What Insiders Are Saying
Having dinner in Berners Tavern feels like eating inside the Sistine Chapel, or at least a really, really rich guy’s house.
Great service and food.
Ambience was also perfectly.
Wonderful for brunch.
Had a confirmed reservation for 8.30pm and was made to wait an hour for our table. Was only offered a complimentary drink for the inconvenience after asking for one. The table had clearly been given away and we kept being told it would only be a few minutes wait. Then got an email from OpenTable saying we hadn’t showed up for the booking! Very poor management by front of house, who let the restaurant down.
We have been coming here for a few years now and we still love it as much as we did the very first time - it’s our absolute favourite place for a special dinner out with visiting friends or family. It’s a beautiful and stunning room with the wow factor, and superb food and service to match.
Great experience. Good menu and quality food.
Service is just right ; friendly and professional.
The service here was so great with the staff being very helpful. I had the strawberry juice to start which was delicious and then the sweet potato, halloumni, poached egg and pesto breakfast dish which was probably the best breakfast I have ever had! Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely be returning and recommending to friends!
Absolutely loved this. Beautiful restaurant, the room took my breath away. Food was absolutely delicious, great wine list and loved the champagne cart. Felt very special. Fancy but without all that over the top fuss.
Great ambience matched by fabulous food, charming welcome, delightful service )very pleasant, helpful but unobtrusive). This was a forgotten gem -now remembered, so we will be back soon and we can’t wait. Altogether superb experience.
Lovely place, and very good food. The beef tartare and tomato soup were fantastic, but the rest of the meal was very good but not outstanding.
This is one of the best restaruants I have ever been to in terms of aesthetic. The service was really grate. However, the orange juice was fizzy, making it taste like a weird soft drink.
A classy establishment
Never had a bad meal here, always delightful and ample portions.
I understand the booking slots are for 2 hours only, BUT I find the approach unacceptable. To be told to leave when you pay £300 for two people is enough to ruin the whole experience. It's greedy and made me feel unwelcome
Great food in fabulous surroundings
We went to Berners for a colleagues leaving "do" . When booking, the restaurant informed us that as there were 9 of us we had to have a set menu and leave a credit card to secure the booking as their cancellation policy for a group was 72 hours. No problem - we did that - and turned up on the night. Unfortunately we were 2 down, one colleague was ill and the other had childcare issues - thats called life !
We arrived spent over £200 at the bar --- two bottles of Ruinart Champagne - £29.99 in the shops £102 at Berners - to be expected we thought and so we had no quibble with that
Dinner itself was rather disappointing - several of the group ordered rib eye steak - two of which had so much fat and gristle as to be almost inedible -- the steaks were left.
The real stunner however came when we were given the bill -- just over £1000 for 7 of us !! -- so we checked it and saw that we had been charged for 9 persons !. We raised this with the waiter who in turn got the Maitre D' who said - well you booked for 9 so we have charged you for 9 - if you want to change the number of your party then you have to give 72 hours notice. Seriously ! ? - I think that is possibly one of the most unreasonable things I have ever heard. I understand if we were a complete no show but we weren't and had spent alot of money there. To have this type of attitude and approach in a service based industry is complete arrogance - and shows a disrespect and disregard for its customers. Restaurants need customers - well I can assure you there are 9 customers who will never ever set foot inside Berners ever again and we will make sure to tell everyone we know just how money grabbing it is -- smacks of a failing business !!! well - keep treating customers this way and you'll get there quicker than you think.
Food was ok but nothing to write home about. We ordered the chateaubriand for 2 and chips. The steak was a bit overdone and barely warm. The chips seemed over cooked as well. There are some interesting drinks on the menu which are worth trying though. The atmosphere is a bit stuffy for a “tavern”. The reception by the hostess was cold and uninterested. Some of the workers seemed very uptight as well. We were celebrating our anniversary which I mentioned in our reservation which was never acknowledged by any of the staff.
Food is extremely good and setting is lovely. Staff are friendly.
incredible place, great service and good english food
Nice up market restaurant with great wine list and decent, if not exciting, food. Service was amover-attentive for us - we felt a bit invaded with constant wine top-ups and questions about how the service was from several members of staff one after the other.
Food was good and in general, experience was fine. Few cons: Lots of different waiters/servers at our 2 person table (think my final count was 6). Service felt rushed and very little time between starters and main entree. The space is expansive, and this trends towards a very loud environment.
While I don’t regret going, it wouldn’t be a place I’d recommend as a “must do” to family and friends.
No tablecloths, but good food and service. Why does this have to have 50characters?
Very elegant, stylish restaurant with excellent service : friendly, professional and not overbearing. The food was fine, but nothing we will look back on as being particularly special
The Dover Sole was really good as were the side dishes of crushed potatoes with lots of butter and the fresh english peas with sugar snaps. Creme brûlée with rubarb ice cream was delicious. Great recommendation by the Sommelier. Will go back soon...
Wonderful quality food and they somehow manage to make a vast room into a fairly intimate dining experience. It was the best beef tartare I'd ever tasted, and the cod dish was cooked perfectly and had an amazing flavour. I'll definitely be coming back to try other items on the menu.
Wonderful food and brilliant cocktails in a really beautiful environment. The service were good and the staff where very polite, but were often a bit slow. We would definately go again and would recommend to a friend.
The restaurant is in a lovely listed building with high ceilings and very airy. The ambience is very much brasserie in a big cosmopolitan city. The hustle and bustle of the restaurant gives it a very cool atmosphere.
The food is amazing and service is punctual and very friendly, I will definitely return to this restaurant.
+ Amazing atmosphere, tasty "Beetroot Cured Loch Duart Salmon", "Watercress Soup" and risotto
- High sofa
With a fantastic service
And a decent price for the package
Berners Tavern is a good restaurant in a spectacular setting. Occupying a huge room inside the Edition Hotel, one is surrounded by pictures of all sorts, in every inch of wall, as if at The Hermitage. The menu is at times a bit much, but the eating is generally very good.
Hostess was impolite and completely incompetent. Arrived and she said I had no reservation but seated me anyway. Friend was meeting me turned out she seated them prior and then erased reso and when I arrived. Seated us at 2 different tables and after waiting 10 minutes and receiving a “seated confirmation” from Open Table (thank you!) I figured out the mistake they made. They were barely apologetic and manager did nothing to assuage the situation. Will never return.
The Berners Tavern is a fantastic venue with a great interior, most notably the wonderful ceiling. The service was great, attentive and friendly. Our dishes were well executed and my fish was cooked perfectly. Pudding was beautiful and the mint ice-cream was deliciously minty.
Overall a great night out.
The sommelier that served us was a delight. He made the evening that much more enjoyable. Unfortunately we didn’t catch a name but he was young and fun, and very engaging. He knew everything to know about wine. The 2 vegetarian options on the menu served it justice, the risotto was to die for. I would definitely come again.
We arrived 10 minutes early for our 1pm booking. I explained to the reception that I had a voucher but had forgotten to print it out. We were told that was no problem just bring it to the attention of the waiter with the bill as they would want the voucher number. We were then told to take a seat whilst the table was prepared. We then had a succession of waiters asking to get us drinks but none could answer how long it would be before our table would be ready. Eventually we were shown to our table at 1.30pm!
Once seated at the table the waiters and sommelier were very attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent and I was even tempted to have a dessert something I don't normally do and didn't regret it.
When it came to settling the bill I produced the voucher on my phone and was told we should have printed it out. I explained the earlier conversation and was told they would get the manager. After a while the manager came and was clearly not happy and took my phone to go and get the voucher printed which seemed very unnecessary. So paying the bill also became a chore and took about 15 minutes.
The day we attended was Fathers Day and it was a nice touch to receive a hip flask with a cocktail.
I was then surprised when I received an email from Open Table saying that I hadn't attended our reservation and making us out to be inconsiderate. When this was checked I was then asked to complete the review for my booking at 1.30pm. I have confirmation we were booked for 1pm so this seems an attempt to cover the delay!
So in summary the food was excellent, the staff attentive but administratively there is room for improvement.
Went for my girlfriends birthday and had an amazing time! Food was delicious, service was friendly & timely and the dining area was decadent!
The service was fantastic and as it was our daughters 18th Birthday they really made her feel special with a lovely little chocolate delight!!
I do feel the starters are overpriced and I would avoid these in future
Wonderful food and ambience
Amazing experience. Best meal in London.
Spacious, pleasant, convenient, not very noisy at all.
Nice place for dining and the staff are very accomodating
A fantastic restaurant, with excellent service and brilliant food. No pressure in terms of finishing meal and a lovely touch when an anniversary cake was given to us!
great food and ambience, service was slow and we were served by different waiters the whole time.
