This is the 3rd time we've been to Bernard's since it opened. We went for Mother's Day years ago when it first opened. Was there last Spring for an evening performance & dinner. It was good-we just ordered burgers & salads - a light meal. Decided to try it for Mother's Day. I thought the price fixe was $55/person when I made the reservations. That was the price for the brunch from 11-12:30 only (similar menu with more egg dishes). The dinner after 1:30 jumped up to $90/person! I didn't realize it til I looked at the menu before we left our house that morning. Drinks, tax & 20% gratuity (included) was extra. The restaurant was not full & we were placed in the back room, next to the kitchen. Service was slow. Food was ok. The amuse bouche (starter) was bland. The 3 of us ordered different things to try. The tuna tartar was good, lobster fricasse was good, ramp soup-ok. The entrees were good-Beef Wellington, chicken (nice crispy skin) & pork chop. We ended up bringing some of our entrees home as leftovers. Dessert trio (strawberry themed ?) was unremarkable.
We travel during holidays sometimes & I find, in general, that going out to restaurants for a holiday or special day like Mother's Day very disappointing these days.
Outstanding experience!!!!! Handicap friendly and helpful; absolutely delicious food; authentic French cuisine; three of four smallish rooms with live pianist. It was a truly great experience. It was expensive, but absolutely worth it.
This is only the second time in my life I have had the only occupied table in a restaurant. The other was fifty years ago, in Nikko, Japan in the off-season. This was a Sunday night in Ridgefield after a late afternoon music performance at Caramoor. The chef/owner wasn't in residence (why would he be?) and I felt the food's preparation was a notch below what it was the prior time, on a Saturday night. It was still excellent, but I think I'd prefer someplace with more people around. Very good wine from my region of France, the Haute Savoie, which should tell you that one of the attractions of this place is the carte des vins. Well-priced as well.
All time favorite that never disappoints! The menu always features creative choices of local and seasonal offerings. The staff is consistently kind and helpful and we always leave feeling very good about our experience. The wine list is exceptional and well priced.
AMBIENCE WAS NICE FOOD JUST OK. NOT REALLY IMPRESSED WITH SERVICE.
WAITER NEEDED MORE TRAINING TO DETAILS AND SPECIFICS ON MENU.
AT THE PRICES THEY ARE CHARGING LET'S GET THE SPARK NEEDED TO REV THINGS UP A BIT.
THIS SEEMS TO BE A REGULARS MEETING SPOT FROM LONG AGO. FOR A SATURDAY DINNER IN MY OPINION THE PLACE WAS EMPTY. HATE LEAVING SO-SO REVIEWS BUT IT'S JUST CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM!!
Dining was excellent however restaurant allowed a child to play the dining room piano which was loud and distracting. This should not be permitted in a fine restaurant.
A pleasant surprise. Comparable to NYC restaurants. Expensive- but worth it. Interesting food combinations and very good food. Will go again.
Easter at Bernard's was a wonderful experience! The food, ambiance and service are truly outstanding....and if you knew me you'd know I'm a very tough marker. Interesting wines, lovely live piano music at dinner kind attention to our 3 year old granddaughter. We've been before for special occasions and will certainly come again! It is quite expensive....even for the exceptional experience if provides.
Amazing food and very gracious service on a busy Easter dinner. The Old Fashioned was well mde. The piano player is superb!
First time here for first time and was disappointed. Had heard great things and was looking forward to it. Waited years to come. Easter Brunch was uninspired. No surprises on menu. Food was good. Ambiance was depressed and low energy. Decor was tired old New England inn. Service was poor in that waiters dropped silverware right and left. Children’s menu advertised ice cream sundaes but they served same dessert as on regular menu and disappointed. Not worth complaining about. We had had enough. Just not the special meal I had been long anticipating.
Bernard's serves consistently good good. The service is wonderful. My husband enjoyed veal and I had a delicious salmon meal.
Must have passed Bernard's fifty times going to/from the Ridgefield Playhouse, but never at a time that seemed good for dinner. Finally decided to try it because we had both afternoon and evening performances and thus had to eat someplace. Wow and double Wow! Extraordinary food, both classically French and still inventive. Utterly delicious. Everything perfect. What a surprise to find top shelf wines hardly marked up at all from retail. Going back in two weeks! And since the road there is a major thoroughfare, it's worth going just to go and eat, even though it's over twenty miles away.
Everything was great, as usual.
Near the end of dinner the electricity went out, but rather than panic, the staff brought out dozens of candles, the piano kept playing, and the kitchen kept cooking, by the light of lanterns and emergency lighting.
It was quite a memorable night!
There is no better place in Connecticut! Bernard's is always great, the food, wine list, service and ambiance
Don’t order the Tomahawk, chicken or the tomato soup. What a disappointment. Tomahawk was all fat, chicken entree disgusting and the tomato soup was pizza sauce from a jar garnished with basil. Our waiter tells us that several entrées are sold by 8:00. We were a party of 8. I was so embarrassed to have recommended this restaurant. The upstairs cafe is cheap and fun if you enjoy eating in an attic!
Go to Gallo around the corner for a good meal in Ridgefield or Planet Pizza.
We are serious foodies and this was one of the best meals we have had anywhere.
We will be back!
I wasn’t a total fan of having a piano player in the dining room but got used to it. We were one of two tables on a Friday night although there was a wine dinner having a very good time in the next room.
Excellent as always
Everything was as delicious as it was visually appealing w/good-sized portions. The staff is very friendly & attentive.
food was good --poor appetizer selections and a bit pricey
A fabulous lunch. Beyond expectations! Food over the top! Service so wonderful! A beautiful relaxed environment with truly fabulous food.
The food was fantastic and the service just added to the experience. The only bad thing was that the menu had to many delicious dishes and it made it hard for me to decide. Of course that's not really a bad thing but it'll make me come back to try some of the other delicious options on the menu I didn't get a chance to try this time around.
I'm looking forward to returning again.
Great and reasonable wine list. Professional service. Very good food. Dining room a bit dated.
The food at Bernard's never disappoints and it's the best food in the area if you care about sophisticated, tasty, seasonal food. It's definitely a bit pricey and that's why we mostly go for special occasions. Sarah's Wine Bar (upstairs) is more reasonable and the food is still good.
Loved it!!! Live piano music was a treat. Food was great. Service was great. Wine list extensive and wait staff was knowledgeable and directed us wisely. Can’t think of a single criticism. Can’t wait to go back.
Servers covered all my special requests.
Really enjoyed it!
We eat at Sara’s wine bar all the time which is always very good but when we eat at Bernards we always leave saying this is an excellent restaurant & one of the nest in the area. Food, service & desserts excellent
one of the best restaurants in Ridgefield and all of Fairfield County. Great service, wonderful menu and food. wine list is great with many choices in different price ranges. desserts are fantastic.
Ambiance is beautiful, food was excellent as well as the wait staff. We are new to Ridgefield and Sarah the owner was very hospitable and personally greeted us. Can’t wait to return!
A very elegant ambiance with excellent service and cuisine
Brunch was reasonable and delicious. Was catching up with old friends and we enjoyed the atmosphere and light piano background we were able to enjoy each other
Even allowing for the fact that it was New Years Eve the service was pathetic for a restaurant of this caliber. Really only one server who knows what he’s doing (and unfortunately he wasn’t serving us). It’s. a shame because the poor service completely undermines the delicious food coming out of the kitchen. Also think that $175 not including alcohol for the prix fixe dinner was a bit steep considering the food and the overall experience.
Way overpriced for did portions and mediocre service
Wonderful meal! Amazing wine list........creative French specialties........sweetbreads, brie & blk truffles, etc! Loved it all!
Wish I had thought to ask for the prices on the specials. My salad was $22 for an appetizer!!! The entree version was $18...when I questioned it they said that different scallops were used but honestly I would've ordered the entree size instead. Otherwise it was a nice meal, the food was fresh and good, the service was pretty good. Bernard's is a very nice overall experience.
We found the Beef Wellington to be drowning in gravy. Too much sauce on the pumpkin ravioli as well.
The food was very heavy and not five star as we expected. The owners are lovely but we felt it was overpriced.
My family and I went to Bernard's for Christmas Eve brunch. I had made the reservation 6 days prior to December 24. When I called to make the reservation, I did ask the cost of the brunch. I was told that the menu was not yet available, but that typically brunch ran about $39.00 per person. I felt that that was okay so I proceeded to make the reservation. It was noted that if I cancelled anytime after the 22nd, I would be charged $20.00 per person and we were five people so I did not want to cancel. In any event, we arrived on the 24th only to discover that the cost of the brunch was $95.00 per person. I just about fell off of my chair! It was 2.5X what the person on the phone had mentioned. Perhaps we should have left, but I felt embarrassed and we chose to stay. We did have a delicious meal, but when dessert arrived, we were never asked if we cared for coffee or tea or cappuccino, etc. We had to find someone to ask for that. As well, the waitress began clearing the dessert dishes well before I was finished with eating mine. I feel that a restaurant of this caliber should have better service and should be more up front with the cost of their holiday menus!
Food was creative and delicious, piano player was soft and melodious, wait staff ample and courteous. All good.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, the background piano music and overall relaxed, genteel atmosphere. Our evening was exceptional - a special occasion at a very special restaurant.
We met friends at the upstairs bar and found several other couples enjoying their very creative cocktails. Our bartender was extremely friendly as were the guests in the bar area. We then went downstairs for dinner and each of us ordered something different. The venison was delicious (the best my friend's husband has ever had). We had two fish dishes and a beef dish--all were excellent. We loved the brussel sprouts that were served with the fish dishes. We also had two salads--split them and was plenty for the four of us. Don't forget to meet the owners--great story about their family and their business venture!!
