Berret's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
On the menu was a "blue plate" special which includes a bowl of she-crab soup, a crab cake, flash fried oysters, fried shrimp, seafood imperial, redskin mashed potatoes, and asparagus.
The she-crab soup had great flavor and it was nice to have the waitress approach the table with a small bottle of sherry. She asked if I would like to pour some sherry in my she-crab soup. You can have as much or as little as you want for flavor. There was plenty of crab shredded into the soup, but I would like to have had some larger pieces of crab meat.
The main plate came out quickly and appeared appetizing. However I quickly became disappointed. The crab cake was lightly crusted on top, however it was slightly burnt on the bottom. Upon cutting into the crab cake, it was not completely done with a VERY creamy consistency inside the cake. Flavor was totally lacking.
The seafood imperial had a good flavor but I was really disappointed to find pieces of imitation crabmeat throughout the imperial. That too was not cooked entirely. The flash fried oysters and shrimp came in a small metal bowl with drain holes. The fried items were very greasy and dripped grease when I removed them from the metal bowl. Very unfortunate because the grease overcame the taste of the oysters.
The redskin mashed potatoes were okay for flavor but were not creamy. The asparagus was sautéed and had a good flavor. Overall I did not enjoy this meal.
I DO NOT recommend this restaurant because there are much better choices in Williamsburg.
Excellent meal and good value for money. It’s not cheap but I would have gladly paid more. We were seated right beside the fireplace, which was perfect for the cold wintery mix fallen today. We had the sampler appetizer and it was perfect for two. My wife had herb encrusted salmon with orzo and it was outstanding. I had the crab cakes with asparagus and bacon grits and they were awesome. The meal was so good we bought my parents a gift card for Christmas. We will definitely be back.
Oysters! Wow, this restaurant knows how to prepare them. We had the house salad which was mixed greens with cranberries and pepitas dresses with the house vinaigrette. Then we asked for the oyster appetizer x2 which was served with choice of side (at extra cost) so we had the creamy rice (rice mixed with cheese). The oysters were outstanding so we had oysters for dessert: crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. Service by Dan was very good. Loved their Christmas tree decorated with hanging oyster shells.
Wonderful mid week lunch starting with York River oysters...
The service was excellent!
Delicious food. In addition to the raw oysters, the crispy salmon cakes in tomato stew and grilled pound cake, chocolate sauce, and vanilla ice cream were exceptional.
Certainly worth returning to and recommending.
Met friends to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season. Everyone agreed the food and service was great. Highly recommend our server, Lillian. She was delightful and ensured we all felt relaxed and able to take our time enjoying the evening. Several of us had the Blue Plate Special, which was excellent and plentiful. Desserts were oversized and half of each went home in a take out box. The interior is divided into small rooms, which gives it an intimate feeling and keeps the noise level extremely low compared to other restaurants. Outdoors was highly decorated for the season with beautiful white lights in all the trees. Will be going back soon. Well worth the drive from Hampton to Williamsburg for this restaurant.
Our first foray at Berret's left us a bit underwhelmed but, to be fair, we are admittedly a somewhat "food snob" couple with high expectations. The major detractors to our experience were the noise, the food was actually lukewarm when served, and the sense that we were being 'rushed' so our table could be turned for the next customers. Please don't get me wrong - while Berret's is not necessarily suitable for us, it was clear that it is a popular restaurant with many besides us.
We enjoyed our evening at Berret's very much. We had made reservations which was good since they were booked for most of the evening. Our table was ready and the service was excellent. Our waiter, William, was friendly and offered recommendations . Our food, the seafood in a parchment and a shrimp dish, was delicious. The cobbler desert was outstanding. We enjoy eating at Berret's when we are able to visit Williamsburg.
We were happy to have a booth by a window which helped on the noise level. It is not a restaurant to go to if you have difficulty hearing. Food was good. It is very casual.
I had crab cakes and grits which were good. A little green on the plate would have been nice.
We've been there for Thanksgiving looking for a special place. The diner was nice, but nothing remarkable. I chosen seafood and was great with a Williamsburg chardonnay. With the thanksgiving diner there was a carrot cake included, a huge and delicious slice.
My husband and I enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving dinner at a cozy table for 2. The turkey plate was delish and because it was all you could eat servings my husband had a whole 2nd plate just like he used to do at his Mom’s - and then had pie too! Wonderful service and great food just blocks from Colonial Williamsburg. Just wonderful.
Pricey...I understand it’s Williamsburg and will have tourist pricing, but $30 for a not so generous portioned plate of turkey, mashed sweet potatoes, green beans and stuffing was ridiculous. Our hunger wasn’t close to satisfied. Our service was wonderful and the specialty drinks were excellent.
Thanksgiving eve, and all of the Colonial Williamsburg inns were booked. We found Barret’s thru Open Table as a nearby establishment with pretty good reviews. The food was hearty, tasty and worth the trip, but the selection of types of both seafood and land food was more limited than what we would expect from a primarily seafood restaurant. Still, a pleasant evening and certainly more economical than the inns who could not seat us.
We've been stopping at Berrets for many years on our various trips to Williamsburg, and enjoy it each time. The food is very good, the wait staff very friendly. Our only issue this trip was that the lighting was way too bright for the romantic dinner my husband and I always try to enjoy at Berrets. It felt like we were in any family restaurant in America instead of a lovely, quiet retreat while out of town.
Overall good. We were able to be seated upon arrival even though we were earlier than our reservation. I had an expectation that Barretts knew of the message on a birthday and anniversary celebration, however that wasn't the case. My husband had to ask about a birthday candle for our dessert and our anniversary went unknolowdeged.
Our server was great, attentive and friendly. I would have preferred a slower pace than to feel rushed to order, be served our app, quickly followed by dinner than dessert. Since we were celebrating 2 important dates and choose Barrets as the place to spend our time and money I would have like a little more attention. I think the notes I left for open table never made it to Barretts staff which leaves me disappointed.
