Bernard's Ratings and Reviews
excellent food... funny service... while spliting 1/2 dozen oysters we each had one.. then the staff came and tried to take away the dish... we clearly hadn't been finished. another point in the evening I ordered a cocktail, and my girlfriend ordered a glass of wine.. as the drinks were being served we had been shown a bottle of pinot noir by another waiter.. we obviously just got drinks and didn't order the bottle. a complimentary glass of ice wine to wrap up the dinner was nice, but something just seemed off with the service side of the meal.
Another excellent New Years dinner. The fixed menu was terrific with choices for appetizers and entree. The roast hen and the Beef Wellington were both tops. The service was top notch for such a busy evening and the food was all delivered hot and timely. Recommended wine list was varied or you could order off the main list. The Inn was decorated beautifully for the Holidays.
if you are looking for a special place to celebrate anything , this is it. You cannot find such a varied and unique menu, from appetizers to entres to desserts, anywhere. Ambiance and service are top notch. The wine list is extensive and cocktails are generous and expertly prepared
Bernard's is a restaurant that never disappoints in the food it provides. It is consistently excellent. It is always tasteful and beautifully arranged on the plate. The service is most often exceptional.
Every diner is made to feel welcome and special.
It, along with X2O in Yonkers are my two favorite restaurants outside of NYC in the Westchester/Fairfield area. Both provide terrific food at somewhat expensive but not unreasonably expensive prices.
We went on Christmas Day. While the food was exquisite, the menu was limited. The service was professional yet personal. Very well-trained staff. The five of us included a 3-year-old. They staff made every overture to keep her satisfied. Being the ONLY restaurant (other than the Chinese places) open on Christmas, they did great business -- which they deserved!
Brought the family here for Christmas Day dinner and really enjoyed it. There was a variety of choices, that everyone in the family liked, even a kids menu that made my 5 year old happy. It was extremely busy but the service was attentive and helpful and the food was very good. We would definitely go back especially for a special occassion.
This is the third year in a row that we have taken our family to Bernard's for Christmas Dinner and the experience was excellent. The menu selections were outstanding....6 choices for starters, 4 entrees and a 3 selection sampler of sorbet, yule log and creme brule for dessert. We each chose different starters and entrees so had a wide sampling from the menu....broad smiles all around signaling high satisfaction with their selections. Their wine selections by bottle and glass are moderately priced and of high quality.
Service was excellent and our food was served at a leisurely pace. Live piano music with all the seasonal favorites provided a wonderful ambiance for all to enjoy.
Have been going here for years and have never had a less thA wonderful dining experience. Bernard's kitchen turns out excellent food that is anything but run of the mill....each meal offers a surprise taste that adds that little bit of extra to an already wonderful meal! Staff is very helpful and provide honest opinions when asked for suggestions. Bernard's wife, Sarah always has a friendly smile and a bit of friendly conversation. A true gem, Sarah's Wne Bar is perfect when you want a little more casual dining experience.
Table of 6 for Christmas Eve with advance reservations. They squeezed us at a small table & waitstaff was NOT warm or welcoming. Only 2 of 6 entrees were good. Beef Wellington was awful; not cooked the way anyone asked for it & it was smothered in a mysterious salty sauce. Staff was untrained & uncoordinated & no clue what they were serving. Can't believe a restaurant of this reputation could offer such a poor meal!
Bernard's is a nice restaurant but it's not as good as it thinks it is. The food is good but not spectacular. The service staff is pretty awful, not intentionally, but simply not well enough trained for the level the establishment is trying to pull off. On the plus side the wine list is really excellent and priced very attractively and the atmosphere is good.
We all had a wonderful time and the food was fantastic. Music in restaurant, to my mind, should be no more than background. I personally cannot stand music being played right next to me while I am trying to visit with old friends, but they seemed to enjoy the pianist who was good at what he does. If I return I would request a table as far from the piano as possible. (As a side note, I should have asked because I took elderly friends/relatives to Sarah's this summer and it was much worse on the noise level... completely inappropriate jazz horn player which was deafening and very, very unpleasant).
Ok it was our first Thanksgiving dining out experience. OK we missed our kids. Ok we are accustomed to 4-6 days of left-overs. Ok we have family recipes. That being said, I still say just ok. Understanding it wasn't the normal gorging, the portions were small for $65. Our leftovers consisted of 5 mini cookies; a normal meal for my wife and I out usually results in lunch the next day, including other meals we have had at Sarah's Wine Bar aka Bernard's.
Other than that the food was tasty, a bit too salty. I had beef and M had turkey, both were well prepared and sophisticated, just not enough. The deserts were also fun but the time to prepare for those deserts could have been Thanksgiving standards, we would have been happier.
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at this upscale restaurant last week. We have been here several times and always have a wonderful meal. The staff is very knowledgeable. The owners take great pride in their business.
I had the halibut and my husband enjoyed the duck entree. The portions were very generous.
We went to Bernard's for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. My wife attended CIA, and is very knowledgeable about food. She was quite impressed with the food we received, so we plan to be back soon. Only complain we have is amount of time we had to wait to order the food. Overall, we highly recommend Bernard's for their excellent food.
Expensive, but worth every dollar. I always love restaurants where the owner stops by the table to ask how the meal is. We had a very nice conversation. This place is a real gem. I agree with the reviews that the 'house' atmosphere is a little dated, but who cares? when the food is this good.
We always enjoy a leisurely brunch at Bernard's. The fixed price menu is an interesting choice of freshly prepared dishes, and is MUCH more than omelets. Notably, I enjoyed the pumpkin souffle served in a delightful mini-pumpkin and the salmon roulade with pollenta. What we like almost as well as the food is the attentive service and the classic ambience topped with gentle jazz piano on a Sunday afternoon.
Six us for Sunday brunch. All but the writer was happy with all. I loved the lobster bisque, but found the turkey pot pie to be flat - chunks of turkey, bits of carrot, and chunks of potatoe - with no real flavor in any of them. The crust was soggy not flaky. While the dish is ordinary "comfort" type food, the only reason to order it in a fine dining restaurant is to see what a top notch chef will do with it to justify it being on the menu. Nothing is what I found to be the answer to the question. We six are regular customers who have enjoyed many, many dinners and also Sunday brunch - 2 couples from NY - Manhatten & Long Island - and my wife and I from West Hartford. We meet regularly at Bernards.
Excellent food and attentive service. Bernard's theme is modern French cooking. Not stuffy or heavy cuisine.
Many ingredients are locally sourced, some from the restaurant's own garden.
Located smack in the middle of historic Ridgefield CT, which makes for an excellent after-dinner walking opportunity.
T service was extremely attentive and the food was quite possibly the best I have ever had the chance off eating. The location ambience that the location of the restaurant is in is also beneficial. It was greatly appreciated that the consideration was taken to acknowledge one of the party member's birthday.
Our experience was outstanding, last june I organize the luncheon for the Frech Alliance of Greenwich and it was superb.I will
contact you again because I am going to organize an another luncheon.
Le service est excellent et la nourriture est raffinee ce qui est rare .
We traveled from our home in the Hudson Valley to Bernard's in Ridgefield - first time there and will be back! Setting was lovely - we saw one of the kitchen staff in the herb garden piking fresh herbs on our arrival.
Dining room was lovely, fresh flowers on each table. Live piano was a fabulous addition!
Wait staff was attentive. Food was delicious, fresh, creative and gorgeous. Wine list was extensive. Owner stopped to chat and made us feel welcome!
Flawless French cooking with a light hand, but the atmosphere was deadly -- decor reminiscent of a hotel conference room, crowd bordering on elderly, tinkling piano in the background. But the food and wine made up for it. Sarah's Wine Bar upstairs has a much more relaxed atmosphere, though the same deadly decor. I assume the food is as good there, coming from the same kitchen, so maybe we'll go there next time.
Sarah is always a gracious hostess, making the customer feel part of her "family" while ensuring that their dining experience is a remarkable one ... we do not normally sit outside on their outdoor patio, but the evening was so perfect, the serene setting so enjoyable, that we relaxed and savored the wonderful food and great wine while peering out on their lovely gardens . Bernards is always our favorite way to treat ourselves.
This restaurant was very good. The food could not have been better for all four of us. Every dish was excellent and presented beautifully. The waitstaff was a little too stuffy and not as friendly as they could have been. The restaurant itself was lovely and comfortable.
