner and was late for our movie by 20 min.
Valentine's dinner at Besaw's was a let down. This was the first time I visited their new location. Unfortunately it was a disappointment this evening. I don't know if people called in sick and they were understaffed both in the kitchen and wait staff or what was happening. It could have been poor planning or diners were taking longer than expected. We were about 5 minutes late and had to wait about 10 minutes for our table. The 2 person table we were seated at was too close to the other tables. There was barely enough room for my husband to slide between tables to sit on the bench seat. When the waiter faced a table to take their order his backside was directly in the face of the neighboring table. Everyone could hear neighboring conversations which was uncomfortable at times and yet there were other times where I couldn't even hear my husband speaking due to noise level. Drinks were very tiny and it took probably 15 minutes from the time we ordered those till they arrived. Food took a full hour. We didn't order an appetizer. My husband asked what was going on & why it was taking so long. Waiter said they were doing the best they could. Manager gave us a salad due to delay, which we did appreciate. When the food got there it was very good. That was the saving grace of the night. Not sure if we will go back or not. Valentine's fail...
Terrible, terrible service. We waited 15 minutes to put our first order in. Waited another 15 minutes for our drinks. Then had to wait another 15 minutes to order food! We also had an entree that just never came, despite being told by the server that it was on the way. It was a laughably terrible experience, and we will not be returning.
Really nice booth, intimate place in a lively atmosphere. Good acoustics so we were able to have conversations. Waiter was excellent, knowledgeable. Something on the menu for everyone, great craft cocktails and wine choices. Also enjoyed the solo club next door before dinner.
Went for Valentine’s Day dinner and wondering if Besaw’s is under new (or no) management these days? Biggest offense was when we ordered 2 glasses of wine. After waiting 15 minutes, the couple that sat down after us and ordered two mixed drinks, after us, were served. Waiter completely ignored us as he delivered drinks and then proceeded to take their order. After I made a comment about the drinks snafu, it still took several more minutes to get the drinks. Remember, Two. Glasses. Of. Wine. Sheesh, that’s really my only criteria, food can suck (more on that later) and service after a drink can be slooooow, but if I have that first drink you can treat me like crap.
So on to food, actually not a whole lot to say. I ordered duck confit. Came out super salty and on the dry side. Was it duck jerky? Also red potatoes as a side but it seemed like there should have been some kind of sauce? Nope, just some cooked potatoes.
The one bright side, at least someone recognized the screw up because they cut our bill in half. So there is that. But I would have thought a manager might have stopped by to check on us??
So anyway, best of luck to future eaters!
Drinks were great. Main course (brisket) was so fatty and rich it was almost inedible. Super disappointed overall. Good for breakfast, maybe not dinner.
Server and kitchen messed up 3 of 6 orders and said it was because there were too many modifications. Server also forgot several things including coming to take our order and beverages we ordered. Service is never really stellar the last three visits.
Great experience as usual.
Food and drinks were excellent.
We had the pork shoulder which was tender and wonderful and then the shrimp and steak—also excellent.
Great food and service! Nice atmosphere. Suitable noise level so you could have a conversation without yelling at your dinner partners. Will come back!
Met with friends and had a wonderful time. We sat in the corner booth and it was perfect - pretty of privacy and the noise level was low. The food was great. Had a fun time.
We received a gift card, used it. The merlo and cab Wine were great, we ordered the special Wednesday eve, split it.
Beef was tough, stringy. The salad was very tasteful, recommended by the manager. The dessert was very good, the tawny port a real treat. The table service was great. Ambiance was a plus, quiet and warm, the door curtain a real plus!
The food and service were great, but the restaurant was really cold. They have curatins to close off the door, but they keep it open. It was hard to relax because it was so cold in the restaurant.
Love us some Besaw’s!!
I love that they upgraded their restaurant with the new location, and the fantastic dinner menu.
Everything was delicious, from the salad and empanada, to the duck confit and steak frites!
We had a VERY nice booth that fit five extremely comfortably. The service was attentive and thoughtful, yet not intrusive. The location was lively, contemporary, comfortable and an exciting place to be. Although the restaurant name ‘Besaw’s’ has been a Portland institution for many years, and that comes with built-in expectation from the locals, it’s refreshed and relaunched iteration does not disappoint. So long as you don’t go there looking for the exact same menu of 1995.
Went for Christmas Eve dinner. We were a group and, among all of us, we ended up getting each dish on the entree menu. None of them were fantastic. The $40 steak was nothing exceptional at all. The lasagna was really bland. The rockfish and pork were solidly decent. The service was a little slow. Dessert was pretty spectacular. Overall, it was just very ok for a lot of price. Will probably not go back for a holiday meal.
The Steak frites were delicious. The Rockfish was great. They didn't have a child's menu, but they made up a cheese pizza. I have had pizza in New York, Chicago, and other ports of call. This was the BEST pizza I have ever eaten. Even the 2 year old was upset when the waiter took it away to box it up. I'll be bringing a small child with me next time I eat here.
Food marginal at best though fresh squeezed juice and coffee good.
This was my first time at Besaw’s for dinner (brunch’d there before). I will start with the food was very good. My friend and I ordered a bottle of wine and each an entree - burger and rockfish.
Unfortunately the table we were seated at was basically underneath the coat rack. It was very weird and uncomfortable to have a table in that spot. And while our server was very nice and pleasant, she seemed to forget about us quite a few times. After we were seated nobody came to speak to us for at least 10 minutes and we didn’t get our food ordered until about 30 minutes after being seated. The restaurant was not overly crowded so unless they were short staffed I’m not sure why that happened.
Overall, experience was ok. I would go back again and give it another shot. After working in the service industry I understand everyone has an off night from time to time.
The service was fantastic and the food was perfect from drinks through dessert.
Went here for a Friday night date. Once we walked in, the ambiance felt a bit off. The server was nice and the food was good but extremely unfulfilling. We left still hungry and having to buy snacks at the grocery store. I think this place has a lot of potential but it felt like there is just something missing.
We had company from out of town and chose Besaw’s as a specie treat. Truly enjoyed everything
