Bernard's Ratings and Reviews
Even allowing for the fact that it was New Years Eve the service was pathetic for a restaurant of this caliber. Really only one server who knows what he’s doing (and unfortunately he wasn’t serving us). It’s. a shame because the poor service completely undermines the delicious food coming out of the kitchen. Also think that $175 not including alcohol for the prix fixe dinner was a bit steep considering the food and the overall experience.
Wish I had thought to ask for the prices on the specials. My salad was $22 for an appetizer!!! The entree version was $18...when I questioned it they said that different scallops were used but honestly I would've ordered the entree size instead. Otherwise it was a nice meal, the food was fresh and good, the service was pretty good. Bernard's is a very nice overall experience.
My family and I went to Bernard's for Christmas Eve brunch. I had made the reservation 6 days prior to December 24. When I called to make the reservation, I did ask the cost of the brunch. I was told that the menu was not yet available, but that typically brunch ran about $39.00 per person. I felt that that was okay so I proceeded to make the reservation. It was noted that if I cancelled anytime after the 22nd, I would be charged $20.00 per person and we were five people so I did not want to cancel. In any event, we arrived on the 24th only to discover that the cost of the brunch was $95.00 per person. I just about fell off of my chair! It was 2.5X what the person on the phone had mentioned. Perhaps we should have left, but I felt embarrassed and we chose to stay. We did have a delicious meal, but when dessert arrived, we were never asked if we cared for coffee or tea or cappuccino, etc. We had to find someone to ask for that. As well, the waitress began clearing the dessert dishes well before I was finished with eating mine. I feel that a restaurant of this caliber should have better service and should be more up front with the cost of their holiday menus!
We met friends at the upstairs bar and found several other couples enjoying their very creative cocktails. Our bartender was extremely friendly as were the guests in the bar area. We then went downstairs for dinner and each of us ordered something different. The venison was delicious (the best my friend's husband has ever had). We had two fish dishes and a beef dish--all were excellent. We loved the brussel sprouts that were served with the fish dishes. We also had two salads--split them and was plenty for the four of us. Don't forget to meet the owners--great story about their family and their business venture!!
Always a delightful experience - Wine and food, service and ambiance are all wonderful. I especially enjoy the piano player in the main dining room. Also, tables are not crowded together and your table conversation is private. A bit pricy but worth the cost.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at Bernard's. It was our first meal there and everything was delicious. We went there with little information other than online reviews and we were not disappointed. It was not an inexpensive meal, but thoroughly enjoyable. The service was excellent and the meal not rushed.
Very nice dinner. A bit pretentious with the parking and coat check. I’m not in favor of the mandatory 20% tip....Owner spent much time talking to one table, but did not interact with the other 4 tables. Would have been a classy move to ask all the diners if they were pleased and enjoyed their food.....
For years I have rated Chez Bernard as the best suburban restaurant in the region. We went for the Brunch service, at noon. Fresh flowers, soft live piano music in the background, wonderful choices of French cuisine including terrine, salmon, creme brulee, elegant service.
Although Bernard is a little far from Manhattan (about 1 1/2 hr going and closed to 2 hr for the return) we would recommend to try this restaurant. We have been there a few times and are yet to be disappointed. We like the ambiance, the relaxing decor, etc. Food served is good to very good, selection for lunches and brunches are varied; products used are fresh and prepared with care; small croissants served with the breads selection are very good. Personnel well trained and attentive. Wine list by the bottles, although huge, offers a few bottles at reasonable prices, which is not that always the case in most upscale restaurants in the Tri-State area. Bravo to the Chef and his wife Sarah.
Attentive and knowledgeable service. Provided the table requested on the Saturday night of a holiday weekend. Very classy. Live piano music great touch. Quality food creative menu. Lovely outdoor decorations for the season. Chef sent over drinks and special birthday dessert. Co-owner Sarah paid us a visit. Would definitely return.
Haven't dined at Bernard's in sometime and sadly, it has lost it's luster. Granted, it was a Tuesday evening, not busy, but still , it was a special occasion and we were all underwhelmed. Food was just not the quality I was hoping for. The striped bass was rubbery, dry and flavor- free, and was not anything like striped bass that I'd seen before. Under cooked Brussel sprouts, and an OK risotto were the sides. Wouldn't go back.
