Berret's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
When visiting Williamsburg,it is always a place to have lunch or dinner. The food is fresh and creative, the staff friendly and efficient. Many times after a day touring, we stop for a relaxing meal. I recommend reservations especially if the Colllege of William and Mary have scheluded events.
We were dining with friends while visiting Williamsburg. We wanted a nice comfortable dinner, somewhat more than average meal. My salmon was delicious. The rest of the table ordered a plate with several types of seafood. They all really liked the crab cake. The fried shrimp were in a small bowl on top of the fried oysters which made the breading soggy on the oysters. I would go again for the food but the waitress was not good. She seemed to be getting mixed signals from the bar regarding which beer was avaiable. we were told first they were out and the told they had the type we ordered. She seemed overwhelmed and frustrated with management which took a bit away from our evening.
Another excellent dining experience at Berret’s. The service was prompt and attentive, orders arrived quickly, and the portions were very generous. We sat in the main dining area but it would have also been a beautiful evening for the patio. We always try to make a stop here when visiting in the area.
We have been to Berret's for a meal nearly every time we have been to Williamsburg, proof of the high level of consistent excellence we normally experience. Tonight's meal was excellent. The calamari were lightly friend and tender, the house salad was fresh and the seafood trio special was excellent. Kudos to our wait staff, Ashly and her trainee Allie.
Though I do not live in Williamsburg whenever I visit , I always have lunch or dinner at Berret's. Over the years, my favorite treat was Berret's she crab soup. I raved about it to my friends so they would order it also. Three nights ago, my husband and I had dinner at Berret's. Again, I bragged on the soup. We all ordered it. Needless to say, it was horrible! I might have tasted one sliver of crab in the soup. It had no flavor. I swear I have tasted better she crab soup from a can! And this soup tasted as if came out of a very cheap brand of canned soup. However when we told the manager, he quickly took it off the bill.
PS... I also had to remind the waiter....where is the sherry for the soup?
Dinner was superb. She crab soup delicious. I had the red white and blue platter. Amble serving size- I took some home for lunch the next day. Nice place - great atmosphere. It was a little loud though. Our server was attentive. But when asked for a suggestion for dessert replied I don’t eat dessert. Perhaps it was her tone that took us back a bit. We settled for the Peach Bread pudding which was mediocre especially compared to the rest of the meal.
Consistently good seafood and service in a light and airy atmosphere. The Blue Plate lunch special is very good; portions appear small but the items are perfectly and somewhat richly prepared. You won't go hungry. For a long time now, Berret's has been one of the better dining options in Colonial Williamsburg.
We walked inside and received a friendly greeting. While going to our table we noticed there were no tablecloths and it almost looked like a diner. Don't let that fool you. The service was professional and efficient, as good as any so-called 5-star restaurant, and the presentation of the meal was the same. Certainly not over priced, but certainly a restaurant that deserves its high rating.
Waiter was attentive and very friendly. The Seafood in a Parchment was extremely good and we would order that again. The music outside after the meal was also entertaining. It was an enjoyable evening. The only negative was where we sat - by the wait staff counter and the door from the kitchen. A bit noisy, but not a negative on the overall experience.
Things you want in a great dining experience:
1. Friendly greeting at the door.
2. No waiting
3. Excellent service but not overly in your face
4. Creative selection of freshly prepared food w/ a knowledgeable wait staff
5. Low pressure chill atmosphere
Berret's had the entire package and this is coming from a heavy travel business professional who is in restaurants all the time.
We had been there for Mother's Day last year and when our anniversary came around this year, we decided to have it there. We knew that they had oysters so we had them as an appetizer. For the entree, we ordered the Red/White/Blue plate of seafood and the steak. Both were very good.
The only mistake we made was in ordering two appetizers, as this prevented us from finishing our meals.
Soup was great. Oysters Rockefeller was terrible. Asked twice for bread and butter. Had sparkling wine. Waiter not trained on how to open wine. Cork flew into adjoining party’s table. One entree fair. Other entree came out at room temperature at best. Caesar salad presented with a Parmesan crisp that was greasy due to it being under fried. Oyster’s Rockefeller had no taste due to the omission of Pernod and other essentials. It was our anniversary as well and nothing offered except to write me an apology note and send at a later date. Saw 2 mgt. but nothing more offered except to take off the oysters and entree.
We had a great anniversary dinner at Berret's. Contrary to another review I saw, they did see the comment on our reservation that it was our anniversary and our server was sure to wish us a happy one.
Service and food were both great - not just for us, but for the tables behind us. I heard multiple servers having good, friendly dialogued with their tables.
Sorry, folks, but this Merchant Square restaurant never fails to disappoint me. This was my third attempt there, and we only went there since we couldn’t get in anywhere else. It was a busy weekend. My friends and I were hesitant about what to pick from the menu since previous dishes have been lousy or mediocre. I picked a salmon dish with a crust that was fair. My friend ordered fish and chips thinking it was safe. Th fries were soft, not crisp. So he asked for another order of fries.
Although we asked Nick, our server, to replace the fries, we had to ask several more times. By the time they finally arrived, my friend had finished his fish. So we had to ask repeatedly for a container. Nick should have removed the fish and chips from the check for all those mistakes they made, but he didn’t. All foodies should avoid this place.
Ordered She Crab soup and kept biting into pieces of shell. Ordered the herb crusted Salmon with risotto and asparagus. Risotto was not warm at all, but salmon was hot. Wine and service from waiter was good. Having come from D.C. for a mother/daughter trip I was really disappointed with the food. Your place came highly recommended by Fife and Drum where we stayed. When they asked how it was I told them and they were very surprised by our first time experience not being as good as they thought it would be.
